Poll – Can Newcastle Make It Four Wins In A Row At Barnsley?

9:18 am, Monday, October 17th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 81 Comments

Newcastle have won their last three league games and we hope to make it four in a row at Oakwell tomorrow night against Barnsley.

If we can do that we will have 28 points from the first 13 games and be 4 points better off than we were seven years ago when Chris Hughton was the Newcastle manager when we were last down  in the Championship.

    50/50 win-lose. That’s interesting.

    It was a minute ago.

Forgot to respond, as I went out to do some work. You said he was deified because he brought a feel good factor to the club, at last. Can’t argue with that. I’m weary of ‘deification’, it’s dangerous I think. And the fans overdid it, maybe.

And, personally, being relegated left a nasty taste in my mouth. Still does. Some games (e.g. Sunderland, Norwich), we should have attacked, I felt.

Losing the first two brought the reality that this ain’t an easy league, there’s Champions’ League winners (old version) and ex- greats among us. It’s going to be long and hard to get out of this mess.

BUT: Rafa HAS brought the feel good factor; he has brought a winning mentality; his model is working; players seem to be on board. Hats off my man. In any case, I always liked his demeanor and approach. I felt for him when he was ‘attacked’ by fans, e.g. at Chelsea and Madrid. I felt much of it (the criticism) was undeserved.

ie. Both he and I are now in the same direction. Long may it last. He gets me promotion and some success, he can even have his statue ?

I can’t be the only one who really doesn’t care about the comparisons to the last champ season can I?

Unless the fixtures were the same it means nothing

  • 5 Jib // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:27 AM

Guess which team Nobby Solano’s little lad

  • 6 hibbit // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:29 AM

why are the expats far more critical of Rafa then the local match going fans
seems to me are they not picking up on the feel good factor around the the club and the city ??

  • 7 Vask // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:32 AM

Ibiza I replied to you on the previous thread.

So I’m guessing young Arma won’t be playing tomorrow. Looking at barnsley’s recent results it seems they have a leaky defence. Let’s hope we can flow and crash like water through the gaps and into the goals.

  • 8 Vask // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:33 AM

    Peru? It’s Peru, isn’t it?

  • 9 The overrated Frenchman // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:34 AM

hibbit@6 – that’s true. More objective, less emotional would be the answer I think.

  • 10 cyprus // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:35 AM

Responded to your post a couple threads back mate.

sorry wrote peak instead of peek but you got my point. Aren’t footballers a bit (ok, a lot) narcissistic? I’m guessing they do read social media and if their name is trending, but I may be wrong. Any PL footballers reading, please help 🙂

True Geordie does his thing, he’s good for a laugh, still, I think. And he does respond on twitter, which is nice of him.

Generally, re Gayle – Mitro, I’d give Mitro much more time out or else I fear he’ll lose interest and I think we do have a player in him. His enthusiasm is important, the pic in which he picks up Rafa -was it with one hand? 😉 is precious.

  • 11 The overrated Frenchman // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:38 AM

OK Cyprus but I don’t go back. Generally I don’t like what I see.

  • 12 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:41 AM

Are u saying ur rather play Mitro than Gayle there?

  • 13 cyprus // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:41 AM

    Did you see yesterday’s game?

The best Highlight: A Huddersfield player comes on with a piece of paper, directions from the coach. He gives it to one player, then another. A Wednesday player grabs it from him, pretends to be reading the opponents’ strategy, then gives it back to the Huddersfield player with a gigantic grin. Gold. Look it up.

  • 14 cyprus // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:42 AM

Nope. A guy scoring like that, no way. Maybe Mitro instead of… say Perez, at least some halves. Get him involved.

  • 15 Vask // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:43 AM

What I think he is saying is that he would give mitro a longer run in the team when Gayle ‘s form drops to let him know that there is still a space for him to compete for.

  • 16 cyprus // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:45 AM

No mate I don’t generally respond that way. I don’t think my post would upset you. I’m generally agreeing with you, but also giving Rafa credit for getting me in second place.

  • 17 Vask // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:47 AM

So does Gayle have a history in the number 10 spot, playing just off the main man? We haven’t really seen that but a few posters have raised it. I wouldn’t mind seeing how it could work out.

  • 18 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:47 AM

Thank Christ for that I thought u were mad haha

Personally though I don’t care that Mitro is on the bench he can’t score and he’s more interested in defenders than the ball everytime I’ve seen him

  • 19 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:49 AM

Am not sure there is space for him here tbh but if Gayles form drops off he may get a chance (though Gayle may just play through it)

  • 20 Vask // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:52 AM

So is it that you think he is not good enough talent wise, or that his style doesn’t fit well with rafa’s tactics, or his general aggressive play and attitude are always going to be a liability? Or a combination of all 3?

  • 21 cyprus // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:52 AM

I read you. Still, I think Mitro has a lot to offer. I think he can score, given a run. He’s our Charlie Austin – this one’s for you Ed 🙂

  • 22 Ron Knee // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:53 AM

I watched the match. Really funny moment!

  • 23 cyprus // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:55 AM

    Guys I found it. Cool:

  • 24 Ibizatoon // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:55 AM

Yo…It means nothing as you say, but neither do any stats really, when applied to a new game. Anything can happen. It’s just a rough marker for comparison.

Cyrpus…I’m sure many do. I was just answering whether I would 🙂

Vask…I don’t think I said the “main” point. Mainly as I did the first time around, then took it out 🙂 I just don’t see a scneario where a striker is going to be given say 5 games starting without scoring a goal. The scoring bit becomes somewhat irrelevant as I don’t expect anyone to get that sort of run, given the rotation system. Which was my badly made point.

Hibbit…That is an issue for us non locals. We’re not in the midst of it. The knock on effect of that is many then get called mackems for not being quite so overjoyed at the current state of play.

Then of course there are those, who tend to hover around the middle anyway, who don’t swing from one side of the scale to the other.

  • 25 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 9:57 AM

Combination mate. I think he could be a good player but I don’t think he will reach that level, his attitude and temperament won’t let him. I’d love him to prove me wrong but I’ve seen little from him in a town shirt to suggest he will

Impact sub he has a place but starting games? Am not so sure

Not just him though am pretty critical of Perez and his future but at least Rafa likes him for now

  • 26 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:01 AM

Austin is a better player mate

Yeah but there is no comparison, we just need to look at the table to see where we are. It’s a big bear I admit but honestly it makes my face unhappy wherever I see Hoots vs Rafa stuff

Fair play if people are into it but I will complain at it haha

  • 27 beermonkey // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:02 AM

i think mitro will start tomoz
played well for his country took his goals well
for me he looks alot leaner

if he keeps mitro or murphy on the bench with none or little game time and we lose gayle for a few weeks we will have to wait till mitro finds his scoring boots
he has found them at the mo and its better to have them both in form

but it is a big call to drop an in form striker

what is nice is we have goals all over the pitch now that must make that call a little easier

  • 28 Ibizatoon // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:04 AM

Yo…I think you may be taking this one a little far mate 🙂 In theory, there are no comparisons from season to season, but everyone and their mother does it. There are new teams, managers and players each and every time. We work with what we can.

Still, with Anita doing well, it’s nice to have something to add to the complaint list 🙂

  • 29 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:10 AM

The time changes though it’s been awhile since Hoots romped us back up and the opponents have changed, the tactics have changed the fixtures have changed

Might as well add Keegans season in with it aswell as a comparison piece how does our current team stack up against that one? How far back do we go? Honestly I just se it as utterly pointless

Anita haha well I would be honest but I can’t have too many conversations going on here haha

  • 30 Lindisfarne // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:12 AM

Cyprus LOL at the video clip.

Regarding rotating the strikers, IMO it is more a question of when will we see two up front?

  • 31 Vask // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:18 AM

I just meant from what I discerned from what I’ve read that that was the main point of the rotation system. Not trying to put words in your mouth mate.

I hope mitro can channel his aggression into improved performance but whether he can or not remains to be seen. Still young and all that…

  • 32 Ibizatoon // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:18 AM

Yo…I think you should definitely start a Keegan comparison if it makes you happier.

I do get your point, that it is pointless. Probably about as pointless as you and I debating just how pointless it is.

    What was the point again?

  • 33 Ibizatoon // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:19 AM

Vask…Then why did you have me pinned down trying to clamp my mouth open?

    No worries mate.

  • 34 beermonkey // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:23 AM

i dont think we will see 2 up top

  • 35 The overrated Frenchman // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:23 AM

This “rotation” is interesting Lindisfarne. It seems to be an excuse to leave out the players he doesn’t like, more than keeping everybody fresh. I wonder when we’ll see Shelvey “rotated”? This is the same Shelvey he dropped because of his “Hollywood” passes, by the way. Bit different now with all the other creative midfielders gone, isn’t it?

  • 36 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:23 AM

He is still young mate so there’s hope but as to wanting him in the team I’d rather see Murphy at this point

Haha sounds like a heap of fun I admit but Itd limit my time from talking football so I will leave it too others I think

  • 37 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:26 AM

Not sure Rafa needs an excuse to leave out players he doesn’t like

  • 38 Ron Knee // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:30 AM

“Newcastle United’s attendance against Brentford yesterday was the SIXTH highest across Europe on Saturday.”

  • 39 Jib // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:30 AM

It looks like Darlow has deposed Sels , which is rather ironic because the goal conceded v Brentford (from a corner) had a lot of similarities to the goal conceded by Sels which he took so much flak for.

  • 40 Ibizatoon // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:35 AM

TOF…I don’t think it was just a case of he was dropped for his Hollywood passes, more that he was not pulling them off and wasn’t offering much else. Since being dropped, his game has improved and we’re seeing better from him. Don’t you think?

Jib…I missed a fair few of the early season games due to work and stream availability. What I saw of Sels really didn’t fill me with confidence and more importantly, it didn’t seem to fill the defense with much either.

I’m sure he’s a good keeper and will get his chance again. Darlow certainly hasn’t let himself down though, from what I’ve seen. Nice problem to have.

  • 41 hibbit // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:35 AM

i think the Fans/Rafa/Club have one goal this season and thats Promotion
nothing else matters as long as the points keep coming in why would/should Rafa change his ways
some folk are never happy !!!

  • 42 Jib // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:37 AM

I think the plan was to rotate Diamé , Shelvey and A.N.Other.
There sems to be problems getting Diamé up to speed and the A.N.Other will likely be Brentford’s Alan Judge (who was in the crowd Saturday and will have loved the atmosphere ) in the January window.

  • 43 Jib // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:38 AM

Perhaps Fernando Forestieri if the Owls are going nowhere.

  • 44 hibbit // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:39 AM

    The overrated Frenchman
you know which players Rafa likes or dislikes ??

  • 45 Ibizatoon // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:39 AM

Hibbit…That of course is the goal, not sure that nothing else matters. I doubt Rafa would agree with that statement one bit.

I agree that I doubt Rafa will change his ways though, why would he (as you say)? He seems more than happy for people to analyze him, so not sure where the problem is. It’s just a blog to view opinions / concerns etc.

  • 46 hibbit // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:41 AM

    The overrated Frenchman
How do you know which players Rafa likes or dislikes ??

  • 47 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:44 AM

1 goal conceded wasn’t why he was dropped?

Any update on my Pedro bashing?

  • 48 Jib // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:48 AM

1 goal conceded wasn’t why he was dropped?

    I know

    That’s why I didn’t say that.

I said he got a lot of flak for it.

  • 49 Jib // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:51 AM

    Alan Judge
He’s the one at the back with his finger in his ear talking to his agent on his mobile

  • 50 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:52 AM

Hmm he got flak for it because it was an example of his overall play and how he was struggling

Take it we are to forget the Pedro thing then eh? Well ok then keep me updated if that changes

  • 51 hibbit // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:53 AM

promotion is the mandate how Rafa does it is immaterial as long as he does

  • 52 hibbit // Oct 17, 2016 at 10:56 AM

whats the story with moncur ??

  • 53 jayphoto // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:12 AM

@WWSBRD – agree with not comparing this season to the last championship season. Our side is far different now, it’s a fair bit younger but it’s also got a few players that are far too good for the championship :ie -Shelvey, on what I’ve seen I’d probably say Lascelles, Clark and Anita are a level above aswell. We’ve also got a ridiculously strong squad, 2 players in most positions which we didn’t have before.
Think the regular line up after xmas will be different to the regular line up currently. Got a feeling Yedlin and Lazaar will be the starters once certain criteria is met.
Also, theres far more money in the championship than last time we were here. Last time, there was realistically 3-4 sides that could hope for promotion, whereas this year there seems to be 10-12 sides that look possible aswell as teams like Derby and Villa that are miles out but have the squads to go on a run if they get themselves together. Glad we’ve played both of them away as reckon they’ll become forces now.
Its a much better league than before, much better technically and financially.

  • 54 jayphoto // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:16 AM

@Jib – I reckon Sels will be back at some point. They’ll be working with him in training, I bet. Personally think he’ll be a good keeper for us, just needs to adapt to the more physical nature of the English game.

  • 55 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:20 AM

Glad am not the only one who can’t get away with the comparison mate

On Yedlin and Lazaar I think ur right I can’t see a reason they’d sign for us to be second choice behind Anita and Dummett (both are good back ups but no forward thinking team would have them as starters in the pl)

Am quite happy Lazaar is being brought on slowly makes a nice change, Yedlin I think should be starting now though

  • 56 jayphoto // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:27 AM

Have to give credit to Rafa on one thing, he’s thrown himself into every aspect of Newcastle United. Seems like a man with a plan for the whole club, also seems to recognize the importance of the community, Seems to be forever doing things with different Newcastle based organisations.
I think as a person, he’s a top man, his wife too seems the same cut, been a long long time since we had a manager that both knew what he was doing completely AND was a man of honour and integrity. We’ll walk this league, after xmas the small squads/lots of games will hit nearly all of the sides around us whereas we have players in all positions that have been rotated. Interesting that if you look throughout rafas time with Liverpool and Napoli and Valencia, his sides always got more points than anyone else in their leagues after January, no small part down to his rotation system.
Downside with rafa and Newcastle fans is that rafa obviously has a plan for the whole season whereas a lot of the fans don’t look past the next matchday

  • 57 bettyswallocks // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:28 AM

Jib……. Where did young Sterry go? Did he go on loan?

  • 58 jayphoto // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:33 AM

@wwsbrd – reckon Lazaar is to do with settling in the Northeast, lad doesn’t speak much English yet either and was still living in a hotel till recent.
Yedlin looked good when he played. Not entirely sure he’s not already first choice, I saw rafa say he was rested because the scans showed he was susceptible to an ankle injury? He also travelled further than most and came back later than most and rafa seems to field a side of more players than stayed after international weeks.
Klinnsmann complained that Yedlin was tired on US duty aswell so maybe something in that?
Yedlin is without doubt the quickest player I can remember seeing at Newcastle
The interesting part of this season so far for me has been Mbemba has looked shaky, whereas Clark has come in and in my opinion been a revelation. He’s played so well the last few games. Similarly Perez hasn’t looked good, but gouffran has!

  • 59 Budge123 // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:39 AM

Jay really interesting point you make about post Jan performance and Rafa’s previous teams.
Do you have the stats on that mate?
I’ve not been convinced by the ‘we’ll be fresher’ argument for rotation so it would be very encouraging if it is a trend that we’ll improve comparatively post Jan

  • 60 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:39 AM

Am with u on Lazaar I think Rafa has said as much in interviews. Hope ur right on Yedlin I like him a lot and from what I’ve seen he will make the RB his spot (I assumed he’d been rested due to travels but u never can tell)

I don’t agree on Mbemba looking shaky though barring that Wolves game he looked a cut above the rest of the league, best defender we have imo I can see why Clark and Lascelles are being stuck with but long term Mbemba has to get back in there for me

  • 61 jayphoto // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:41 AM

@Jib – reckon recruitment in January might be a bit different to the summer. Heard Judge was a done deal so he’ll probably come in, but players like forestieri might not be targeted. Reason for it will be, if we are top of the championship we can attract a higher standard of player than in the summer as there is a far higher probable chance we’ll offer premier league football next season. In the summer, a lot of players will have been put off as theres always a chance we could have done a ‘leeds’ so mainly championship players were looked at. Reckon we’ll be a much more attractive proposition to players in the premier league not getting as much game time as they’d like.

  • 62 clinath@ed // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:45 AM

Have to agree about that post Xmas form of Rafa’s sides. Hope he can continue in that vein.
As teams tire through the season, they will begin to take points of each other too…

  • 63 jayphoto // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:47 AM

@budge123 – no stats, was in a broadsheet article I read on twitter mainly about his Liverpool side a while back and stuck with me. Think his sides routinely go on really strong runs in the 2nd half of seasons, I think a few years running at Liverpool they won like 13 of last 15 games. Did a similar thing at Napoli too when he’s almost got the fans on his back etc around February and then just pulls off a massive winning run. It’d explain his success in getting to later rounds of champions league with Valencia and Liverpool so often too

  • 64 Jail for Ashley // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:47 AM

I’m not sure if I missed your reply to my question earlier. You clearly don’t like Rafa Benitez for whatever reason, who would you like to see him replaced with?
Personally I like the comparisons with 2009 as it should keep those drums quiet and gauges whether or not we are on track to break Readings record. For every game we stay ahead of Hoots heroes the record is there for the taking.

  • 65 Markaccus // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:50 AM

I think the only reason Yedlin isn’t the starting RB yet is because he is not up to speed defensively. Rafa will likely make that his first consideration when looking at a defender. I dont think it will be too much longer. Lazaar might take more time. The couple of times I have seen him, he can be quite wasteful going forward, and is nowhere near dummet defensively (again, the first consideration). He is an exciting prospect, though, so I hope he comes through…maybe in the new year.

  • 66 jayphoto // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:50 AM

@WWSBRD – it was the wolves game mainly I had in mind. From what I can gather defence seems to be one of Lacelles or Hanley for one position (both 6″4 and aerial behemoths) and one of either Mbemba or Clark for the other spot, both being slightly quicker, but also being better with the ball at his feet too.
Its like rafas on football manager and wants one Limited defender stopper and one Ball playing defender supporting. (apologies for the football manager lingo if you don’t play it)

  • 67 clinath@ed // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:52 AM

Agree also with the type of player we should be looking for in January. That’s why a good run before then is important. the summer purchases were to get us out this division, the next sales should see us preparing for the Prem.

  • 68 jayphoto // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:56 AM

@Jail for Ashley- If we’re getting rid of Benitez, I quite like the look of that Guardiola chap at man city….
Eddie Howe and Koeman doing decent jobs too….
Madness if anyone thinks we’re getting a better manager than rafa currently…
Our last few appointments have been Kinnear, Shearer, Hughton (did ok tbf) Pardew, Carver and McClaren….
I honestly fear our next appointment whenever that may be…

  • 69 Budge123 // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:56 AM

    Thanks Jay.
I looked at his record and saw a constant achievement in cups but not in the league and assumed the rotation limited league runs developing.

If the history is there to prove me wrong I am more than happy!

  • 70 hibbit // Oct 17, 2016 at 11:58 AM

next appointment have i missed something ????

  • 71 WWSBRD // Oct 17, 2016 at 12:01 PM

Yeah that’s how I’d see it aswell hard on Hanley though he’s the only on I see as back up. I do see Mbemba being better than Clark though he is on a fine run of form currently

Haha I do play FM mate no worries

  • 72 martoon // Oct 17, 2016 at 12:05 PM

Markaccus @65 – I think you are spot on. On Saturday when Yedlin came on he was great going forward but not so good defending. As for Lazaar he just looks lost whenever he comes on and on Saturday he looked scared to tackle. I think Lazaar is better than that but just needs time to settle and adjust to a new country, language and English football.

  • 73 jayphoto // Oct 17, 2016 at 12:06 PM

@budge123 yeah think it was when Liverpool came 2nd and nearly won the title they won like 14 of the last 15 games.
Came 7th when he got sacked there, but the owners sold Xabi Alonso and he lost torres and gerrard for big portions of the season. Was criticised for nothing having enough strength in depth but not sure how much was to do with Gillete and Hicks, seemed awful owners.
Think he did a similar thing as Chelsea manager where they ended strong finishing 3rd, think they were like 8th when he took over from di matteo.
TBH I think he’s setting us up quite similar to his Napoli team more so than his other sides. We’re missing a true #10 though, I thought Arma could do it as it’s his natural position, but with Gayle as #9 I think we’re far too lightweight up top with Perez or Arma just behind him. Reckon, partly due to gouffrans form on the left, that’ll be a position filled in January as Diame looks better further back the field

  • 74 jayphoto // Oct 17, 2016 at 12:11 PM

@wwsbrd – reckon lascelles excelled development and importance to the side hasn’t helped Hanley’s game time.
Think he might start tomorrow with Mbemba though as Lascelles went off sick on Saturday and Barnsley game follows quite quickly. With the options he has, theres no need to take a risk on CB position. Think for sure Mbemba will play against Barnsley as they’re quite quick up top. Probably helps that their star striker is ineligible…

  • 75 Jib // Oct 17, 2016 at 12:11 PM

I would certainly be happy with Forestieri.
He has La Liga and SerieA experience and played for Italy up to U21.
I think he could hack it in the PL – he could be our Mahrez .

  • 76 Jib // Oct 17, 2016 at 12:13 PM

About Murphy playing against his old club on Saturday – isn’t it usually the case that the selling club insists that their ex-player sits out playing against them for the first game (or both that season) so they don’t come back to haunt them right away?

I’ll be very surprised if he’s even on the bench on Saturday, which will be frustrating for the bloke if he’s actually fit to play.

Lascelles has been very good once the captaincy sunk in

I’d be surprised to see both Mbemba and Hanley start against Barnsley but who knows these days, I’d plump for Lascelles and Mbemba starting though

putting it out there, I think that currently (not accounting for future potential) Murphy is a better option than Mitrovic! His work rate is phenomenal and he creates a lot of space for others. Would surprise me if we see him play alongside Gayle at some point. He’s championship ready, and from what I’ve seen of Mitro (I know hes a fan favourite) he’s wasteful and a bit rash. His best game in a year at Newcastle has come playing for Serbia…

@wwsbrd – didn’t mean drop Lascelles. Im a huge fan of the guy! Seems to be embracing it all and growing by the day. Just that he got subbed because he was ill on Saturday, not sure that will have cleared to play tomorrow.
first name on the team sheet (along with shelvey) if hes fit
