Jonjo Shelvey has started to become a really good play-maker for Newcastle and he’s starting to attain the form we all know he’s capable of.
And in 10 appearances in the Championship this season he has three goals and two assists so the former Liverpool midfielder is really contributing to the side.
Jonjo is also becoming more consistent and his inconsistency has been a problem with his game in the past, but there’s no doubt that when he;s on his game he’s a really classy player who is now working very hard for the side.
Rafa Benitez with Jonjo Shelvey
And he’s a player who made it very clear at the end of last season that he had no intention at all of leaving the club after we had been relegated.
This is what Jonjo has said today:
“I’ve not thought about leaving once.” “I wanted to stay at this football club – I only signed in January!”
“I’m settled here. I’ve got my family here and things like that. It’s a great city to live in and a great football club to play for.”
“It was tough not playing at the back end of last year.”
“I’m the sort of person that normally gets the hump if he’s not playing, but I think that’s natural as a footballer.”
“You want to play every game. At the end of the day I went away in the summer and worked on my body and my mind.”
“I want to stay here and play for this club.”
Those are good words there from Jonjo Shelvey and he certainly has been playing well and consistently well over the last several games.
Jonjo had another good game at Rotherham on Saturday and one thing we noticed in the second half is when he lost the ball once when he had possession.
But then he came dashing back to rob the Rotherham player to regain possession for us and then started off another attack – it looked great.
We’re not exactly sure what Rafa tells the players in training or how he says it, but he has 11 committed players out there representing Newcastle whenever you see us play these days – it warms the heart.
We had a lot to lose at Rotherham, but it was a good performance from the lads and a great 3 points.
If we can keep fighting like that at home and away this season then success should be ours next May and we should be able to get back to the Premier League.
That’s the hope anyway.
