24 year-old Christian Atsu made his first start for Newcastle yesterday at Rotherham United and he ended up being Newcastle’s hero with a simply superb goal after 41 minutes.
And then in the second half he almost scored another great goal as he ran at the Millers’ defense but this time the Rotherham goalkeeper Lee Camp made a terrific save at full stretch to his right as he tipped the ball around the post for a corner.
Christian Atsu – fist in air after scoring
It was his first goal for the club but on this performance Atsu will start to get a lot more playing time at Newcastle.
Think what it could be like with Matt Richie on one wing and Christian on the other – speed and skill on both wings and that would prove a real threat to opposing defenses.
Rafa Benitez has explained that he did a lot of research on the player before he was signed on loan for the season from Chelsea:
“We did a lot of research to bring him here.” “My information from Spain was really good and positive.”
“I also spoke to people at Chelsea and they said he was a nice lad.” “From what I have seen he is a good professional and he works hard.”
“It’s always important to win whether it’s before or after an international break.
“To perform like this and in the week against Norwich is massive for us. It is big for the confidence for the team.”
“Now the players can go away and enjoy with their families.”
This is the type of win we must grind out (it wasn’t pretty) if we are to be promoted and hopefully as Rafa and the players get more experience in the Championship, we will keep constantly improving as the season progresses.
That’s the hope – bottom line – Atsu was just great for us yesterday and is currently leading our Man of the Match poll.
Here’s the video of Atsu’s goal.
