Rafa’s Frame Of Mind Revealed After Stunning Defeat

7:59 am, Monday, September 19th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 2 Comments

Mohamed Diame has revealed how Rafa Benitez was in the dressing room after the 2-0 home defeat to Wolves on Saturday – he was upset.

It was an important game where Newcastle could not only get their 7th win on the trot – the 6th in the league –  but could even make an effort to hit the top of the league for the first time this season.

But it was a huge letdown not only because of the defeat, but even more so because it was our worst performance of the season and at home in front of a capacity crowd of over 52,000.

Mohamed Diame get booked on Saturday

It was also completely unexpected after we had just won away 6-0 at QPR in our previous game three days before – and Wolves had been beaten 4-0 at home by Barnsley.

This is what Mo said Rafa was like after the game:

“It’s normal for the manager to be upset whenever we are not doing anything right.”

“Against Wolves we didn’t but we have to keep the confidence and keep looking forward to the next game.” “To be honest I don’t know what went wrong.”

“But we are all really disappointed. It was an important game for us because we were at home and we have just had a great result away.”

“It was important to confirm that result but we didn’t and we have to make sure we don’t lose the confidence we had because we know we have got a quality squad so we just need to come back, work hard and be ready for the next match.”

“Early on we felt something wasn’t right in our play.”

“Normally we always get the possession and provide a good tempo in the game but against Wolves we were playing the wrong way for whatever reason.”

“The cup game we have to use it to get back the confidence and to get the fans back behind us again too.”

“We need to win this game and then after that get ready for the next league game.” “Villa will be a battle.”

“We must treat every single game like that and stay focused on our job.”

“Even though we got a very good result against QPR we need to stay very focused and this was a disappointing result against Wolves but we will be fine.”

The two teams go again tomorrow night with much changed sides in the EFL Cup 3rd round and it would be good if we can stay in the cup.

We expect a much improved performance from the lads and a much reduced attendance.

Comments welcome.

    I tried that

Giving my head a shake doesn’t seem to have changed my opinion.

I only listened to the commentary but from the get go Lowes and Anderson were constantly referring as to how lack lustre the team appeared .
If they usd the phrase “after the Lord Mayors show” once , they used it a dozen times , even before the KO , as if they were half expecting that performance.
Sluggish was how .com described the performance – I like the last paragraph in their summation of the match

“It’s hard to believe we’ll post such a collectively bad display again this season, but this was a massive reality check for those on and off the field who had started to believe the hype – and maybe no bad thing.”
