Unbelievable Newcastle Come From 3-1 Down – Win 4-3

9:57 pm, Wednesday, September 28th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 53 Comments

Well we just don’t believe this – after Newcastle were 3-1 down to Norwich City after 69 minutes we came back with three goals in the last 20 minutes to win this game and there were two goals late in stoppage time and we somehow won this game 4-3.

It would have been a stunner to lose to Norwich, because we would have gone 7 points behind them, but maybe the Gods are on our side after all.

Gayle got his second goal of the game after 71 minutes and then Gouffran scored 5 minutes into injury time.

Dwight Gayle of Newcastle United (left) celebrates scoring their fourth goal during the Sky Bet Championship match between Newcastle United and Norwich City played at St. James' Park, Newcastle on 28th September 2016

Dwight Gayle after scoring winner six minutes into stoppage time

And yes – you guessed it – Dwight Gayle got his hat trick one minute later and gave Newcastle all 3 points – which is exactly what we needed.

Who said he should have been dropped then?

Well me actually.

But Dwight now has 7 goals for Newcastle this season.

Only Newcastle can mount a magnificent late comeback like this and the Newcastle fans will be going crazy tonight back home.

Did I say it was unbelievable?

We’ll have a report out later – once we re cover – but we are now 3rd top one point behind Norwich and 3 points behind Huddersfield.

Note to Rafa – this is not exactly good for the old heart.

We’ve got to stop eating our own mates. The middle of a match isn’t the time to decide you hate the club and how it’s run. Fess up those who do it fairly often on here.

Great result! Even better feeling given how late it was when we turned it around. From listening to the radio, it didn’t sound like we deserved to lose, I wish we wouldn’t leave it so late, or make it so difficult for the fans.

A tactical question, in amongst the euphoria, did we go 442 when Mitro replaced Diame, or did Gayle drop into the hole?

  • 5 Lindisfarne // Sep 28, 2016 at 9:59 PM

    Last two goals

  • 8 SPRINGY // Sep 28, 2016 at 9:59 PM

great result, patchy performance….but winning in the last minute may give them players a right good kick up arse when it comes to confidence.

  • 9 Bambams // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:00 PM

    Unbelievable! !!!!

Took the dogs out at 2-3 when I ‘thought’ I had seen the final score in the top corner of the tv !

Mate text me ‘What a match 4-3’ …..I thought he was taking what the dogs were doing !!

Massive game and huge 3 points !

  • 10 GeordieTwo // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:01 PM

Enjoy the evening after that one!

  • 11 BandB // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:03 PM

Those were two very good goals. Not a hint of scramble about either, even if there was a bit of justifiable overloading going on.

  • 12 mindshaft // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:03 PM

absolutely elated – was on a work thing which was in a place with no 3g – norwich mate was updating me … fair play to him he expected us to score again at 1-3 and texted me every goal pretty much as it happened
Can’t wait for highlights – players will be going into Saturdays game full of it … nothing better than turning a result round in injury time especially to score 2 goals … absolutely mint man

    GeordieTwo @3
Imagine having a season ticket, surrounded by a few of them listening to that patter every game. Enough to drive you round the bend.

Does anyone agree that As much as Rafa is brilliant he thinks too much about the tactics and opposition at this level.
We are a much better side than anyone in this league just let them go out and destroy teams.
After going 1-0 up we seem to sit back. We should be killing teams off.
Good result in the though lads. Onwards and upwards.

  • 15 G // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:04 PM

Excellent result, we were peppering their goalmouth all night. They only had 5 or 6 shots on goal and ended up with 3 of them going in. We had at least 20. On another day we could have won that one 10 nil. Crazy night, and I would have felt robbed if we had lost.

When you do something you have failed miserably to do for many years, then it is at least a precedent you can build on, and a massive monkey off your back.

  • 21 chicousa // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:10 PM

Mitro almost snapped Gayle into pieces celebrating the winning goal!!! you gotta love that big Serb’s spirit!!!

  • 22 lesh // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:10 PM

Ed took a while to post this thread having had to bin the draft he had ready!

He’ll not be complaining though, that’s for sure.

Rafa does need to change his formation, going with 2 up top and more importantly ha ingredients bodies in the box is what caused the damage.

Play them both ffs and attack teams and keep attacking, not score 1 and then hold on to it

  • 27 Moonraker15 // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:16 PM

This was the night the Lads became men and learnt how to win when they need to ! Fantastic result! Well done lads! Please no criticism lads let’s enjoy it!

Anyone have a video of Mitrovic bear hugging Rafa in the centre circle? 😀

  • 29 PK-Norway // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:17 PM

Can someone please post the highlights so people like me from Norway can see

  • 30 BandB // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:17 PM

It might not have been good for the old heart Ed, but you learn by experience, and none of our players have experienced that as a group.

My guess is that stocks in Colbacks have taken a setback, despite his lack of match fitness.

I too am waiting for an opinion on whether Gayle did drop just off Mitrovic.

Well that was an easy straight forward win, was the result ever in doubt, whey no man, never……………………………well ?

  • 33 Munster Mag // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:20 PM

Rafa wont go 442. he says he alters to this and 433 but its too much 4231 as many of us predicted. Brlliant win but as I said yesterday , we need to get after team more and stop being so cautious and obsessed with defensive shape. I rate Gayle and have money on him to be top scorer in league 🙂 Not as much as Jail though, sod him! 🙂

    What a game
    What a strange game

The atmosphere at 3-3 and when the winner went in will always stay with me.

There’ll be a video on YouTube – eventually!

  • 42 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:27 PM

Great if they were good well taken goals, I’m about to watch now. Gayle’s sounded scrappy on the radio, so not entirely sure if there is an element of sarcasm in your post.

They all count the same though, so 3-2 down, 5 minutes into stoppage time, I’d take any type of goal. Scrappy, individual, team, beach ball…… We needed to not lose today, and we have done better than that. A win would have been a very good result, to do it in the manner we did makes it feel far better!

To all, did we go 442 when Mitro came on? Or did Gayle drop? Asked before, but I’m assuming that people aren’t sure, so hopefully a match goer will be on soon to assist!

  • 43 sing in the corner // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:27 PM

    Very doubtful.

    Mitro lift on Rafa

  • 46 WWSBRD // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:29 PM

Haha I cant bring myself to look, I imagine it was the usual suspects with the usual over reaction, funny old thing football isnt it

  • 47 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:29 PM

    Our Toon,
I agree that we need to be more attacking. I like 4231 a lot, but given the fact that on paper our squad and manager are better than most, being a bit more offensive – whilst maintaining defensive shape – particularly at home should be something Rafa is considering.

  • 48 sing in the corner // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:29 PM

Haha Bobbybee won’t be needing any pain killers coming back from the game this evening! Huge endorphin rush should have sorted that out..

  • 49 BandB // Sep 28, 2016 at 10:30 PM

When many of our antecedents were struggling to get match highlights back in the day, they took the eminently sensible step of getting the longboats out and moving somewhere they could.

Both were good goals, and Gayle had a bit to do when he got the ball.

Just saw shelveys closing down for the Jerome goal pathetic effort. If a team like stoke cnt win a game in the pl then this team will really struggle if promoted.
