Anita, Atsu, Diame and Gayle All Start At Rotherham

Rotherham_United_FC.svgnufc-emblem

Rafa Benitez has just named his team for the game at Rotherham United today and he has recalled Anita at right back in place of American DeAndre Yedlin and Dwight Gayle keeps his place in the side after his hat-trick on Wednesday night – it looks like there are only two changes.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Karl Darlow; Vurnon Anita, Jamaal Lascelles (c), Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett; Jonjo Shelvey, Jack Colback; Christian Atsu, Mo Diame, Yoan Gouffran; Dwight Gayle
Substitutes: Matz Sels, DeAndre Yedlin, Chancel Mbemba, Grant Hanley, Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Christian Atsu gets his chance with star player Mat Ritchie taking a rest on the bench for this game.

This is what Rafa has told his players because this game is potentially a banana skin if we don’t concentrate and think it’s going to be an easy win:

“I told our players about what people were saying after the Queens Park Rangers game when we played Wolves.”

“People said we had to win the next one easily.”  “So that’s a good experience from recently for us.”  We don’t underestimate our rivals.”

“We have watched clips and videos, this is a good team with good strikers. They are making some mistakes but they still aren’t a bad team.”

“With their fans behind them they can be dangerous. So we have to makes sure we go there and are prepared for a tough game.”

Nine fans in ten think we will win this game so if we don’t it will be a massive let-down.

    From the BBC live text:

”By the way Georginio Wijnaldum is playing is this match.

Liverpool’s summer signing seems to have barely had a touch on the ball.”

Gini up to his old (disappearing) tricks again.

StreamHD works good in Zemtv as well.

  • 5 JDdubai // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:10 PM

    Like Atsu playing.
Worried that our Yedlin/Ritchie partnership is gone
diame needs a break, been poor last few games
Would prefer Mitro for diame, have Gayle buzzing around him and dropping into the hole when we lose possession.
Dont think we need 2 CBs on the bench -would prefer Perez there.

  • 6 JDdubai // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:12 PM

Sorry that seems more negative than was meant…

  • 7 Ron Knee // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:15 PM

    JD

I thought Diamé would have been ‘rotated’ too. And Perez didn’t even make the bench.

  • 8 Small World // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:20 PM

Rafa reads the #RafaBingo entries sees few if any have gone for Anita or Diame and thinks “hmmmm… I know what I’m going to do”

  • 9 The next Mike Williamson // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:21 PM

Diame deserves to be rested, but I think he’ll come good today. And besides there isn’t any other attacking midefielders in our squad. I’m a bit surprised to see DeYedlin dropped. Colback and Dummet need to show something today.

  • 10 firebug666 // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:24 PM

Well we have a hell of a bench to change things if needed.

Looking forward to seeing Atsu start see what he can produce.

  • 11 SUTTY1978 // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:24 PM

You would think he would give Perez & Mitro another shot together. Looks like a negative team selection, Colback, Anita, Diame are all the defensive selections in their positions, had hoped Rafa would let them loose today but seems to be going even safer against the worst team in the league.
Bench selections are also odd, only two remotely attacking subs, you would think either Perez or Smurphy would be on there.
We will probably score six now….

  • 12 BandB // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:26 PM

I thought Anita would start. He’s one of Rafa’s key players.
My only wonder was whether he would move him alongside Shelvey ( as neither Colback nor Hayden have staked a firm claim to that spot yet) to allow Yedlin to continue. But it was always more likely that Anita would just replace Yedlin in a straight swap.
I see Darlow got a game after all…………….
Atsu will get game time or Chelsea will have him back.

  • 13 Charlietoon // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:29 PM

Gone a bit defensive to reinforce the message they missed at wolves. Watch for some attacking substitutions

  • 14 firebug666 // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:30 PM

Maybe Darlow is still starting as Sels may not be ready to return after the abuse he got on twitter. He will need to get his head right and concentrate on getting his confidence back.

  • 15 expatmag // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:31 PM

    Strange team.

Probably a good time to rest Ritchie especially with the international break coming up.

Diame must perform today….no second chances now

  • 16 firebug666 // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:34 PM

    expat

Agree on Diame, he was the weak link in the team last time out, today he will need to be the king pin in midfield, or dropped, he should have been dropped after his woeful display last time imo.

  • 17 BandB // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:34 PM

Sels, Anita, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, Colback, Gouffran, Diame, Gayle.

That’s the core first 11 Rafa is revolving around.

  • 18 NUFCPaul // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:35 PM

Wonder if the local village idiot will accuse me of not being a real football supporter if I mention McClaren in his pundit role again this week? Wouldn’t put it past the sly little worm.

  • 24 BandB // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:46 PM

Diame isn’t a natural in that role, but the alternative is Perez, who has looked lighweight, makes disappointing distribution decisions and runs into brick walls. He suits Mitrovic leading the line rather than Gayle.
Shelvey needs too much time to play there, as his first touch has been the weakest part of his game.

    Where’s Perez in all this?
At QPR some said he was bulked up and stronger, yet he’s still thought of as lightweight ?
Is he injured or just in the gym doing weights ?
    Rafa’s not commented on him I don’t think …or have I missed something ?

  • 31 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Oct 1, 2016 at 2:57 PM

Anyone seen Moyes’ Sunderland line up for today? 4 CBs (2 in midfield) with all 3 CMs being defensive! I’m actually a bit shocked at how negative that is!

Perez plays badly once out of position on the LW and gets dropped. Diame plays badly 3 or 4 in a row in his proper position and still gets a start.

Hope he turns it on today, if nothing else be a bit more lively.

Given the manager and players we have, I suspect that nine fans in 10 would expect us to beat Rotherham.

Diame looks very disinterested again we put so many crosses into the box surely it makes sense for Mitro to be in there?

Mitro for Diame. Very disappointing from the latter.

Love Atsu already. Ritchie or him? Maybe move Atsu into the centre behind the striker? Or Ritchie there and Atsu on the right? He’s too good for our bench.

  • 101 Jammydodger // Oct 1, 2016 at 3:54 PM

Keeps playing like that and he’ll cost us a few bob!
Squad depth must be the best in the championship, these players coming into the starting line up chomping at the bit is excellent.
Hope Shelvey gets a bit more space and time in 2nd half to express himself

  • 106 JDdubai // Oct 1, 2016 at 3:57 PM

If we remove the Rafa goggles, we have been really poor today. Remember where Rotherham are in the league, and we are so defensive.

Definitely not a fan of this rotation every match tactic, if someone is knackered then fine. It every week?

Anita shouldn’t be RB ahead of Yedlin.
Diame shouldn’t be starting, Mitro needs game time or he will never get match fit
Haven’t seen a drop in ritchie’s performance so don’t think he needs rotating just yet

Not meaning to be a misery, great we are winning obvs but it’s Rotherham ffs, we should be camped in their half having numerous chances, this has been 50-50.

    I’ll shut up now.

  • 107 manxpie // Oct 1, 2016 at 3:58 PM

  • 108 Spotlight Kid // Oct 1, 2016 at 3:58 PM

I’m delighted Rafa stuck with Darlow, he had a very impressive first half. Catching, shot-stopping and distribution all top drawer. His confidence with the ball at his feet is very reassuring (unlike Krull). Keep it up, lad, and the jersey’s yours.

  • 109 LGFUAD21 // Oct 1, 2016 at 3:58 PM

    Get Diame off.

He’s half hearted with every thing. Shelvey is doing his job and his own.

We’d be winning by a mile of we had someone in the hole doing a job.

Poor performance but it’s cos the team has no outlets.

rafa is rotating a lot but still some players undeservedly remain in the line-up (diame, colback, dummett) while others get no chance (lazaar, mitrovic)

  • 117 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:03 PM

Agree Darlow deserves credit. A very solid and reassuring first half. Very comfortable.

  • 118 Markaccus // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:03 PM

Ritchie was well overdue a rest. If Atsu has a good game, then it gives Rafa a nice selection headache. It also means he won’t have to worry if either of the two form wide players need a rest, as he can just put Atsu on.

  • 119 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:03 PM

Also Dummett had a woeful first half.

  • 120 Jail for Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:04 PM

    JDdubai,
If you weren’t so keen to slate the team and their efforts you might take in to account that Rotherham ave played out of their skins and are treating this game like a one off cup final, according to Ando and Lowes their confidence disappeared when they conceded and look more like their level now.

  • 121 nufcursed // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:04 PM

perez ain’t even on the bench!

  • 122 mindshaft // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:04 PM

Agree about Diame, would rather see Mitro playing that role at the minute

  • 123 Jammydodger // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:05 PM

Whats with the Dummet hate?! Admittedly not the greatest passer or going forward but as a defensive LB, solid . . . ish the majority of attacks whihc mature into a threat are down the oppositions left. If Lazaar or Gamez were any better then they would be the starting LB but they are not,

  • 124 Uncertain Toon // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:05 PM

I think we’ve done well thus far, steady eddy away from home, soaked up all they’ve chucked at us, patient build up with a well executed goal.
    Made all the possession count.
Now lets up the tempo and put this to bed.

  • 125 manxpie // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:08 PM

    Started this half well.

  • 131 Jail for Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:12 PM

My flight is due at half four, won’t know the score till I get off, so hurry up and get another one!!!

  • 132 Jail for Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:13 PM

Ritchie coming on, two fast tricky wingers, get Mitro on for Diame with him.

  • 133 NUFCPaul // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:15 PM

Great effort by Atsu. On target and forcing a save. Nice ball through from Diame too. Atsu letting Rafa know that he’s not just a substitute option from now on.

  • 134 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:15 PM

Shelvey made a few iffy decisons so far 2nd half. Needs to switch back on before he makes a costly one.

  • 135 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:16 PM

Diame should be subbed. Done nothing all match.

  • 136 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:16 PM

Think Colback is just as good at buying fouls as he is committing them, it’s his his best asset 😆

  • 137 ilovetoon8788 // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:17 PM

    Diame needs to be dropped.

  • 138 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:18 PM

Darlow’s kicking has been shite. Don’t know what those praising that part of his game 1st half were watching. Being good in all other respects.

  • 139 Uncertain Toon // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:19 PM

    Hail – haha!
Spot on though, Colback is as proficient at hitting the deck as he is putting people on the deck!

  • 140 ilovetoon8788 // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:20 PM

We look sloppy. A very scrappy game.

  • 141 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:20 PM

Our passing has been awful in this game. We gotta get our act together ffs.

  • 142 Mister Tuff // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:20 PM

Need another goal here – the way it is going they could equalise.
Another goal would finish them off -open floodgates.

  • 143 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:22 PM

I’d bring Murphey or Mitro on to hold the ball up top.

  • 144 ilovetoon8788 // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:23 PM

Shelvey needs to be subbed off as well.

  • 145 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:24 PM

Odd half. Diame outshining Gayle and Colback much better than Shelvey who seems to be sleeping.

Diame unlucky there, grown into this.

  • 146 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:25 PM

Atsu off? Must not be fully match fit.

  • 147 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:25 PM

Odd to sub Atsu off. Maybe always the plan to give him a little over an hour, regardless.

  • 148 lukes26 // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:25 PM

rotherhams back four are poor..we really should be making more chances

  • 149 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:27 PM

  • 150 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:27 PM

Totally commanding now, but need to get another. Always likely they’ll have another desperate spell.

  • 151 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:29 PM

Shelvey wants to be involved in everything but has been poor and wasteful.

  • 152 NUFCPaul // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:29 PM

Nice clean strike from Shelvey there. Making the keeper work. More of that please lads!

  • 153 Jail for Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:32 PM

Ha ha, Dexter Blackstock, I had him when I was Scarborough manager eleven years ago, I hope he doesn’t come back to haunt me, I sold him when we got to the PL.

  • 154 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:33 PM

    Gouff done well today.

  • 155 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:35 PM

He could even have scored another had it not been for the goal line clearence.

  • 156 NUFCPaul // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:36 PM

Good corner there from Shelvey, although that should be the norm. Quality corners seem to be a rarity right across the leagues these past few years. Do players just not practice them anymore?

    Here comes Mitro!

  • 157 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:36 PM

I love how Gayle never tires of running and keeps putting pressure on their defenders. Great effor by him as always.

  • 158 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:36 PM

Since the first 25 there’s been only one team in it, hopefully no sucker punch.

  • 159 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:37 PM

Can see why, Diame has looked more sprightly this half and been involved a lot more. Gayle had a quiet one.

    Howay Mitro.

  • 160 colwell // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:38 PM

Gayle had nothing to feed on today worked his ass off too.

  • 161 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:38 PM

Wtf is Shelvey playing at!? Seriously. Take him off Rafa. Good aub with Mitro on now.

  • 162 NUFCPaul // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:39 PM

Immediate impact from Mitro. He’ll give their defense something to think about for these last ten minutes.

  • 163 BandB // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:40 PM

Mitrovic for Gayle is the obvious sub.
It’s all about making the outlet ball stick. A counter-attacking move.

  • 164 lukes26 // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:41 PM

yeah, i dont know what shelvey’s doing today.

diame’s actually been much better in the second half

  • 165 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:41 PM

  • 170 Spotlight Kid // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:44 PM

JP, Shelvey is our most dangerous player, he could have three assists in the second half alone if Clark, Gayle and A.N.Other (I forget who) had been more alert. Instead they’re hanging on yet again…

  • 171 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:44 PM

Keep hold of the ball and slow the game down ffs!!

  • 172 NUFCPaul // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:45 PM

  • 174 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:45 PM

  • 189 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:55 PM

    Job done!

Aside from Gouffran hammering it against our post, never looked troubled despite the numerous corners they had.

Can see why they’re bottom, we scored and pretty much all fight left them.

  • 190 NUFCPaul // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:55 PM

  • 191 JP...from The Rock // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:55 PM

Where does that put us in the league then lads?

  • 192 BandB // Oct 1, 2016 at 4:58 PM

Rafa said he intended to bring Hanley on and make it three CB’s in the Villa game, so it was no surprise today.
He’s a percentages man, and anyone expecting him to play expansive attacking football down to the whistle is a chump.
He’ll be happy with Diame’s performance.
That was a banana skin game for us. We didn’t slip. Small steps. We aren’t a superteam.
    Sheesh!
Another defeat like that and it’s “relegation here we come”, eh?

  • 204 Spoof // Oct 1, 2016 at 5:06 PM

Not spectacular but a win is a win, I thought we played better against Villa where we ended up hanging on, and better against Norwich where we could so easily have lost, but these drab 0-1 wins is what is needed to get promoted, and I must say that it is far easier on the heart rate and it does help with the blood pressure as well, a few more of these drab 0-1’s will do me nicely, very nicely indeed.

  • 205 Jib // Oct 1, 2016 at 5:07 PM

    I enjoyed that.
Rotherham very much in the Alan Stubbs mould lots of petty stuff after the ball has been passed – nasty niggly side – the lads stood up to be counted.

  • 211 BandB // Oct 1, 2016 at 5:17 PM

I grew up surrounded by Flashman books.
Rafa has one of those Victorian colonial campaigns on his hands.
He’s been given 3,000 regulars and told to go and conquer Abyssinia “and not cost a fortune doing it!”
It means conserving his forces and not making any mistakes.
This will be a slog with messy progress that annoys a public sat on their arses wanting to read about glorious victories.
But the book will show we conquered Abyssinia.
(With apologies to the sensibilities of any Abyssinian readers.)

  • 212 NUFCPaul // Oct 1, 2016 at 5:17 PM

Don’t know where your coming from with Dummett, the back five looked solid throughout, The Gouff hitting his own post was the only danger and Dummett as with Anita just allowed the wingers to take us forward, neither full back got forward that much which was probably a tactic when just one goal in front, but neither FB gave the ball away so where the criticism comes from is a puzzle, by the way, I cannot abide Anita but like Dummett he done exactly what was asked of him so I cannot find any reason to criticize either of them as they both made sure that we had no threat from the wide areas.
