Atsu, Colback, Gayle And Perez Start Against Brentford

2:02 pm, Saturday, October 15th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 134 Comments

nufc-emblembrentford-fc-_logo-svg

Rafa Benitez has just named his side for the tough test against Brentford this afternoon at St. James’ Park and Dwight Gayle keeps his position up front as does Christian Atsu on the right wing, who was so outstanding against Rotherham last time out.

And as we had thought Ayoze Perez gets a start in the number 10 position in place of the out-of-form Mo Diame, who is on the bench.

There is also no Matt Ritchie who is not even on the bench because the news is he has taken ill – and Chancel Mbemba is not available because he has  a leg injury.

Newcastle (4-4-1-1): Karl Darlow; Vurnon Anita, Jamaal Lascelles (c), Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett; Christian Atsu, Jonjo Shelvey, Jack Colback, Yoan Gouffran; Ayoze Perez; Dwight Gayle
Substitutes: Matz Sels, DeAndre Yedlin, Achraf Lazaar, Grant Hanley, Isaac Hayden, Mohamed Diame, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Newcastle will continue to play in the familiar 4-2-3-1 formation and the bench is extremely strong as might have been expected.

This is what Rafa has said about our opponents today:

“We have to concentrate on the next game. Brentford are a good team – they’re doing well, they’re scoring goals and they’re not conceding too many.”

“Hopefully we can play at the level we can play, and we can do well, win and enjoy two days more, because after we have another game against Barnsley.”

“I think that they play well on the counter attack, but also they score goals. They defend well, they counter attack, they play well, they pass the ball – they’re a good team.”

“Hopefully we can attack and be on top of them all the time and then created chances in this way. But I don’t see them playing so deep that they will not cope, or will not create chances.”

85% of fans think we will win this game today.

    A scrappy 2/1 to us.

  • 4 Lindisfarne // Oct 15, 2016 at 2:10 PM

Lets get 2 goals in the first 30 mins and then bring Lazaar on for Gouffran.

  • 5 DubaiMicky // Oct 15, 2016 at 2:10 PM

Anyone got a feed for us in foreign climes?

  • 6 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Oct 15, 2016 at 2:11 PM

Wouldn’t mind seeing us swap Atsu and Gouffran on opposite wings Atsu could then fly forward knowing Dummett will be there and Gouffran and Anita would be able to link up well

Should hopefully then mean there is space in the middle for Perez and Gayle to strut their stuff

Still would prefer Mitrovic in there to hold the ball up as Gayle and Perez get out muscled too easily

  • 7 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Oct 15, 2016 at 2:21 PM

Damn 6 new signings on the bench. 4 starting. Should be too strong. Nervy 3-1 win with an Atsu goal opening the scoring. They’ll peg one back when there inevitable pressure starts but we’ll react after there goal by bringing on Mitrovic who will get the other two!!

    HWTL

    P.s I saw into the future 🙂

  • 8 AncientC // Oct 15, 2016 at 2:22 PM

I would expect Diame and Mitrovic to both get game time today, I just hope Mitro gets on first. The Perez/Mitrovic partnership is a joy to watch.

It will be interesting to see how Diame reacts to coming off the bench, I am expecting a big improvement.

I love the fact that I can never guess Rafa’s starting line up. Must be just as tricky for the opposition coaches. Those of you lucky enough to be at the ground today, make some serious noise. I want to hear you all the way from Johannesburg!

    Ed

You’ve listed it as Newcastle (4-4-1-1):

    and then said

Newcastle will continue to play in the familiar 4-2-3-1 formation.

  • 12 Mag52 // Oct 15, 2016 at 2:32 PM

9 out of 11 this week. I’ll take that.
It’s quite a challenge to second guess the manager these days.

    Thanks Lanza

  • 17 SUTTY1978 // Oct 15, 2016 at 2:38 PM

The starting XI looks physically weak and lacking in height other than the CB’s.
Benitez says he’s not playing Mitro as he wants someone behind the striker who can offer defensive strength and then plays Perez there.
Weedy little Colback playing certainly doesn’t help.
I expect us to get overrun in midfield and unable to make the ball stick upfront

  • 18 manxpie // Oct 15, 2016 at 2:39 PM

he must really dislike mbemba like hasnt had a sniff since the own goal

The ref’s living up to his reputation. Two yellows in the first half hour doesn’t auger well for a flowing game. Gouffran yellowed for a ‘bad foul’ (that’s the BBC term). Gouffran? Bad foul?. If Mitro gets on, he’ll be sent off for sure

  • 58 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:41 PM

    Atsu’s crossing has been awful.

Goes past people at will, but how about some low crosses seeing as we have Gayle and Perez advanced centrally?

  • 59 Jail for Ashley // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:43 PM

10 out of 11, had Hayden in over Colback. Ffs.

  • 60 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:46 PM

Thunlun will sink without a trace this season, 2-0 down to Stoke.

  • 61 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:47 PM

This ref doesn’t like us, think it’s fair to say after Fulham and now this 45.

  • 62 Mag52 // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:48 PM

Good result Jail, but I’ve a feeling that Rafa rather likes young Colback.

  • 63 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:50 PM

Norwich winning, Brighton losing. Pretty decent so far.

  • 64 mindshaft // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:50 PM

Bizarre reffing – booking random challenges and by all accounts our 3rd goal should have stood

  • 65 firebug666 // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:52 PM

The ref seems to have an axe to grind with us, very poor indeed I wouldn’t give him a Sunday league game.

  • 66 Blackley and Brownlie // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:54 PM

Perez has not upped his game.

Atsu is repeatedly wasteful in good positions. If it was Dummett, he’d be slated.

    Brilliant from Shelvey.

  • 67 AncientC // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:55 PM

“Brentford have only shipped nine goals this season, which makes me think they may have enough to stifle Rafa Benitez’s men. This is my shock of the weekend. Scott Hogan to net the winner.”

    Soothsayer Ian Holloway.

  • 68 Budge123 // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:58 PM

Shelvey head and shoulders above everyone else.
Atsu creating well but Delivery spoiling it.
    Dummett dreadful

  • 69 lukes26 // Oct 15, 2016 at 3:58 PM

i dont think hayden’s looked very good defending, which is not good if you’re a defensive midfielder

  • 70 AncientC // Oct 15, 2016 at 4:00 PM

Perez has a pass completion of 53% in the first half, he has also attempted 3 dribbles and been dispossessed 3 times. Uninspiring. I thought he would have done better playing central, he isn’t a kid anymore, he should be pushing on right now, especially at this level of football.

  • 71 Jail for Ashley // Oct 15, 2016 at 4:00 PM

    Luke26,
    When?

  • 72 Blackley and Brownlie // Oct 15, 2016 at 4:01 PM

Last 15 mins or so we’ve lost the momentum, drive and positivity. We can’t afford to give them a sniff. They get one back and it’s game on. They’ve shown they can move it about well and not bad when they get going.

  • 73 JamesToon // Oct 15, 2016 at 4:02 PM

    Lukes

sorry you do realise hayden isnt even playing…

Also, have a feeling january may be the time for perez to move back to spain, this league/premier league is just too physical for him, hasnt got blistering pace and gets knocked off the ball so easily, would look good in la liga where he’ll get time on the ball and can play tippy tappy football. Unless he picks up his game soon, i just don’t think england isn’t right for his career

  • 74 JamesToon // Oct 15, 2016 at 4:02 PM

As much as i love his passion and work rate

  • 75 ilovetoon8788 // Oct 15, 2016 at 4:02 PM

It seems Perez has been woeful so far. if we get a 3rd goal, we should take him off and try Mitro with Gayle.

Perez really needs to get down and improve his game.

  • 76 lukes26 // Oct 15, 2016 at 4:04 PM

    jail

i watched him at fulham on the first game of the season

dont get me wrong, he’s decent in possession and he can tackle and win balls…but his positioning is just wrong at times

  • 79 Shoulders knees // Oct 15, 2016 at 4:06 PM

  • 81 ilovetoon8788 // Oct 15, 2016 at 4:08 PM

    I agree with JamesToon,

I don’t see Perez making it and fulfilling his potential in England. I would like to see us cash in Perez maybe back to La Liga for him.

and we should go for a genuine no.10 player who is more physical in his play.
