Striker Admits To Huge Competition For Places Up Front

8:36 am, Friday, September 16th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 6 Comments

New signing Daryl Murphy is yet to make his debut for Newcastle, so maybe he will get a run-out tomorrow against Wolves in a game we must win.

It may be a bit of a banana skin game for us after our terrific showing on Tuesday night in the 6-0 mauling of QPR in west London.

After that game Rafa  did say he was pleased with all the strikers in the squad and certainly Ayoze Perez looked a very good player on Tuesday night and showed a lot of physical prowess in that game – that was good to see.

Mitro also finally got a good  run-out in a game and he needs more playing time  to get match fit.

Dwight Gayle has been interviewed today in the local papers and he starts by talking about one of his strike partners – Aleksandar Mitrovic

“He’s a great striker, a great hold-up player. Me and him could work really well together.”

“My runs off of his flick-ons would work well.”  “But we’ve got some great different strikers here, and all different combinations would work well.”

“I think the competition is perfect for the team.” “We would have to go differently against each team. I think that’s what we need.”

“The gaffer will pick the right players for each game.”

“Obviously, Mitro and I both wanted the number 9 shirt, so the manager said that a shooting competition was the easiest way to decide it.”

“But then, before we went out to training, Mitro just said ‘here, Dwight, you have it’.”  “That was it, really.”

“It was a really nice gesture – very mature of him – and it was a sign of togetherness.”

“We’re all together trying to do the same thing. It was nice of him.”

There is certainly huge competition for the striker positions, but there’s also huge competition in every single position these days.

Gayle has scored four goals already for Newcastle and both Ayoze Perez and Jonjo Shelvey now have 3 goals each.

It’s also good to see that 11 players have already scored for the club this season.

The manager will continue to rotate players tomorrow as he continues to use his squad very wisely this season.

Honestly speaking we really don’t have great competition up top. Mitrovic and Perez are, at their best, far and away our best strikers.

Early days to make that claim. They have of course played together whereas other combinations haven’t. Good to have so many options.
The combination of Mitrovic and Pérez both scored in a 2-1 victory against Spurs. Excellent blend but Gayle equally could play with either Murphy or Mitrovic.

Err… honestly speaking Jimmy we have great competition up top. We’re the league top scorers. Gayle has four in five, Mitro scored and looked dangerous in his first start and Perez looked like a man with a serious point to prove. A proven Championship goalscorer who scored an important international goal during the last week who hasn’t kicked a ball yet. We’ve obviously got very different ideas on what competition for places is

its going to be a hard call to drop perez after last game but i,m sure gayle could do just as good a job, i,d like to see mitro start too for a half and give murphy 45 mins , its looking healthy up top and the midfielders are giving plenty ammo , hopefully we can get a couple of goals cushion and see a couple of the new signings
    hopefully another clean sheet too

Gayle has the guile of Perez. Murphy has the quality of Mitro. I really doubt it.

I think the competition up front is actually very good- each player offers something different:
    – Gayle: pace
    – Mitro: power
    – Perez: skill
    – Murphy: experience
