Here’s A Possible Team For Tomorrow With Five Changes

8:59 am, Friday, September 16th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 86 Comments

It’s a very good question as to what the team will be for tomorrow’s home game against Wolves, but Rafa is likely to make several changes from the side that did  so well at Loftus Road.

We do have another game coming up on Tuesday night against Wolves, again at home in the 3rd round of the EFL Cup, so he will be making changes for tomorrow’s game.

daryl-murphy-trainimng

Daryl Murphy – could make debut tomorrow

And Rafa will want to win that EFL cup game and have a good run in both the local cups this season.

None of this nonsense about prioritizing the league over the cups with Rafa Benitez in charge of football matters at Newcastle.

Here’s a possible team for tomorrow which show five changes in personnel from Tuesday night at QPR.

Sels
Anita Mbemba Lascelles (c) Clark
Shelvey Colback
Atsu Diame Richie
Murphy

Rafa will presumably want to ensure that Daryl Murphy and Achraf Lazaar make their debuts tomorrow, so we would expect Achraf to be on the bench and be brought on in the second half at some point.

Lazaar could even start in place of Clark at left-back in the above side, but maybe that’s too many changes from Tuesday night?

We’ll hear from Rafa at his press conference early this afternoon and he may be just a little bit concerned by overconfidence and complacency for this game, following the rout in London.

What would your team be for tomorrow’s game, knowing that Rafa will be rotating the squad?

Murphy will likely make his full debut in the cup midweek. Gayle and Diame will start I think.

Hail – I agree. Murphy might get a sub appearance at best. I see perez playing as well

  • 11 expatmag // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:17 AM

Thw sign of a very good ream is that the goals are being shared around and we are not reliant on a Remy or a Shearer or some kind of centre forward who accounrs for 60 to 70 per cent of our goals.

I qonder when the last time was we had three central defenders on the scoresheet after 7 games of the season……or for that natter…..when was the last time we kept 6 clean sheets in a row.

it seems a harsh to drop any1 from the last match
it will happen but it seems a little harsh

  • 20 The overrated Frenchman // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:32 AM

I agree with jimmysmith that Perez and Mitrovic are the two real quality players amongst our strikers. Gayle has done well, and Murphy is obviously successful at this level, but neither has the same potential upside. Ultimately it’s performance at the level at which you are playing that counts of course, but Ayoze and Mitro have CL-type-player ability if they can harness it. (Shelvey and Ritchie in that category for me as well)

  • 21 WWSBRD // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:34 AM

    beer
Very harsh I agree but equally its harsh not to start Gayle, Diame and Atsu even Clark and Hanley have done nothing wrong

Its good to finally have to be harsh on players

  • 22 Jail for Ashley // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:35 AM

    ToF,
Just because two strikers may be better than the other two, which of course can be a matter of opinion it doesn’t take away the fact that there is healthy competition for places.

it is harsh in a good way I think mitro and perez will play and be dropped in the cup when diame and gayle will come back in

atsu will get his start in the cup I reckon Yedlin is in line for sat it will depend on the fitness of Ritchie

goofy came off at 60 mins at qpr was it a knock or just to give atsu game time

  • 26 jimmysmith // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:44 AM

Gayle has the guile of Perez. Murphy has the quality of Mitro. I really doubt it.

I’m alway’s right. Except when I’m wrong, but I’m right.

U might be right but tbf its very hard to guess under Rafa because he takes training and condition into account something we arent able to see

Yes, Yedlin might well start. We shall see, though!

  • 29 WWSBRD // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:49 AM

Neither Perez nor Mitro have done much to prove they are up to much tbf both were terrible last year

  • 30 jimmysmith // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:50 AM

Murphy is an able deputy to Mitrovic. Gayle will fall behind Perez and Mitrovic. That’s what I’m suggesting.

  • 31 Jail for Ashley // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:51 AM

    Jimmysmith,
Gayle has four in five starts, how is there not competition, if Perez has an off game or looks jaded Gayle can come in and vise versa, or he may not play either of them and go with Mitro or Murphy up top on their own, what is your definition of competition for places Jimmy.

  • 32 Ian Toon // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:53 AM

Sometimes the most negative response comment(s) tell you just as much about what you’re doing right as what you’re doing wrong. If a fellow blogger hates your style or your opinions there are always those that don’t . Equally they simply dismiss the criticism because of the contribution made by your critic. ” Keep on keepin’ on,” as the song goes.

Speaking personally I prefer the blog not to dumb down but be full of rich and varied comment which provides for different interpretation and opportunities for discussion. Certainly not puerile lists and the same historic comments endlessly expressed; different views and perspectives, even if we don’t always agree with them.

  • 33 hibbit // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:53 AM

got more chance of winning the lottery than second guessing Rafa
not even sure his coaches know who’s going on that team sheet

  • 34 jimmysmith // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:54 AM

There is competition. I was just messing about Jail, to make the point that Perez and Mitro are real quality.

  • 35 The overrated Frenchman // Sep 16, 2016 at 9:59 AM

Jail I didn’t mean that there isn’t genuine competition for a starting place. I accept that there is and would expect all four to be given plenty of opportunities.
WWSBRD – if you asked a manager of a Champions League team to take two of our strikers who do you think would be picked?

  • 37 Ian Toon // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:02 AM

I stand by —-Early days to make that claim. They have of course played together whereas other combinations haven’t. Good to have so many options.
The combination of Mitrovic and Pérez both scored in a 2-1 victory against Spurs. Excellent blend but Gayle equally could play with either Murphy or Mitrovic.

  • 38 Budge123 // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:03 AM

Mitro has potential -has a lot to prove for me.

Would like to see him in a front 2 with this quality of midfield behind him.

Hope that this season is the making of him

Perez and Mitro but if u asked a CL manager to take two striker from Wolves he’d still have to pick two players

Both have potential but thats it

  • 41 jimmysmith // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:05 AM

Been enjoying the local drop a little more than you perhaps should this arvy Expat.

Arghhhhh, can’t hold it against ya mate. It’s good stuff.

  • 42 jimmysmith // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:10 AM

Armstrong has potential. Mitro and Perez have potential and achievement. Too good for this division. I’m not sure we all realise what we have here.

  • 43 Ian Toon // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:13 AM

Well Spurs were interested in buying Pérez in January following his performance against them in December. It was probably his best game of last season.
Pardew rarely played Gayle with anyone else up front and Palace. Fans were constantly saying he should.
Gayle has pace and Perez guile I would favour either with either Murphy or Mitrovic. Plenty of options and its early season.

  • 44 Jail for Ashley // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:15 AM

Sorry Ian my apologies, terrible mix up there. Just that the post @32 was written in exactly the same condescending style and manner as a poster called carl.

Jail – Keep on keeping on- when is it you’re away?

  • 46 Budge123 // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:19 AM

Mitro ‘ s goal return is far to low.
But he is young and has potential – hasn’t achieved yet in my eyes.

He also has a very debatable temperament which if he can’t control will lead to his career stalling.

I think his touch and hold up play is great and he could be a great player for us. Like I say he has potential to be that.

  • 47 lochinvar // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:21 AM

    Bingo team

    Mitrovic

  • 48 Ian Toon // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:22 AM

Jimmy- A number of good judges on here still feel Mitrovic has still got to show what he is capable of. Looking back to Andy Carroll and Sholla in the Championship, is he going to make the same sort of impact?

  • 49 expatmag // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:31 AM

    JIMMY SMITH

Absolutely mate. Nothing wrong with a few wines. Hasnt dulled my senses though.

You say tbere is not enough competition especially up front.

    If you count the cup……….

    8 games played
    18 goals scored
    4 goals conceded
    6 clean sheets
    10 different goalscorers
    Gayle has 4 in 6
    Mitrovic has 1 in 1
    Perez has 3 in 7

Please explain where we are deficient?

Or has the Sake gone to your head?

  • 50 Markaccus // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:33 AM

Still, i haven’t gone as “almost the same” as I thought i would. Rafa has got me second guessing myself now 😮

  • 54 Sliema // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:41 AM

My Rafa Bingo entry is as follows:

    Sels,
    Anita, Lascelles, Mbemba, Lazaar
    Shelvey, Hayden,
    Ritchie, Diame, Goooooofy
    Gayle

I’d like to see mitro again though paired with Gayle perhaps. @ home to this wolves team we should be able to pull that off. I think Mitro juat needs a run of games in a team full of confidence, which he will get, we will be raving about him by January.

  • 55 jimmysmith // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:45 AM

Expat, I’m sorry to point this out to you, considering your sharp senses and all, but I didn’t by any chalk say we don’t have enough competition.

  • 56 Jib // Sep 16, 2016 at 10:46 AM

Unai Emery the manager of PSG is learning what Eric Gerets and Didier Deschamps learned at Marseilles and Pardew and Bruce learned in the PL.
Hatem ben Arfa can be difficult.

He cannot get into the PSG side regularly and will probably go back to Nice in January on loan.
    The striker for Nice ?

    Mario Balotelli.

Potential banana skin on Saturday , Wolves had actually been doing okay in the league until 72nd minute against Barnsley and had been letting in few goals .. hope players aren’t overconfident

  • 61 Slank // Sep 16, 2016 at 11:12 AM

With previous managers it was relatively easy to second guess their teams but with Rafa its much more difficult.

It’s possibly because he has a greater choice or / and because he has a deliberate policy of rotation with little favouritism.

Having said that, it would appear that there some players he likes to play more often than others but are not allowed to think of themselves as automatic choices.

Sels would appear to have earned his place.

Lascelles would appear to be his first choice for obvious reasons.

Shelvey has no equal or sensible alternative.

The nucleus spine of the team is there except for the player up top. I don’t see Murphy or Gayle being a serious alternative to Mitrovich but this season has thrown up some unexpected but welcome performances from players many had written off. Mitrovich still needs to prove to himself, his manager and the fans that he is the right person to lead the line.

I think Shelvey would be droppable if his for dipped. There are a couple of ways it could be done, without losing much of what he brings.
Diame drops into his role, then either Perez cones in to no10, or Gayle drops back there, and mitro comes in. Alternatively, we can play 2 strikers.

It could be a classic ‘after the Lord Mayors show’.

I’ve seen it so many times before where the fans expectations go through the roof based on the previous games performance but the performance they are now seeing doesn’t live up to what they expected.

    Hope I’m wrong.

I think with matches coming up so thick and fast – rotation is an easy “sell” to the players.

There will be no spitting out of dummies and players frustration will be vented in better performance and endeavour.

I’m fully expecting an entirely different eleven starting on Tuesday from tomorrow.

What a message to the League if we could beat Wolves with two different teams !

Beer / Tuff…Quite a question that one. Does position matter? For instance, a possible mathematical scenario would include say having 2 GK’s on the pitch, but one say in defense?

  • 83 beermonkey // Sep 16, 2016 at 12:30 PM

    Essex

I did see who was the worst it made me chuckle

I also think he will keep mitro in there and gayle will play in the cup game
but the rest of ur team is what I would expect although he might keep clark in there and rotate a lot in the cup game

  • 84 Ibizatoon // Sep 16, 2016 at 12:32 PM

Essex…It is vitally important that the winbar is kept in check.

The consequences could be deadly. 89% on for a win doesn’t bode well.

  • 85 Jib // Sep 16, 2016 at 12:45 PM

    Mr Tuff
It’s actually more difficult than it looks.

At first it just looks like perming 10 from 25

Taking Sels as a fixture and 2 always out injured from a squad of 27.

However in pure maths you have to sub-divide into 3 groups
    Backs Midfielders and Forwards
    Each sub group has permutations
    Backs 4 from 6
    Midfielders 4 from 10
    Forwards 2 from 4
complicated by factors such as :-

Some backs can play midfield and vice versa

    The formation Rafa chooses.

This is a pretty close model
    4C2 • 4C2 • 7C3 • 7! = 6350400

    about 6 million

  • 86 magpie_in_ohio // Sep 16, 2016 at 3:01 PM
