Benitez On Why He Wants More Goalscorers In The Side

1:16 pm, Saturday, October 8th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 6 Comments

Newcastle have had 12 players score a goal in all competitions this season, with Dwight Gayle leading the way with 7 goals.

And it seems that for good reason, manager Rafa Benitez is hoping that Newcastle can continue to spread the goals among a number of different players.

Dwight Gayle – Newcastle’s top scorer right now with 7 goals

Here’s the list of goal-scorers so far:

Dwight Gayle22022
Mat Ritchie12416
Ayoze Perez7411
Yoan Gouffran527
Aleksandar Mitrovic426
Mo Diame336
Daryl Murphy516
Jonjo Shelvey505
Christian Atsu505
Ciaran Clark213
Jamaal Lascelles303
Isaac Hayden202
Grant Hanley101
DeAndre Yedlin101

Rafa knows that for set pieces it becomes a lot more difficult for opposing defenses to know who to mark if we have a number of players who can score the goals.

This is what he has said about that today:

“If there was a player who will score 30 or 40 goals I’d be delighted.”  “If you have more than one goalscorer in the squad it means it’s always difficult for the other teams.”

“When teams are deciding who to man to man mark for a corner, it makes it tougher. They think: ‘Who do we mark first?’”

“That’s the first option, but if you have four or five it’s more difficult for the rivals.”

Tammy Abraham of Bristol City is currently the top scorer in the Championship with 8 goals one more than Dwight who is in second place.

But Newcastle are the top scorers in the league with 22 goals so far in the league and that’s one more than Norwich have in second place.

Our goal difference is +12 and three goals better then Brentford in second place.

We’re doing quire well in the league so far and Rafa wants to get even better.

Sounds good to us.

Comments welcome.

Slow down Ed, you’re slipping up. Are you sure Brentford are second? Our gd is as good as a point, being clear of the rest. If we finished joint top, but won it on gd, I think I could live with that. 🙂

Interesting that Jimmy Smith and your good self referred to mis-reading of the name Clint.

I seem to remember a poster of years gone by who’s tag was CLiNTFLiCK. Asked what it meant, that poster suggested the reader ‘joined the dots’.

Haven’t a clue what he meant but nevertheless…..

Any idea who CLiNTFLiCK could have been?

Lesh, glad you asked that and not me! 🙂 I think clint is watching his lad playing rugby, but he explained his moniker as a mix of his name and his sons name. Not sure what it means eh? Mmm, I suggest you hold your nose before it expands to much! 🙂 🙂

Regarding BandB’s attempt on an earlier thread to post a football related comment without any form of apology or explanation as to her dispicable behaviour the other night. This confirms that she is either a horrible, cold, calculating manipulative person or completely deranged.

I must confess that during International breaks and between matches, I find it quite amusing to provoke a bit of controversy and banter on the blog once every drop of analysis and discussion has been wrung from the match itself. I could see what BandB was trying to instigate the other night and it did stir up the blog sufficiently to increase the number of posts. However to threaten police action and disclose private email exchanges is just taking below the belt behaviour to a new level.

As has been pointed out several times already, it seems strange that Mr. Tuff in his quest to rid the blog of anti social behaviour failed to comment on her activities particularly her attempts to poke fun at Bobby’s disability. As mocking disability was on the list of unacceptable behaviour then surely this reeks of double standards.

Betty, true clours being exposed? A win win situation for the blog really. I found the nasty mocking of your private emails very distasteful to put it mildly. Disgusting. Then again, was I surprised? Not one bit. The joke was on them mate and I wouldn’t accept an apology anyway – would you? Best to just ignore them and they might just go away with luck. 🙂 The once in a blue moon football post doesn’t fool anybody either. 🙂 Once the mask has slipped, there’s no point carrying on wearing it imo. Instead of being just a hypocrite, they look like a hypocrite wearing a mask. Doesn’t alter what’s underneath though. Only an idiot would think differently. So, don’t expect much change then! 🙂
