After Barnsley showed a stubbornness in defense in the first half last night at Oakwell it was Newcastle and Dwight Gayle who gave Barnsley their 5th defeat in six league games last night with two unanswered second half goals.
Both goals were typical Gayle opportunist efforts, especially the second when he beat goalkeeper Adam Davies to the ball and whipped the ball into the back of the net and at 2-0 Newcastle were in full command of this game.
Rafa Benitez last night before the game
And with Norwich City throwing away a two goal half-time lead at Craven Cottage to draw 2-2, Newcastle go top of the Championship for the first time this season.
Rafa Benitez was pleased with what he thought was a professional performances from our lads last night:
“Obviously, a lot of people talked about the Championship and said it would be a very difficult and physical competition,”
“We knew what was coming, and we knew we would have a lot of games like this.” “If we can win matches like this, they are the games that can make a difference.”
“It was a very professional performance. It was difficult, against a good team. “We knew that they could push and press with intensity and physicality, and when they could, they played.”
“We knew it could be like this. We had to work hard in the first half, and then when we scored the goal in the second half, it was more open and we had more chances.”
There were 5501 traveling Newcastle fans at Oakwell last night and that was the biggest crowd there since back in 2010.
That’s just amazing support from our fans – incredible – and they are helping to make a big difference this season.

Comment #1A small worry of mine at the moment concerns our top scorer.
With matches coming at the rate of two per week, I can see him getting crocked if he plays in each game, and our second string CFs will find it very hard to hit the ground running if they are not getting any match time.

Same here, the Chron site is hopeless and very irritating.
And it doesn’t download quickly either….

I’m using an ad blocker. Maybe that’s making it even slower?

I have AdBlocker and Ghostery both running and it is still slow. The AdBlocker stops adverts that are not embedded, and Ghostery stops all the trackers from gathering information about your browsing habits, when both are running the internet is a lot faster for me.
The chonicle now has a red background full of stupid adverts and that is what has slowed down their site. I bypass it now as any story they put up is redone by plenty of other sites.
