Newcastle have drawn Championship club Preston at home in the 4th round of the EFL (League) Cup.

Sunderland got Southampton away.

Ties will be played week starting Monday, 24th October and it just so happens we are at Deepdale in the league on Saturday 29th October so like with Wolves we will play Preston North End in successive games.

We have an excellent chance to go through to the quarter-finals and here is the full draw – with four ties between Premier League clubs and yes – Manchester City vs Manchester United and Liverpool vs Tottenham – unbelievable.

Here is the full draw:

West Ham vs Chelsea
Man Utd vs Man City
Arsenal vs Reading
Liverpool vs Tottenham
Bristol City vs Hull City
Leeds vs Norwich
Newcastle vs Preston
Southampton vs Sunderland

And just realized here’s what we wrote in this article today – must be our lucky day:

“It was a good win and we are now in the last 16 of the EFL Cup and maybe we will draw Preston at home in the 4th round?”

But it really is a great draw for us – one we wanted.

Comments welcome.

Good craic, we are getting the home ties as well, owt happens in the league cup , 100 per cent concentration needed.

  • 3 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:17 PM

Can we hope to dream? Many top sides knocking each other out must give us an outside chance. Fun and games in the cup.

  • 4 firebug666 // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:17 PM

Maybe the gods are smiling on us this year….just maybe!

I have to be honest I wasn’t bothered about who we got in the draw because we have a team that when firing on all cylinders are good enough to beat anyone on the day.

I still believe the team has room to grow, but they will get stronger as the season progresses.

Preston gives us an excellent chance to continue in this competition and get the squad time to get ready for the bigger games to come.

Sometime it is the luck of the draw – wouldn’t fancy playing away at Gooners or the Fools

  • 6 Tsunki // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:28 PM

At this rate it’ll be Bristol city in the semis ha ha yeah right. Man city next up you wait πŸ™

  • 7 Tsunki // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:29 PM

What irony though if we won a cup while in the second tier.

  • 8 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:31 PM

Thing is, the bigger lot still have Europe on their mind and might not risk a full side if we do draw one of them, so you just never know. It’s now moved on from the Micky Mouse cup – coz were still in it late on! At least the Donald Duck cup now. πŸ™‚

  • 9 BeeGuy // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:33 PM

It looks like we have another back to back. Home in the cup and away in the league. Win ’em both, I say.

  • 10 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:36 PM

Tell ya what, West ham need to sort out the problems before the next round or it’s likely to be a bloodbath with Chelsea there in numbers.

  • 11 NoahJ // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:40 PM

it will be 5 games in two weeks around that time. Whilst I would love a cup run, and the draw is basically perfect all round, I really hope we don’t take our eyes of the league. that has to be priority.

I’m not usually a massive fan of rafa’s persistent rotation, but it will be needed around then

  • 12 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:45 PM

Noah, that’s why it makes sense what he’s doing now mate. Everybody knows their job and he can move it around as he chooses because everyone’s had game time. Eight changes last night and we looked steady away.

Less than 10k at Stoke tonight, which is shocking for a pl side.

  • 13 mickybraham // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:45 PM

Great draw! wouldn’t be NUFC without a crazy hope we’ll be in Europe and the Premier League this time next year

  • 14 Vask // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:51 PM

    Nicely put firebug,

I, too, believe the team is good enough to compete. I’d obviously love us to win it especially since I told a makem at work we would. Dumping them out along the way would be glorious. But are they good enough to beat Southampton at St Mark’s?

  • 15 JamesToon // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:51 PM

Quality draw lads. Can you imagine Rafa leading the lads out at Wembley….we can dream!

Honestly, he’ll be a legend if he wins any type of major silverware with us

  • 16 Vask // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:52 PM

    Mark’s is it?

  • 17 JamesToon // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:52 PM

Would love us to give the cups a go, it would be nice to see how far off we are from premier league teams

  • 18 JamesToon // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:55 PM

Honestly don’t believe Rafa’s rotation policy will hinder us, if anything it should do us good as it gives more players opportunities to prove themselves. It’s getting the mentality right, complacency was why we lost against wolves, and I think we could of worked on how to break down stubborn defences like wolves setup. However we saw how the lads reacted from 2 shock defeats, it brought them back down to earth and we went on a 6 game winning run. Hopefully that loss to wolves has given them a kick up the ar$e and we can go on and beat villa and Norwich.

  • 19 JamesToon // Sep 21, 2016 at 10:56 PM

Really really hope we f***ing beat villa, can’t stand their fans

  • 20 mickybraham // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:00 PM

Anyone take another season in the championship for a league cup win?

  • 21 Yo-yo // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:00 PM

    St Mary’s … Vask

Yeh Bristol City to get to the Semis πŸ™‚

  • 22 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:01 PM

I imagine Preston will take all 6k tickets for the game so we should have a minimum of 45k crowd that night, if not a sell out. Won’t be many wanting to miss this cup run now. If we keep getting home draws I fear nobody. If the mackems scrape through and we get them it will be guaranteed a sell out – providing we can beat Preston of course. Let’s not get too far ahead of myself here. πŸ™‚

  • 23 Vask // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:05 PM

    Bob,
My fear is the team seem to gan cack when it’s a full hoose at the church.

  • 24 Vask // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:08 PM

    Cheers yo-yo :s

  • 25 Vask // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:10 PM

    Mick,

I’d accept 2nd place and the cup.

  • 26 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:11 PM

Vask, they should be used to it by then mate. πŸ™‚ Simple facts are they’re going to have to get used to playing in front of big crowds at home. Saturday was a strange one, with a muted crowd and performance and hopefully it was a one off. Damned if I’m stopping going! πŸ™‚

  • 27 GeordieTwo // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:13 PM

Preston in the cup! Preston in the cup!
    Huzzah!!! Huzzah!!!
(I never do a double Huzzah!!!)

  • 28 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:14 PM

Mick, naw, promotion is the target this season because we won’t have the money to improve next season without promotion. God forbid, we might even lose Rafa if that was the case and that’s not even worth contemplating. Got to keep our priorities, but there’s no reason we can’t go all the way with the squad we’ve got.

  • 29 Vask // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:18 PM

Aye fair one bob. Probly try and get to a few this season mesel. Always try to get to a cup game now and again. Not much chance under previous recent managers.

  • 30 Belfast // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:20 PM

From what i’ve seen Villa have been very unlucky thus far. I still expect them to be up there eventually. I would take a draw at their place to be honest.

  • 31 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:21 PM

Vask, ya not kidding mate. If ya missed the first game you generally missed out! πŸ˜‰

  • 32 Vask // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:21 PM

What is good about the league cup is that it is finished in February or March meaning that there is plenty of time for the final push for promotion in the subsequent months. That’s if the boys can keep their feet on the ground and focus on the task afoot.

  • 33 Vask // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:24 PM

I’m keen to see how we do at villa on Saturday. I’ve said it before but it gives us the perfect opportunity to gauge how far we have come since May.

  • 34 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:26 PM

Belfast, you’re right mate. Late goals have been their downfall this season and they’ll be straining at the bit to try and beat us. We need to be 100% on Saturday or we’ll come a cropper. That said, a win will badly hurt them and give us a real boost, so
I expect at least a draw. Not that we seem to do draws this season, so a win it is. πŸ™‚

  • 35 Oldgit1 // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:26 PM

Had said, that to have a good run in any cup you need a lucky manager, Rafa is a lucky manager, plus he won’t put kids in, he will just rotate his first team squad.
Can I just say I love Rafa.

I would further add that I have Colback down as our player of the season and have noticed a few on here having a downer on him, mark my words he will be a very important player for us. Ok he won’t stand out and score 30yd goals for us but he has the graft and determination to succeed although not being eye catching enough. For some on here anyhow. Really pleased with the way things are going, OK can’t see us winning the cup but even if we get beat in the final by say any of the top 4 or 5 teams in the league we will get into Europe.

  • 36 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:31 PM

Vask, you’re on the money there about the final being well before the season ends. It’s also an advantage that bigger teams are still fighting in Europe and these games come up at the right time. Field a strong side in the CL/EL or the League Cup is generally a no brainer and that can only help us.

  • 37 Bobbybee // Sep 21, 2016 at 11:38 PM

Oldgit, Colback does all his work under the radar imo. Works his socks off doing all the dirty work and leaves the glory to others. He was immense last night, winning the ball back time after time. Sprayed some lovely passes about as well. Terribly underrated imo.

Read it and weep mackems. πŸ˜‰

  • 39 true toon // Sep 22, 2016 at 12:27 AM

TBH i think Preston is not favourable to us . I rather have west ham who is struggling at the moment .

  • 40 cyprus // Sep 22, 2016 at 6:51 AM

    Great draw.

On another subject, would be shocking for West Ham if they were to be relegated, new stadium and all. Bilic probably first manager out, followed by Moyes?

Probably Sunderland down, Stoke could improve, but will probably be thereabouts. Who will join the party? Swansea look weak.

  • 41 beautifulmind // Sep 22, 2016 at 6:53 AM

We were so close to getting the mackams in the draw 1/3. That would have been great. Hopefully we’ll get a chance in the next round but I doubt it

Preston North End, now there is a striker, Simon Makienok:

This could be our year, we keep missing the big teams and that’s gotta be good given our team is not quite ready for them, we are still a little inconsistent but are getting better.

The Wolves loss was a blip, a throw back to a previous regime, Rafa was obviously furious and with a swift boot up the jacksie the lads were back on track.

I am confident this squad will get stronger as we eat up this league, Players are now starting to understand each other and work together. We still have a long way to go, but confidence is growing and I really believe that this could be the year we dust out that old glass cupboard and stick a trophy in the middle of it.
