Christian Atsu joined Porto at the age of 17 back in 2009 and finally made his debut for manager Andre Villas-Boas in August of 2011 against Olhanense.
He stayed at Porto for four years playing 28 games for them before joining Chelsea in 1st September of 2013 on a five year contract, but he has never played once for the Chelsea first team since then.
Instead, Atsu was sent out on loan to various teams including Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth and Malaga.
Christian Atsu in action at Rotherham
And Rafa Benitez snapped up the 42 times capped Ghanaian International in August on a season long loan with an option to buy.
And in his first start for the club at Rotherham United almost two weeks ago he scored a wonderful goal after 41 minutes to win the game for Newcastle and the winger played very well indeed.
Christian has pace and skill down that right wing and he has been talking to the press today about how he joined Newcastle:
“Rafa Benitez encourages me, tells me to use my strongest point which is my pace and not to be afraid – he believes in what I can do.”
“I was very happy when he called me and said that he would like me to join Newcastle.”
“I told him that I would like to speak with my family first, but I knew I would join Newcastle United as soon as he spoke.”
“I am a quick player and I like to run in behind the defence and create chances for my teammates.”
“Everyone here is working hard and I’m very happy when everyone is happy and in good shape.”
“We need everyone to be working hard because it is a long season.”
Christian certainly looks a very good player from what we have seen of him so far and if he keeps playing like he did against Rotherham he could turn out to be a bargain buy for the club.
And hopefully he will be back playing in the Premier League with Newcastle next season.
That’s the hope anyway.
