Is This The Top Player Newcastle Are Scouting In Belgium?

10:25 am, Wednesday, October 12th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 14 Comments

Newcastle seem to be doing a lot of scouting in Belgium this season and it’s a good question which players we are really after.

Rafa Benitez has recently said they are already working on which players we may want to sign in January, but he and Lee Charnley are also looking forward over the next three transfer windows.

One area of the team we will need strengthening in the summer is in central midfield, where we need more creative spark to create those chances.

Youri Tielemans – 19 year-old Anderlecht play-maker

Jonjo Shelvey is starting to play well for us and he’s certainly a good addition from what we had last year as far as midfield creativity goes – which wasn’t much.

One player in Anderlecht’s side who is attracting a lot of interest from top clubs is 19 year-old central midfielder Youri Tielemans.

Youri made his first-team debut against Lokeren back in July of 2013, and in the following October he became the youngest Belgian player ever to play in the UEFA Champions League.

He started the match against Olympiacos at the age of just 16 years and 148 days and he has already played 143 times with 21 goals for Anderlecht – and he doesn’t turn 20 until next May.

So this lad is a top young player in anybody’s book and normally Newcastle wouldn’t have a chance of signing the teenager.

But if we can get promoted back to the Premier League for next season then Newcastle with Rafa Benitez in charge can challenge any club for any top player.

Rafa has an excellent record of bringing youngsters through and we have already signed a couple of good Anderlecht players in the last 16 months in Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba.

But we will have no chance at all if we cannot make it back to the Premier League in May, which is why promotion is so important this season.

Youri has a Belgian father and a mother of Congolese descent and he came through the Anderlecht Youth Academy; he’s already played 14 times with 6 goals for the Belgium U-21 side.

He is one of the best teenagers in Europe at the moment and would be a tremendous signing for us if we can pull it off.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Will cost a lot and is wanted by big teams I honestly can’t see him coming but he’d be brilliant

I’d love it if we signed him. Realistically though our chances are incredibly slim.

The 2 biggest things we could offer (money aside) are guaranteed starts in the premiership (if we’re promoted) and developing/playing under Benitez.

You could argue that the passionate fans make a difference but I think you need to have play in the premiership and experienced St James on a match day to know what thats all about.

Looks like bruce is nailed on for the villa job. He likes winding people up doesn’t he? A Geordie who takes the mackem job, who plotted to play a wind up record – if only he’d won – who then goes from one rival – the blues – to another; villa. At least he’s not getting the England job…

Benbulben, nobody should underestimate your second point mate – Rafa is one hell of on attraction. He’s bordering on being a legend in the modern game and known to be a winner. Very few people have a bad word for him, considering the amount of players who’ve been coached by him and most – the vast majority – have nothing but praise for him. He’s been our best signing for many years.

Jib, fair to say I’ve yet to be convinced by Diame, but can’t help but feel he has a lot more to offer. He’s certainly better than we’ve seen so far when he played for Hull. Jury still out but prepared to see how it goes.

So far Diame hasn’t showed much, and I am starting to doubt he has what it will take. I was frustrated watching attack after attack being wasted every time the ball went to him.

Every player deserves a chance, and he has had plenty of opportunities to prove himself, but imo he failed.

The question is who can replace him?

I think that we need to bring in his replacement in January maybe Judge, in the mean time I would like to see Mitrovic up front and maybe Gayle in behind him.

A few days since, I predicted McClaren to end up back at Derby… maybe not so silly after all? 🙂

Firebug, I think all home games should be with two forwards – Gayle/Mitrovic or Murphy/Gayle would probably be my choices. Mitro looked the part for Serbia, although he did appear to be playing alongside a twin striker in that game. Linked up well with some nice flicks and touches and took his goals well. Definitely worth considering.

Has Rafa ever played with 2 up top?

  • 11 Bobbybee // Oct 12, 2016 at 12:36 PM

WWSBRD, he went with two up front when we needed to come back v Norwich, but in general, no. Doesn’t stop me wishing though mate! 🙂

    Bobby

Aye mate two strikers doubles our chances, Gayle has a bit of pace and is clever enough to time his runs, Mitrovic is good at holding the ball up , flick on’s and knock downs, as well as getting his head on the ball in the box, they could become a great partnership if given the chance.

    WWSBRD

Think Rafa likes his 4-2-3-1 too much mate.

    Bobby/firebug
Haha didnt think so lads. Prolem with Mitro is I dont think Rafa trusts him

Diame hasnt been amazing so far but for the most part I dont think hes been poor, admitting hes not been great is positive imo there are question marks around how he was when he signed for us (I heard he didnt have a preseason at all and his fitness was clearly below where it should be) but hes coming along, personally Id keep playing him

    WWSBRD

On Diame, like so many others in our recent past mate he talks the talk, but it transferring that same …. enthusiasm; onto the pitch.

In the past we have had so many of the “must do better” quotes from players. Don’t get me wrong I would love to see Diame and a few others in the team set the league alight but until words are transformed into actions they are still only words.
