Rafa Benitez is a modest man for somebody who has already achieved some great things in his management career.
That includes winning the Champions League with Liverpool and the Europa League with both Valencia and Liverpool among other trophies Rafa has picked up in his sparkling career.
Rafa Benitez – can’t be compared to Robson or Keegan – yet
But he has rejected comparisons being made with two of our great managers of the fairly recent past – Sir Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan.
That’s because Rafa says he’s done nothing yet at Newcastle.
This is what Rafa has said in the Telegraph today:
“I hear the fans and read when they talk about me and they compare me with Sir Bobby Robson or Kevin Keegan.”
“I am really pleased about that. I have my CV, but when they put you at the level for people who have been so important to this club and, in football, it is always good, always positive.”
“You have to be proud of that. But I am still at the beginning. My career is fine, because I am old.”
“But in terms of Newcastle, the city and what Sir Bobby meant to the club, that is still far away for me.”
Rafa has quickly transformed Newcastle as both a team and a club and he’s only just started.
But the fans have tremendous confidence in the Spanish manager that he can bring the good times back again to the club.
That would start with Newcastle being promoted this season and back to the big time and the Premier League.
And then when we read the papers like the Mirror we may be mentioned somewhere near the top of the page and not at the very bottom – if we make the news at all these days.
