Sels, Clark, Diame And Gayle Start At Villa Park

4:31 pm, Saturday, September 24th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 330 Comments

aston villanufc-emblem

Rafa Benitez has just named the Newcastle United team for today’s tough game at Villa Park and he recalls captain Jamaal Lascelles to the team and Paul Dummett returns at left-back.

Newcastle: Sels, Yedlin, Lascelles (c) Clark, Dummett; Shelvey, Hayden; Ritchie Diame Gouffran; Gayle
Subs: Darlow, Lazaar, Hanley, Tiote, Atsu, Perez, Mitrovic

So Clark keeps his place and lines up against his old club today while Sels is back in goal and as expected DeAndre Yedlin retains his position at right back.

Captain Jamaal Lascelles comes back in and Jonjo Shelvey retains his position in the team and partners Isaac Hayden in central midfield.

Cheick Tiote made the journey to the Midlands today and is on the bench for Newcastle as his future remains uncertain.

This is what Rafa has said about today’s game:

“There is a little bit of distance between us and Aston Villa but if we can do well, we’ll be higher and Villa will be deep in the table.”

“There’s still a lot of games to play and the level of the teams is really good.” “I still say if we win, fine, if we can’t win we’ve got to keep pushing and working hard.”

“We have to try to do things in the same way.” “I have the confidence that the team will improve and be better.”

Seven in ten fans think we can win this game today.

Is it too late to submit my entry?

  • 2 Belfast // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:34 PM

Disappointed not to see Murphy there. Good to see Tiote on bench though.

  • 3 El Sleeve // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:35 PM

Darlow Hanley and Murphy, surely? oh well, in Rafa we must trust

  • 4 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:36 PM

Tiote back on the bench! Looks like he might have to earn his wages soon!!

Still a bit concerned about Gayle not being able to hold the ball up

    Percy staging a comeback!

  • 8 Belfast // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:37 PM

Probably the first time in years we’ve actually had a proper squad of players. Good options not even making the bench.

I agree, I thought he would be the one to mess us my selection to be honest.

An own goal along with a few other mistakes must have been more than Rafa could take. I expect he will get back into the team with some hard work.

  • 10 James RS // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:38 PM

    Oh no not Sels again

Maybe but other than that match he has been fantastic this season imo, cut above the league, shame for him but big day for Clark surprised Rafa has put that much pressure on him but hope it works out

Oh sorry firebug I really thought you’d done it.

    Nah
Don’t like it – No outlet when under pressure.

me would of played Darlow and Murphy up front for Gayle

  • 22 Jib // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:47 PM

It was probably between Clark and M’Bemba.

Clark got the nod for his knowledge of the opposition.

M’Bemba will be first on the team sheet for Wednesdays match against Norwich

Tbh I really though Colback would be starting today but that was after the fact haha

Next week Id of said he was a cert but with Tiote back who knows haha

  • 24 Bobbybee // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:49 PM

Oh well, 9/11 ain’t to bad for a first effort. Thought he might have gone with Colback after the other night, but what do I know? 🙂 Whoops! Ivan Toney sent off – naughty boy. Palace sickened the mackems lmao! How does it go? 2-0, and you… er, messed it up? Something like that anyway. 😉

  • 25 TyneMouth // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:51 PM

There appears to be a surprisingly large number of apologists for Alan ‘Judas’ Pardew on this blog.
This was a spineless, deceitful chancer, who betrayed the supporters.
    Shameless, opportunistic and eventual deserter.
There are those with such short memory’s.

  • 26 Bobbybee // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:51 PM

Well done firebug marra, nice to see one of the good guys scoring five points 🙂

  • 27 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:52 PM

Damn, had Perez in for Gayle. 10/11. I think I’m understanding him, just thought he’d pick Perez because it was unlikely lol.

  • 33 firebug666 // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:55 PM

    WWSBRD

Rafa gets quite concerned about energy levels, Colback made it his mission to cover every blade of grass at SJP midweek, so might have been a little knacked.

Fresh legs on against what has been a poor Villa side, we have lots of pace so we might just shock them… and me!

  • 34 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:56 PM

Only worry about us putting Clark in is it might inspire Villa against us plus he will be getting abuse all game ! Good luck to the lad !

  • 35 BandB // Sep 24, 2016 at 4:56 PM

The problem for this Rafa Bingo for us real bingo aficionados is that it has no rollover jackpot.
I’d like to see the points roll over until the next game, or at least go up a point a time after every unclaimed week.
And star prize should be a teasmade.

Yep but then with two games a week, and wanting to keep the injuries to a minimum, I guess just like the team Rafa is looking for balance, an equilibrium of players ready for a tough season.

He did say something about picking the team most suited to the opposition, I think Colback would have been well suited to this game myself.

I’d take Diame off for Mitro and let Gayle play off him he’s everywhere just on his own alot Diame is too far behind. Mitro will win alot in the air.

Hopefully Gestede doesn’t come on with Sels the No1 flapper in goal Gestede will score a header. Darlow should be first choice.

Comfortably bossing the game at half time. To be honest, they look pretty clueless apart from the early break when they were a mere two yards offside! Gayle needs to do better with one on one chances, coz you don’t get many. Arma would’ve buried it. 😉 Stiol, all in all a half we can be satisfied with. Bear in mind that when we’ve scored first we’ve won this season. Let’s keep that run going.

  • 128 JP...from The Rock // Sep 24, 2016 at 6:24 PM

We’re being very wasteful infront of goal. We should be two up at least. Villa are here for the taking.

  • 129 firebug666 // Sep 24, 2016 at 6:26 PM

    Jail

    Thanks Marra.

We are dominating a poor villa team, and as has been said should be 0-3 up now. Hope Rafa boots a boot up the backside. Gayle much as I like him has looked lightweight, and missing that 1 on 1 was just poor, no very poor.

  • 130 Jib // Sep 24, 2016 at 6:26 PM

Rafa normally dosn’t do halftime subs

However a couple of Toon players looked to have niggles going off for the break.

    Gayle has taken some punishment.

You know this could be Perez redemption time !

Diame seemed to improve towards the end of the halve, but we have missed some sitters, think Dummett and Gouffron are having good games.

We just have to continue playing the way we are and more goals will come..

They are starting to commit fouls so could easily end up with only ten men on pitch.

Diame is mystifying. Bruce somehow got him to be consistent, so far here it’s fair to say he hasn’t performed to the standard he can.

Don’t expect any changes as we’re in control.

Yedlin and Clark the stand out players for me so far.

  • 264 sparky55 // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:28 PM

That was down to bad management…Rafa should have done something to put more pressure on them rather than sit back…they were there for the taking

  • 265 mindshaft // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:28 PM

Has to go down as a terrible result when we were so much on top, Diames miss seems to give Villa hope and we started sitting deeper and deeper, stupid decision from Mitro to try to play fancy football but Sels is the worst keeper in the division on crosses – absolutely terrible

  • 266 Oleg G // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:29 PM

Well. 4 points from the 1st isn’t bad, but this game should’ve been ours long long time ago.

    Sell Sels. 🙂

We looked s**te lads, but cheer up, at least we didn’t lose and we are still with 16 points.
    We will be ok.

  • 267 Mister Tuff // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:29 PM

No cutting edge up front – 2 points dropped.
Not the way to win this league.
Against a better side we would have lost.
Too much tippy tappy – go nowhere football.
We’ll rue the day of not having better forwards.

  • 268 ShirebrookToon // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:29 PM

It’s a point which so should have been 3

  • 269 catchy in norway // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:29 PM

    tale of 2 half’s that.

Tiote was not up to speed, and he should not have came on IMO, we totally lost control of MF after that

mind you we should have been at least 3 up by that point.

    the team blew it today

  • 270 JP...from The Rock // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:29 PM

For all you Mitro lovers he was at fault for the lead up to the goal. His stupid flick there put us under the pressure in which they won a corner and scored. Really stupid by Mitro and cost us the game and two extra points!

  • 271 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:30 PM

    lukes26

Correct. I have no idea. I think Rafa was the best move we did. I am starting to doubt his tactical awareness as of today.

Anyway, in football you miss chances you are usually on a receiving end. So fair result.

Poor for us. Rafa need stop freshen up his substitutes.

  • 272 NoahJ // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:30 PM

Sels is so poor. he’s had nothing to do all game apart from defend 4 or 5 corners, and he commanded none of them, and was at fault for the goal.

darlow has to start against norwich

  • 273 clinath@ed // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:31 PM

How the flop did we not win that game. Totally fell apart for the last 20 minutes.
Agree about that Sels…..what a heap of shite…
Mitrovic offered nothing when he come on.
Shelvey dominated till his booking then disappeared…

    I’m fuming….

  • 274 Mag52 // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:31 PM

    Wake up call for Rafa.
Too many under performing. We should have taken 3 points there.

  • 275 JamesToon // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:31 PM

2 points dropped there. We absolutely battered them for the first 60 mins, we should have been at least 3-0 up, they only got back into it when Gestede came on.

This is what happens when you don’t take your chances, but looking at the game overall, it will paper over cracks for villa. We deserved to win today.

Clark was absolutely fantastic. Tiote is a liability, Yedlin was decent, Shelvey was very good, generally can’t really fault anyone other than Diame and Gayle who should have both scored.

  • 276 Oleg G // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:31 PM

NEXT GAME IS A MUST WIN.
Norwich at home in 5 days.

  • 277 Ron Knee // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:31 PM

Blame Rafa. He missed all those chances!

  • 278 colwell // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:31 PM

That was all Rafas fault. His stupid fcuking tactics don’t change even when on the back foot.

Why put fcuking Tiote on Hanley was on the bench and would have dealt with balls in the box much better.

Midweek Murphy played well and freed Diame up who played his best game for us, today plays Gayle up top ffs

  • 279 Laurent Robert 32 // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:31 PM

Gayle and Diame’s chances were glaring. Both should have been wrapped up.

  • 280 Belfast // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:32 PM

The game turned when the useless Diame missed that chance in the second half and the keeper handed them the point basically.

  • 281 clinath@ed // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:32 PM

Jp…that flick? What on earth was he thinking there?
That Villa side would struggle in a pub league, and we made them look…….average!

  • 282 lukes26 // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:32 PM

ive been wrong about him before, but looks like tiote is past it

  • 283 Blackley and Brownlie // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:32 PM

Mitro lumbered around and was sloppy in lead up to their goal.
Diame was shite. What was he doing? Should’ve scored.
Great game from Yedlin. Missed him.

  • 284 WWSBRD // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:32 PM

I think Ed should have a commenting ban for an hour or two after every non win haha let everyone calm down and think about things then let them back on

  • 285 Bambams // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:32 PM

Just prior to his miss I thought Diame has not done much for me since he signed.

I know Dummet is a local lad and I am not saying he is a bad player but I would like to see Lazaar in that role. Dummet does not look comfortable on the ball in my opinion.

Finally the goal came from a mistake by Mitro in our build up. …He tried to flick the ball rather than hold and release.

We all know we are capable of this. ….

Sels still worries me, reminds me of Pav when he first signed.

    Definitely two points dropped.

Rafa doesn’t rate Mitro again in my opinion. I just don’t think he fits with how Rafa wants to play.

Have a good evening watching MOTD with the demise of Sunderland. …..

  • 286 SPRINGY // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:33 PM

Missed chances 1st half, sloppy and unadventurous second…..diame was knackered after 65-70 mins and needed fresh legs on earlier.

  • 287 RUNAWAY777 // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:34 PM

Rafa time to drop this keep even so u f9und him he 8s utter and when he comes for the ball he drops it to the ground before he holds it get rid now darlow much safer pair of hands

  • 288 GeordieTwo // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:34 PM

Still lots of work to be done with this squad. Rafa needs to settle on a proper starting 11 and then have 3 or 4 players he trusts in reserve. We’ll need to improve dramatically against Norwich to stand a chance.

  • 289 ilovetoon8788 // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:34 PM

This game is rafa fault. Diame should have been removed at half time. He was playing terribly and offered nothing for Gayle. There was no partnership or anything between our front 2.

Villa had so many chances and could have buried us as well. Gutted.

  • 290 colwell // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:34 PM

Yedlin our best player by a mile.

  • 291 Spotlight Kid // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:34 PM

Sels doesn’t dominate the area, neither is he an instinctive shot stopper and his positional sense is woeful. Get KD between those sticks. We’ve had some good keepers at St James’ over the yearsm how the hell do we end up with Sels as first choice.

And ‘Two-Touch’ Shelvey is certainly not the sort of player you need in the side when the going gets tough. Two points thrown away.

  • 292 stuart no9 // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:34 PM

A new centre forward and a new keeper in goal and we will be fine , if we dont buy one and play sells in every game we wont win this league. its as simple as that . shocking goal keeping and shocking finishing. 2 points thrown away

  • 293 GeordieTwo // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:35 PM

All in all Mitrovic has been a disaster this season compared to what I thought he would be. I would drop him altogether until he shows something in training or playing with the reserves. We have a real problem there. He hasn’t worked out. Gayle can still get us goals. And Perez may have some role to play athough not a major one.

  • 294 colwell // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:35 PM

    Hurry back Elliot

  • 295 Bri // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:35 PM

    Thought Yedlin was best player.
And i would also like to add that this team wouldn’t survive in the Premier.

  • 296 Average_Contents // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:36 PM

I’m suprised at how knackered we looked after 60mins tbh.

Thought rafa might of made a couple of subs shortly after to try and give us some fresh legs but they happened too late imo and by the time we did villa had the impetus and wind in their sails.

At least we didn’t lose and I said beforehand it’d be tough game, a 1-1 or sneaky 0-1.

Not just singling him out but thought sels was poor again today.

Doesn’t command his box, very hesitant, won’t catch the ball and looks shaky everytime he has it.

  • 297 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:36 PM

    Was Colback injured ?

We really could have done with him to come on instead of Tiote hopefully Yedlin is not too bad or we might need to bring back Sterry!!

Ciaran Clark was immense today deserved the win and if our finishing was better that would have been an easy win!

Norwich game is massive next week

  • 298 toon kk // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:37 PM

  • 300 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:37 PM

As soon as you have must win games….things start to go sour for us. Wednesday is a must win, but it seems as if we will never learn.

Rafa is not doing it for me once we are on the back foot. I am not sure why that is so but it is. Def need a deadly striker up front. Spend real big come Jan.

For me subs should read like this:

Diame OFF second half, Gayle OFF second half, Shelvey OFF with 15 min to go he was spent.

Atsu, Perez and Mitro on second half. Bring us up to speed. Instead a Pardew-eque sub in Slow un fit Tiote.

  • 302 GeordieTwo // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:38 PM

Can’t afford to drop points like that the way Norwich is playing. The next match is crucial now. If we lose to Norwich we’ll be 7 points back of them.

  • 303 JP...from The Rock // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:38 PM

Gayle played well tbf. A bit unlucky with the 1v1. Sels is terrible, should be fourth choice not first! Yedlin impressed hope he’s okay. Shelvey tried and was controlling the midfield with Hayden for 60mins. Ritchie class act again, never stopped working and always looked dangerous.Diame not good enough. Reminded me too much of Sissoko on his usual ‘I don’t give a toss’ days.

  • 304 colwell // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:38 PM

Gayle can not lead the line he works hard but can’t hold the ball up why did we buy Murphy too have 2 target men and never play either?

Sorry but that’s deluded mate. Poor finishing cost us the win, yes I think we sat back too much after Diame’s chance which is Rafa’s fault, but not his fault for poor finishing, we had so many more chances than them in the first 60 to score, we could have routed them today. This draw will paper over the cracks for villa and only make us learn from our mistakes, improve areas such as our finishing and game management

  • 307 manxpie // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:41 PM

why are people blaming sels he’s not 10 ft and that is the only way he would get that ball
it was a great ball in the box

  • 308 Lindisfarne // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:42 PM

The lack of scoring for ourselves killed us. Gayle was unlucky but Diame was wasteful. Other efforts from the rest of the squad were taken with little thought, resulting in a lack of shots actually testing the goalie and ultimately scoring a goal. Mitro and Tiote were on a hiding to nothing when they came on.

  • 309 Mag52 // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:44 PM

The big question for the Norwich match will be has Rafa realized that the goalie he picked out and signed, and has been his first choice since day one is, in fact, inferior to young Darlow at the moment, and should be dropped for this vital top of the table match ?

  • 310 lukes26 // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:44 PM

point away is not a horrible result.

im sure he had his reasoning……but i dont know what rafa was thinking with his subs…i would have brought on atsu and hanley & left gayle in the game

didnt feel like we got outplayed in the second half, AV just had more athleticism on the pitch

  • 311 Thump // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:44 PM

@manxpie: The ball was hit down and to his left. He should have done a lot better with it. Likewise, Goofy should have done a lot more given he was goal side.

Sels flaps at everything, prefers to punch rather than catch, and very rarely comes for crosses. I’m sure he’s a good keeper, but he’s far from the finished product.

  • 312 Bobbybee // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:44 PM

Wow, let’s keep some perspective. It’s not like we’ve lost. Yes, we should’ve won and been out of sight before their comeback, but when ye don’t take your chances it costs you in any league. They were the home side after all and there was always going to be a period when they were dominant. Too many Thinking we have some sort of divine right to win every game we play, but in the cold light of day, despite it being disappointing, it’s an away point that brings us a point closer to the leaders. Three points on Wednesday night will put us right in the mix. Yes, we should’ve won, but it’s not the encd of the world.

  • 313 Lindisfarne // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:44 PM

    G2

He only got about 10mins if that and came on at a point in the game when villa were battering us.

We started launching the ball in his general direction but not close enough.

Total opposite to what villa done once gestede came on, they actually crossed into the box for their big man.

Mitro fed off scraps, much like gayle did. Even gayle’s one on one was a fcukup on their part.

Fair do’s, the flick was stupid but we had plenty of time to recover after that.

We had warning after warning beforehand and paid the price.

I have sympathy Sels because people cry out for him to come for the ball, but he didn’t get the flight of the ball and end up going in a circle. If there had a been a player on the rear post they would have stopped it, as it clipped the post prior to going in. In hindsight Sels should have stayed on his line but those are the breaks, particularly when the midfield disappears.

  • 324 clinath@ed // Sep 24, 2016 at 7:53 PM
