All Change – Yedlin, Hanley, Clark, Lazaar And Murphy Start

6:48 pm, Tuesday, September 20th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 217 Comments

nufc-emblemWolves FC

Rafa Benitez has just named his team for the 3rd round of the FL Cup tonight against Wolves after they surprisingly beat us 2-0 on Saturday to end our six game winning streak in all competitions and he gives starting berths to Yedlin, Lazaar and Murphy – with the last two making their debuts and all starting for the first time for Newcastle.

Newcastle: Darlow; Yedlin Hanley Clark Lazaar; Shelvey Colback; Ritchie Diame Gouffran; Murphy
Subs; Woodman, Dummett, Lascelles, Hayden, Atsu, Perez, Mitrovic

So we make that 8 changes Rafa has made from the side that lost to Wolves – and he is making a statement there – the performance on Saturday was simply not good enough and we need to be much better tonight.

It’s a massive opportunity for all the players starting the game tonight and Jonjo Shelvey gets another chance after his very poor showing on Saturday and he’s made the captain.

There’s Rafa’s man-management in action and he’s showing massive faith in the former Swansea play-maker.

Four in five fans think we can win this game tonight.

    Darklow? Tedlin? Who?

  • 2 Ibizatoon // Sep 20, 2016 at 6:49 PM

    We’ve been cheated!

I like Darklow mind. Tedlin not so much.

  • 3 msk21dec // Sep 20, 2016 at 6:50 PM

Team looks balanced so i think we will win. Now it all depends on players desire tonight although new cb pairing.. Could that be the problem tonight

  • 4 Ron Knee // Sep 20, 2016 at 6:50 PM

    Anybody get it right?

  • 5 Ibizatoon // Sep 20, 2016 at 6:51 PM

Have been wanting Darlow to play. Not sure why he wasn’t given the chance to keep his spot this season really. Imo, he earned it last season.

Still, he now has his chance. Good luck Darklow!

  • 8 Budge123 // Sep 20, 2016 at 6:51 PM

    Surely Ritchie needs a rest?
Would much rather have him at the weekend than tonight.
Looks more balanced that the team that started on Saturday.

  • 9 BandB // Sep 20, 2016 at 6:54 PM

I was just typing mine in when the team was announced.

    It was perfect, honest.

Apart from Hanley, Lazaar and Murphy.

  • 10 Ibizatoon // Sep 20, 2016 at 6:56 PM

    BandB… 🙂

Budge…I would have thought he could use a rest too, however, not sure who i’d start in front of him? Did Atsu impress when he played?

    Bless you, whoever just sneezed.

    Radio feed guys?

  • 12 Spoof // Sep 20, 2016 at 6:58 PM

    FFS

if you’re going to rotate and rest players then do it correctly, where is Gamez, play him FB with Yedlin at right wing and give Ritchie a break, Ritchie is going to be screwed at this rate, wtf is he playing at.

  • 13 Ibizatoon // Sep 20, 2016 at 6:59 PM

  • 16 Ibizatoon // Sep 20, 2016 at 7:01 PM

No Williamson for Wolves. We can relax when defending corners at least.

  • 18 Jib // Sep 20, 2016 at 7:03 PM

I said all the unused subs from Saturday would be in, I’m surprised he’s risking Shelvey in a cup game , entirely new back 4.
    Who is captain ?

  • 19 Ibizatoon // Sep 20, 2016 at 7:03 PM

Right, who’s got the permanent marker? Shaving foam and razor?

    Now don’t wake him…

  • 21 WWSBRD // Sep 20, 2016 at 7:04 PM

  • 22 firebug666 // Sep 20, 2016 at 7:04 PM

Ahhh well, no 5 points for me, but now at least we will get to see Lazaar at LB.

  • 23 BandB // Sep 20, 2016 at 7:04 PM

    C’mon Murphy lad.
We’re all behind you and in just three hours (or possibly less) you’ll either be the future of the club or the biggest plank since the keel of HMS Victory was laid.
    No pressure.

  • 24 Ibizatoon // Sep 20, 2016 at 7:04 PM

    Opta stats

These two sides have never met in the League Cup.

Newcastle haven’t beaten Wolves in a domestic cup match since the 1951 FA Cup semi-final replay, drawing two and losing three since then.

Wolves have been eliminated from each of their last nine League Cup games against sides from the same division as them.

Wolves have lost their last three League Cup games away from home, conceding 10 goals and failing to score themselves.

This will be Newcastle’s fourth consecutive home game in the competition, winning two and losing one of the previous three.

Saw G2 and Rafa having a coffee this afternoon; witnessed G2 handing over print outs of Rafa bingo line ups and heard Rafa say: “no-one will ever win Rafa bingo” followed by an evil/ chilling laugh.

  • 27 Ibizatoon // Sep 20, 2016 at 7:06 PM

Ron…Injured apparently. I actually don’t mind Williamson one bit. Limited player, but did give it his all.

I wish him well with his “glute” (what the…?) problem.

I’d go as far as saying, if someone guesses a line up at some stage, it is undeniable that they are indeed Rafa.

  • 30 Lindisfarne // Sep 20, 2016 at 7:10 PM

Its a bit obvious to say that the back line has never played together but it is slightly worrying that six of the eight changes are defensive.

  • 56 AncientC // Sep 20, 2016 at 7:45 PM

I would like to have seen Perez play in behind Murphy, I am not sure why Diame is being played in such an advanced position. Diame was playing defensive midfield when he nearly earned a move to Arsenal, back at the peak of his powers.

    MAUTITOON

We have played 8 for 15 pts which leaves 38 left.
Win 6 lose 1 from now on means we lose games 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35, so we win 33 and lose 5 for 99pts + 15 for a grand total of 114 pts.
I’d say that might get an automatic promotion place 🙂
It’s just a bit of fun as I really can’t see us avoiding losses and draws along the way – can’t remember my final points estimate for the season but I think it was 99 – more realistic than 114.

If we win 5 and lose 3 – our current form we’ll end up with 86 pts, so we do need to follow Rafa’s advice of looking to improve.

Spoof – yeh I read all the comments. For sure no team selection system is perfect but I think the ultimate proof is in the records of managers who use it all the time – depends on squad strength, injuries etc., but I think Rafa has got all the angles covered in his 20 odd years of rotating squads. As Bobby said – the proof will not be known till back end of the season, so jury is still out for the Toon. One loss in 7 though does not show it up as a failing system. We did start badly mind.

Thats another belter from goofy, though. His early NUFC career was good. He was one of our top 5 creatuve players (assists and chances created) in the season we finished 5th. He is revelling as an attacking wide player, as he gets the chance to get himself into the box and grab some goals. Add the fact he is playing against lower league defences, it’s just the kind of pick-me-up he needed.

Looks like every game that Gouffran starts we win……

Richie getting more space tonight maybe something to do with having a striker who can hold it up and having full backs who move forward creating space?

  • 131 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 20, 2016 at 8:34 PM

Ritchie managed 46 league matches and 5 cup games last time in the Championship, hopefully he can maintain his form throughout as he is going to be key for us.

Hasn’t sounded like a great match, but good goals, and a solid lead. Can look to give some others a run out, and give some an early finish before the big game this weekend.

Murphy doesn’t sound like he has been great, but he can’t be match fit so difficult/unfair to judge him. Will be difficult to rotate the strikers and still expect them all to be firing on all cylinders if we just play with 1.

  • 132 JamesToon // Sep 20, 2016 at 8:35 PM

gouffran is rapidly going from being one of my disliked players (from the mccardew days) to one of my favourites. What a volley, what a man.

Just shows what good coaching, hard work and determination can do. Defensive midfielder my ar$e

  • 133 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 20, 2016 at 8:35 PM

Just watched the goals. Another cracking volley from Gouff. If Ritchie was trying to pick him out, then a superb ball as well. First was well worked and well taken.

    taco

agree, i’d bring atsu on for ritchie at some point.

Lazaar looks a bit shaky, got decent pace and a lot more progressive and forward thinking than dummett, however hes been abysmal with his crossing and passing so far (apart from his cross to murphy) hopefully he’ll grow into the game

    Lil,

I am always amazed to see the “Ritchie must be knackered” line of thinking.
People said he would need to lie up after one game on international duty.
He is widely recognised as being a Duracell bunny physically, with a mental resilience to match.
He will need time to put his feet up as he is not a machine. But he is the nearest thing to a banker we have.

  • 140 Markaccus // Sep 20, 2016 at 8:38 PM

  • 141 Jib // Sep 20, 2016 at 8:40 PM

    Interesting stat
    Of 114 career goals
Daryl Michael Murphy has only scored 21 in the first half

  • 142 BandB // Sep 20, 2016 at 8:41 PM

Gouffran held his value at around £11m for ages after he failed to nail down a first team place at Newcastle. It did drop eventually.
But I’m pleased they didn’t sell him, as they were willing to do.
Not absolutely top class, but better than almost anything we could expect to buy in at this level.

  • 143 Markaccus // Sep 20, 2016 at 8:41 PM

    Jib

Possibly a guy who takes advantage of battered and tired defenders, then.

  • 144 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Sep 20, 2016 at 8:44 PM

How have the new boys done so far?

    Achraf Lazaar

Steady start at left-back, where he’s filling in for Paul Dummett. Certainly looks athletic enough and gets up the pitch a bit more than Paul Dummett did.

But Wolves did get in behind him once, when Yedlin had to save the day with a crucial intervention.

    Daryl Murphy

Full of running and has added a real presence up front for Newcastle. Not sure whether it’s a coincidence that Mo Diame, who has more space with Wolves preoccupied with Murphy, is playing much, much better.

    DeAndre Yedlin

His speed and athleticism are a real boost for Newcastle. Not put a foot wrong so far – surely pressing for a start at Villa with Vurnon Anita out.

    From Lee Ryder

And he has an incredibly professional attitude. Never heard him whinge at all. Ever. Even when our previous ‘managers’ used him all over the pitch. He just gets on with it.

  • 146 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 20, 2016 at 8:44 PM

    Taco,
I think he will pull Ritchie, for Atsu at some stage. I wouldn’t say it is cause Ritchie needs a rest though.

    James,
Yeah, I’m not criticising him as such, he will need to get to pace. I think he and Mitro are our best options as the focal point of our attack moving forward.

    BandB,
Yeah, he has played pretty much 40+ games every season since he became a regular. His energy, work rate and stamina are pat of his key attributes. Unless Atsu has an incredible season, I can’t see Ritchie being rotated out all that often.

  • 147 BandB // Sep 20, 2016 at 8:46 PM

Interesting to see no Mitro at all. Considering Mitro has said he feels he needs minutes, and he does seem like a player who needs a run to get fully to speed, I am a bit surprised. Still, Murphy also needed time, and has previously had less opportunities.

Will be interesting to see who starts up top on Saturday. Villa game is on TV over here, but the stupid Chelsea game is the same time which will make it hard to watch it in a bar. The Villa fan here is planning on getting satellite in especially for the match!

Still, he has time on his side.

  • 200 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 20, 2016 at 9:42 PM

    BandB,
You may be right. I think he may start Murphy at Villa given him getting a full 90 tonight. I’m not sure giving Mitro nothing is the way to do it though. He will be desperate to impress when he finally gets a go, and it will potentially lead to him over committing himself, in a similar way to Spurs at the end of last season.

I’m not saying he should automatically start because of that, he needs to earn the place, but he scored and got an assist on his first league start, and was rated highly for his overall performance as well at QPR. He then gets dropped for the next 2 games. It doesn’t incentivise good performances, and it will be frustrating for him.

I’d be very surprised if Rafa didn’t think Mitrovic was his best striker, with by far the most potential. It’s how he gets the best out of a kid thrown into in hideously malfunctioning corporate body last season and finding himself suddenly not an automatic first choice striker in lower division now he’s available.
My hunch is that Rafa will give every opportunity for Mitrovic and Perez to flower, believing them both to be international quality players. But “every opportunity” may mean biding his time.

Who would people like in the cup? I wouldn’t mind a prem team tbh as it would be an interesting test to see how far off we are from their level? At the same time would love an easy draw as a cup run would be nice

  • 213 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 20, 2016 at 9:56 PM

    BandB,
Yeah, Mitro did well last season in my opinion given his age and everything else going on at the club. 9 goals and 6 assists isn’t a bad return.

I agree that he and Perez have the most potential as a pairing in this set up, I would expect Rafa to also think this. He may well bide his time with giving them plenty of match time together, but I thought it was a shame he didn’t let them continue on Sat given how well they played and linked at QPR.

Plenty of games and some opposition will require different approaches, I’m sure we will see the Mitro/Perez combo again soon.

  • 214 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 20, 2016 at 9:59 PM

    James,
    I think Murphy might start.

In the cup, I wouldn’t mind a Prem side in a home draw. Sunderland, Stoke, West Ham, Saints, Palace, Bournemouth, Hull would all be interesting draws for us.

  • 215 jimmysmith // Sep 20, 2016 at 10:02 PM

Murphy deserved his game, and Gayle has scored goals so Rafa can hardly marginalise either for the returning Mitro, who still may well start at Villa. We would probably need one to emerge as the go to and dominant striker if we were to guarantee promotion and I’d agree the one with the greatest capacity is Mitrovic. It does look though that our best bet is one of the big men up top, with Diame and Perez in the hole, leaving Gayle with a more uncertain role.

  • 216 The overrated Frenchman // Sep 20, 2016 at 10:03 PM

I agree it seems that Benitez doesn’t like Mitrovic. There was probably some truth in the speculation that the club was looking to sell him before the start of the season. He probably should have been, we are not going to get much out of him the way he is being managed.

  • 217 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 20, 2016 at 10:06 PM

    Jimmy,
I think Goofy’s emergence has made this more difficult. Gayle spoke of Rafa talking to him about playing wide when he signed. But Goofy’s performances have made him difficult to leave out. Maybe Gayle will drop into the number 10 at some point in the next few weeks with one of Mitro or Murphy. I think that would require a more solid bas in midfield, and could well come about if Tiote is brought back into the fold.
