Mbemba, Diame And Gayle Return For Newcastle

2:01 pm, Saturday, September 17th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 231 Comments

nufc-emblemwolverhampton_wanderers-svg

Rafa Benitez has just announced the team to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers this afternoon at St. James’ Park and Rafa has made only three changes.

Newcastle: Sels; Anita Mbemba Lascelles (c)  Dummett; Shelvey Hayden; Ritchie Diame Perez; Gayle
Subs: Darlow, Yedlin, Clark, Colback, Atsu, Gouffran, Mitrovic

So only three changes from Rafa today and three strong players return in Chancel Mbemba, Mohamed Diame and Dwight Gayle – so that’s a very strong side today with a very strong bench – of course.

Newcastle fans could see Christian Atsu in action today and let’s hope he scores – he’s promised some celebration if that happens.

This is what Rafa Benitez has said about today’s game against Wolves:

“I said after the game in the press conference that I think that the team can still improve and can play better. I won’t say score more goals, but we can play better.”

“I think it was a great game, a fantastic game, with a lot of positives, but still we can improve, and when I say that, I could see the reaction.”

“People take that to mean score more goals, but it means to control the game in another way and keep playing well.”

“I was telling them, I was very clear, that every game is different.”  “This is the Championship, and it’s a tough, tough competition and we have to be sure that we’re ready for the next game.”

“We have already enjoyed these couple of days, we’ve been training, preparing for the game, and I told them that we have to respect the opponents because they are a good team.”

“They were doing well. They lost the other day, but after 72 minutes they were still in the game. I have seen the game and they had some chances, so I think it will be totally different from what people are expecting.”

“Because the team is winning, because the team are doing well, it’s not easy to give the other players a chance, but we will try.”

“We have the cup on Tuesday and we know that we have to change players but at the same time give opportunities to everyone to be involved. If they train well, if they work very hard, I think that they deserve to be there.”

Newcastle fans expect us to win this game today.

So is this a 4-4-1-1 then with Perez in behind Gayle?

  • 2 mindshaft // Sep 17, 2016 at 2:03 PM

No RafaBingo win for me , Perez and Dummett playing screwed me over – decent team though and expect a win and a clean sheet

Cheers mate, I should have guessed with Gouffran being rested.

    HWTL 3-0 Toon.

  • 9 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 17, 2016 at 2:07 PM

I got 10/11 also. Had Yedlin in ahead of Perez. Thought Rafa was done with playing Perez LW so never considered him starting there.

  • 10 Shadow_Shearer // Sep 17, 2016 at 2:08 PM

I am pleased with anita right back, & not central mid. but dummet is hogging the left back, I’d rather see Lazar get a chance. Maybe rafa is saving him for later.
Shelvey & hayden is a good pairing.

Also it looks like perez on the wing, I’d rather have astu there & perez in centre, diame bench.

It doesn’t look like we are using the depth we actully have. But I trust rafa. So let’s get behind the team!

Disappointed Mitro isn’t starting, don’t like Perez playing on the wing, don’t like Ritchie playing on the right. Defence & midfield looks good though.
I see Lazaar & Murphy haven’t made it to the bench again

I think I should get points as the only one I got wrong was Perez who I even said I found it hard to leave him out haha

  • 17 NUFCPaul // Sep 17, 2016 at 2:12 PM

Makes sense to play close to our strongest eleven today and play the slightly weaker ‘second eleven’ in the cup midweek. I know Rafa wants to win everything, but he’s smart enough to know that three points in the league are more important than a cup game. Getting knocked out of the cup to have less games and less injuries/more recovery time is almost preferable. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to win a cup along the way, but not at the expense of not getting promoted. It’s all about priorities.

  • 18 NUFCPaul // Sep 17, 2016 at 2:14 PM

I got today’s starting eleven spot on, I just forgot to post it. I told the dog though, so he’ll back me up. Honest I did, guvnor.

This is a significant comment by him:-

“Because the team is winning, because the team are doing well, it’s not easy to give the other players a chance, but we will try.”

I don’t think he likes to tinker too much, which is what I base my Bingo teams on.

I do think there’ll be a few changes for Tuesday though. A bit more of a challenge for us!!

I think you need to have a different game as this one is far too hard, how about predicting how many changes to be made from the previous game, with points awarded per change, for example, if you say 1 change and it is one change you get 1 point, if you suggest 2 changes and there are 2 changes you get 2 points, 3 changes 3 points and so on.

Those were his two best games this season.

  • 106 JamesToon // Sep 17, 2016 at 3:55 PM

so annoying though people saying before the game about how we were gonna hammer them, just embarrassing really.

Players need to sort it out and play with more intensity

  • 107 Spoof // Sep 17, 2016 at 3:55 PM

    SUTTY

I’ve seen Ritchie on both wings and he is far better on the right, as was Townsend, both left footed but both far more effective on the right, as was Chris Waddle whereas you get right footed left wingers who are hopeless on the right, like Jonas and Alan Devonshire.

  • 108 WheresSholaNow // Sep 17, 2016 at 3:57 PM

I don’t understand the rotation.. We won so comfortably and can’t have expended much energy given how dominant we were against QPR so why not stick with a winning team? We have the cup game to give other players a go. Gouffran only played 60 minutes the other night, Mitro was such a handful he should’ve been given another chance and Diame hasn’t looked all that impressive since the start of the season for me, Perez is the better 10 when paired with Mitrovic.

  • 109 Mister Tuff // Sep 17, 2016 at 3:58 PM

It is not working so far – get the subs on for the start of the second half.
This is where we’ll find out what Rafa can do -diagnosing what went wrong and rectifying it.
None of this 60 mins subs mullarkey today – get em on now.

  • 110 JamesToon // Sep 17, 2016 at 3:58 PM

need atsu on for his pace and flair on for diame, move perez in the middle then bring mitro on if nothing has changed by 65mins.

  • 111 firebug666 // Sep 17, 2016 at 3:59 PM

Still have 45 minutes lads, and the only thing separating us is a Mbemba mistake, though he has made a few this half.

I think we are missing Gouffran on the left. make that change and we will win the game.

  • 112 SUTTY1978 // Sep 17, 2016 at 3:59 PM

Spoof, what do you classify as better? He’s far more productive in terms of creating chances for others playing on the left. He’s not really produced that much playing on the right.
Townsend used to cut in to score goals, we don’t get that from Ritchie so I don’t see what he adds on the right that he doesn’t playing on the left. Some of his crosses from the left against QPR were a delight

  • 113 AncientC // Sep 17, 2016 at 4:00 PM

Wolves leaked goals late in the game against Barnsley, the idea was probably to keep the gunpowder in reserve until Wolves become vulnerable.

  • 114 Spoof // Sep 17, 2016 at 4:02 PM

    Rotonda

Ignore colwell as he is a big style fool, he berated Rafa for changing a team who won 0-6 but also said that we have Yedlin and Lazaar who are both quick FB’s on the bench whilst we have two slow FB’s on the pitch and the quick FB’s should be playing, figure that one out, how can you bring in two FB’s who didn’t play without changing the team, the fact that Paul Dummett is very quick seems to have been lost on him, like I say he is a jerk who is best ignored.

  • 115 SUTTY1978 // Sep 17, 2016 at 4:02 PM

Ancient, unfortunately Zenga had another plan!

  • 116 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 17, 2016 at 4:04 PM

Diame seems to be going backwards. Was better when he was supposedly 70% fit, ran more too.

Don’t know what happened to him “running all match once I’m fully fit.”, as that first 45 further proved. Talk is cheap. All the soundbites from the players sounding like they’ve cracked it. Only so much grounding in reality Rafa can do in his interviews, it’s in NUFC fans nature to get carried away and the players get caught up in it.

Hopefully that 45 was a bump back to terra firma and Rafa made it abundantly clear at HT.

  • 118 AncientC // Sep 17, 2016 at 4:05 PM

SUTTY: I have to say, I was surprised Wolves went 4-3-3, fair play to them for coming to play football. I think we can pick them off in the 2nd half. A draw at this stage wouldn’t be a nightmare.

  • 122 SUTTY1978 // Sep 17, 2016 at 4:09 PM

Ancient, fair play to them for going on the attack. Always seems to me that we are set up for the counter when Gayle plays. Doesn’t work if the other team play deep and conceded possession.
I think all Toon fans know Perez is a useless winger, you’d have thought Rafa would have known that by now.

    Jib

he is being negative and contradicting himself in the process, you can’t criticize a manager for not making changes and then complain that we are playing the same two fullbacks, sorry Jib but colwell is getting what he deserves, stop trying to score brownie points on Rotonda and look at what gets said.

    Awful from minute 1.

Hopefully Perez will never play LW again. Thought Rafa would’ve sussed that by now.

  • 145 Slank // Sep 17, 2016 at 4:23 PM

    Yes, ironic, isn’t it?

  • 200 Spoof // Sep 17, 2016 at 4:57 PM

What we are seeing is the downside of the rotation policy that Rafa has, yes the good side is that all are fit and ready when called upon and later in the season the fitness levels will pay dividends, but what is more important, fitness or fluidity, one change two many and the fluidity is gone, that is what we are witnessing now, I have to say that I prefer a spine week in and week out where they all play well together and change it when it is necessary.

Different strikers prefer a different type of service, can a suppler instantly offer a different type of service week in week out, I don’t think they can, we need a spine to work from and we haven’t got that, and will we ever get that with the rotation policy, we will get promoted, I have no doubt about that, but long term, I’m not sure sure that it will work, if Wolves can exploit the uncertainty then what will the PL teams do.

Ritchie is expected to give a service to the strikers, the strikers are so different that his service has got to be different as well, so how can he possibly get into a routine and give a good service, this is the downside of Rafa’s rotation, personally I don’t like it, I prefer your best side and then challenge the rest to force they way in, and if they do get in then they stay there until someone forces them out.

Getting a 6-0 win mid week you’d think we go into this game sky high and certain to score a goal instead we lose 2-0 and get a player sent off. This result makes that 6-0win a bit costly it’s as if they used their entire energy on that game and finish the week as a team who’s relient on luck.

These things are good in the PL but in the championship I’d rather have a group of 1-0 wins because promotion is most important meaning points come first entertainment 2nd.

If you think yes, then the defeat is on Rafa, if you think we still would have lost then it’s on the players.

I pointed out three things before the game

I don’t like Perez playing on the wing
I think Mitro should have started

  • 226 Shadow_Shearer // Sep 17, 2016 at 5:09 PM

I said through the week, these 5 or 6 nil wins will only come now & again. The rest of the time we will need to grind out 1 or 2 nil wins.

Meaning this league is still gonna be very difficult. 80 or 90 % of the games are gonna be very tough.

Yes I still believe we will win this league. But it won’t be easy. Expect tough games every week, & not straight forward victories. There is still a very long way to go. About 35 or 36 games still left.
