Rafa Benitez Lauds Newcastle Striker

8:41 am, Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 42 Comments

Dwight Gayle scored another brace last night for Newcastle at Oakwell and the 2-0 win propelled Newcastle to the top of the Championship table and now we need to stay there.

Dwight is having a terrific season and he looks well worth the £10M we paid Crustal Palace for him in the summer.

And if he can score the goals that take Newcastle back to the Premier League he will already have done the job he was signed for.

Dwight Gayle brilliantly scores Newcastle’s second goal last night

And it would be real value for money for only £10M – given we will take in around £150M each season back in the Premier League.

Dwight is a lot better than we thought he was when he signed in the summer and he again scored two opportunist goals for us last night and this lad is fast becoming a new number 9 hero on Tyneside.

He’s completely unfazed about wearing the number 9 shirt and it seems to inspire him – as do the Newcastle fans.

Rafa talked about his match-winner after the game last night:

“We knew that Dwight could score goals,” “We were impressed at the beginning because he was working very hard in the training sessions.”

“When someone has his quality in front of goal, and is also working hard, it is a good combination.”

“It is not easy to have both things at the same time. I think he is enjoying himself and he is doing very well.”

“As soon as we knew that Andros Townsend was leaving, Ritchie and Gayle were our priorities.”

“We tried to sign them and knew they would make us fine in these positions.”

“We were very happy to get them, and very pleased as soon as we watched Gayle train.”  “We knew what he was capable of, and he has always trained very well.”

Dwight now has scored 13 Championship goals for us this season and is easily leading our Man of the Match poll for last night.

Steady Ed – I hadn’t even posted on the previous topic before you’d moved on to the next. Multi-tasking’s quite hard for us old codgers at this time in the morning !

Clubs such as Barnsley who have a strong football tradition are to be applauded for welcoming 5,500 toon fans and pragmatically adding some income to their bank balance while ensuring a lively atmosphere for all fans. It was good to see Brentford bringing so many fans to SJP and mingling with out fans before and after the game. Most of us thought the Championship could be an enjoyable experience and so FA so good. I think there’s 6,000 going to Preston and we should have 52,000 for Ipswich with shared memories of Sir Bobby – hope he gets a great chant from all the fans on Saturday.

Gayle has been excellent for us despite feeding on scraps in a lot of the games

  • 3 Spoof // Oct 19, 2016 at 9:05 AM

I’m not surprised one tiny little bit by Gayle, as soon as we signed him I said that he would thrive now he has a side playing in a manner to get the best out of him, he has been a good goal scorer all his career but struggled at Palace due to his managers being Pulis, Warnock and Pardew, no disrespect to any of those managers but they all prefer a target man as there main striker whereas Rafa has usually preferred a quicker more mobile striker, and seeing that Gayle is the only one who really fits the Rafa mould then to me it was obvious that Gayle would have a really great chance to impress and he has done so, I also said that Mitro could struggle for the same reasons that would enable Gayle to thrive and it does seem that I have been correct on both occasions, it’s not very often I’m right but so far I have been with Mitro and Gayle, it would be nice if Mitro could get a chance but I don’t see it happening any time soon.

In Martoons prediction game I had Gayle to be top scorer with 32 goals, and player of the season as well, so obviously I really did rate the lad before he even kicked a ball for us.

I’ve got a hundred quid on him at eleven to one

  • 6 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 19, 2016 at 10:38 AM

It’s like watching Cisse with a brain and in fast-forward.

Having a reliable ST makes all the difference.

  • 7 scout // Oct 19, 2016 at 10:48 AM

    11 goals not 13

  • 8 scout // Oct 19, 2016 at 10:49 AM

Ive got 100 on at 9/1 slybet

  • 9 hibbit // Oct 19, 2016 at 10:51 AM

another clean sheet needs a mention !!
always makes a win easier if we dont conced

  • 10 Jail for Ashley // Oct 19, 2016 at 10:59 AM

I hope it comes in for you scout!

  • 11 Jail for Ashley // Oct 19, 2016 at 11:01 AM

I had a tenner on 2-0 last night at sevens. Not doing that again though as I was kinda hoping we didn’t get a third which is no good.

  • 12 martoon // Oct 19, 2016 at 11:11 AM

Spoof @4 – So you did – I also notice you predicted 1st with 108 points so you maybe pretty close to that also if we keep going at the rate we’ve started 🙂

This bus is getting very crowded. 🙂

    Also no injuries!

I think poor Rotherham are in for a bit of a hiding when they visit SJP next year, they made us sweat down there and I think they’ll pay for that.

  • 15 JamesToon // Oct 19, 2016 at 11:34 AM

Love away days, apart from trying to get out car parks.

    Fans were fantastic last night.

Just love the fact we seem to have togetherness, team spirit, everyone pulling in the same direction, good players who work hard, a world class manager and a world class fan base!

  • 16 JamesToon // Oct 19, 2016 at 11:36 AM

I’d go with this against Ipswich:

    Yedlin Lascelles Clark Lazaar
    Hayden Shelvey
    Ritchie Mitrovic Gouffran

Sels Hanley Anita Colback Atsu Perez Murphy

  • 17 JamesToon // Oct 19, 2016 at 11:38 AM

We should always keep the same core of Darlow, Lascelles, Clark, Hayden, Shelvey, Ritchie and Gayle and poss even Gouffran, I don’t think rotating the rest such as full backs and attacking mid should effect the team too much

  • 18 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Oct 19, 2016 at 11:38 AM

Not pretty last night gave the ball away to easy at times but a great result and another clean sheet. Could it be Rafa has decided on his ‘first team’ back four and keeper. I also think Darlow has made a difference at the back – has added authority to the defence with his command of the six yard box.

Roll-on Saturday and another full-house – like to see the team give someone a hammering at home – starting saturday

And good news on the Rugby League coming back to SJP for another ‘Magic Weekend’ next May

  • 19 cestriasteve // Oct 19, 2016 at 11:38 AM

Great analysis there about how to get the best from Gayle, really enjoyed reading your post.

I’m going to the game on Saturday, getting a rare Saturday off, haven’t been since Norwich, really hope it doesn’t turn out like that game, recovering from a stroke is bad enough but putting yourself through 96 minutes of that after the 36 flights of stairs is a killer!! Literally. Lol

  • 20 clinath@ed // Oct 19, 2016 at 11:38 AM

Watching the game via Periscope last night, from behind the goal, help appreciate the movement and work rate you Gayle gets through. He dragged those centre halves all over the place.

  • 21 JamesToon // Oct 19, 2016 at 11:42 AM

Did you know, we overall have the most shots per game out of the whole championship, and concede the least amount of shots per game

  • 22 Shadow_Shearer // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:07 PM

Does anybody else think gayle second goal last night reminded them of tino asprilla goal against liverpool in the famous 4-3 game back in the keegan days???

  • 24 Jail for Ashley // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:10 PM

You’re not allowed to call them the Keegan days it upsets Jib. You have to refer to them as the pre Mike Wallace Ashley days.

  • 25 hibbit // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:12 PM

what do you think Mitrovic will add to that team and why would you break up a defence thats working so well ?

  • 26 Jail for Ashley // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:18 PM

Nobody can understand why Diame is in the team and why Mitro isn’t even getting a look in.

  • 27 Jail for Ashley // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:19 PM

Maybe he’s waiting game until we’ve played everyone once before unleashing him as a surprise element.

  • 28 Jail for Ashley // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:20 PM

    Waiting game????

  • 29 WWSBRD // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:23 PM

I can understand why Rafa isnt picking Mitro mate

  • 30 Essex Geordie Bill // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:26 PM

Rafa must see something that we don’t in Diame.

    Seems to be working though.

  • 31 hibbit // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:28 PM

    Jail for Ashley

i get that about Diame and agree
but could Mitro play in that position or would you move Gayle there
is Mitro a luxury we can’t afford at the moment ?

  • 32 martoon // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:31 PM

JamesToon @16 – Have you seen Lazaar play? He looks completely out of his depth at the moment. It maybe because he has not adjusted to England & Championship football but no way would I start him in an important league game.

  • 33 Essex Geordie Bill // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:32 PM

Diame appears to be a bit of a luxury at the moment, so anyone could be slotted in for him, Perez is the obvious choice

  • 34 hibbit // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:45 PM

    Essex Geordie Bill

i get that about Diame but as you said earlier Rafa must see something he likes as he keep playing him

  • 35 WWSBRD // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:46 PM

On paper Perez should replace Diame but on paper Perez should be starting every week unfortunately hes been poor for over a year

Why Rafa is picking Diame over him imo is because Diame works harder, a lot harder

  • 36 firebug666 // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:51 PM

The likes of Perez, Mitrovic and Lazaar will have a chance to stake a claim for the starting 11 in the cup games no doubt.

I still think Mitrovic should be given game time, and will come good for us, if he can control his temperament he could be devastating in this league.

  • 37 Hail Wor Ashley // Oct 19, 2016 at 12:59 PM

Reason he is persisting with Diame is Diame has proven he can play as a 10 elsewhere, albeit within a different system and asked to do different things.

That’s the sticking point though, Diame is being asked to play no10, but not play to his strengths. Mitro would hold it better but lacks the mobility and Perez has better mobility but lacks the ability to make it stick consistently, so Diame is the best fit as he’s adequate at both and also possess more ability for a special moment than both of them.

Perez should be looking to develop into a Gayle type of ST. Has the knack in the box, but perhaps a yard short on pace.

  • 38 AncientC // Oct 19, 2016 at 1:00 PM

Diame’s pass completion was good last night, 90% – the best on the pitch out of both sides.

Hayden won 7 aerial challenges, which was a lot more than anybody else… being that dominant in the air, I wonder how good he would be at CB in a few years, when he fills out a bit more.

  • 39 stuart no9 // Oct 19, 2016 at 1:06 PM

newcastle starting yo get it together now , and gayle starting to get into gear , must admit at the start of the season i wasnt too sure about him even though i knew he could score but was he up to the task at newcastle sooo pleased its tiurning out right for him now , and i feel he hasnt started yet . being top in october was something i expected before the season started , but after the first few games i thought , ooops maybe im wrong , now we are there i fully expect us to stay there or 2nd sometimes , but rafa is in the awing now as are are the lads . Being top also brings apprehension from opponents now IMO.
I feel opponents may show us too much respect which will allow us to control games more and take advantage of the situation , maybe not all teams but most teams will turn out with the fear factor in the tunnel , anyone agree or disagree??

  • 40 Essex Geordie Bill // Oct 19, 2016 at 1:10 PM

Just been looking at the 1st team squad on NUFC site and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of options other than playing Mitrovic, Murphy or Perez as alternatives..

Another possibility, which has probably already been suggested is to play Gouffron central with Yedlin or Lazar on the wing.

  • 41 Lindisfarne // Oct 19, 2016 at 1:28 PM

First half was not at all good last night and not because the opposition were better. Goal constantly kicked to the left and out, possession constantly lost, loads of throw ins with nothing gained and a general lack of quality. Could not watch the second half but I imagine the score whitewashed the poor overall performance, the PL will welcome us back with open arms.

I know we can only play what’s in front of us but there seems to be alot of hot air being blown over the result. When in reality the supposed first team still has a long way to go, both in terms of technique and number of matches. No doubt we will walk the league, but it will be a real eye opener in the Cups
