Winger Beating Himself Up For Missed Chances

Matt Ritchie had another good game for Newcastle yesterday and he scored our third goal and has been playing very well for us all season.

But on the Newcastle website after the 3-0 home win over Ipswich yesterday Matt admitted he’s been a little unhappy that he’s missed a few chances of late.

That will probably come as a surprise to most fans, since Matt is already a huge favorite at the club and has settled his family on Tyneside.

Matt Ritchie after scoring yesterday

But it’s also an indication of the high standards the former Bournemouth winger has about his game.

This is what Matt has said on the Newcastle web-site:

“I’ve been beating myself up a little bit. I’ve had a couple of chances of late – I had one against Norwich late on and I had one in the first half as well that I probably should have done a bit better with,”

“I was delighted to get the goal in the end, but most importantly the three points and put them out of sight.”

“All our games are big. Obviously the league is a priority, but we want to go as far as we can in the cup competitions as well, and we’ve got the squad to do that.”

“I’m really looking forward to that. We’d go into the last eight if we win against Preston, so it’s a great opportunity for us.”

Matt has so far played 14 games for Newcastle with 3 goals and 4 assists.

I thought he looked a little off the pace yesterday, not as good as he normally is, in fact the lad i was sitting next to me said he thought he may get subbed just before he set up Perez for his 2nd, then he goes and scores a beauty…….thats why im on here and Rafa is the gaffa i suppose

Would of been happy with him signing for us in the PL…maybe he can have a word in the ear of a certain Bournemouth striker when we are back in the big time

the games to come thick and fast in the championship dare i say good practice for europe lol
i would think there will be a line out side of rafa’s office with players wanting to play tues night in the cup

    sels
    yedlin mbemba hanley gamez
    heyden diame
    atsu perez lazaar
    mitro

thats not a bad team cant see rafa making such wholesale changes but players like shelvey gayle whilst having the biggest impact will have to be rested at some point
i fear losing both of those to injury

Shelvey, Gayle and Gouuffy subbed – the 3 main men? Avoiding injuries?
Looked like Ritchie was about to be subbed. Good to see 2 natural wingers.
Did we have less width yesterday? Normally Anita and Dummett are on the white line when we have the ball. Seemed strange, though maybe just down to Ipswich being so well organised that we ended up passing back to Darlow and lumping it forward a lot.

I can only imagine that he signed for us in the expectation that he would be back in the PL next season but with the hope that he is with a side that will do quite well rather than face a relegation battle, when we get back up I doubt very much that Rafa will set a 40 point target to avoid relegation, I would expect Rafa’s views being more in line with KK’s when he took us up, consolidate, horlicks, top six is what I want.

Yes we had less width for most of the game – tended to hooooooof it long to Goufran who got a battering in the air – play to much long ball kept it narrow – until the penny seem to have dropped in the 70th minute – from their on kept the ball on the deck with Yedlin Ritchie Dummett and Atsu getting wide, kept the ball on the deck and with slick quick passing opened up Ipswich – scoring two goals.

Our biggest test of the season will be against Preston, no one would have said that before the season, beating Huddersfield and Norwich within a space of a few days.

Top six isn’t what I would expect as it is a huge leap, but certain managers seem destined to be always doing well and they will have high expectancies as KK did, Rafa is of the same ilk, viewing 40 points and avoiding as being a bench mark for success would probably horrify him, I expect that he would demand that we avoid the consolidation season and just go for top six instantly, he is a winner and I doubt that he could even consider survival only as being a good season.

Klopp, Mourinho, Pep, Wenger, some fantastic managers in the PL, Rafa belongs in that company, he will be wanting to compete and beat them and he will want to do it as quickly as possible, when we get up he won’t hang about, and he knows that he is at a club big enough to compete with them, that is probably why he came to us.

Matt Ritchie shouldn’t be to hard on himself, all creative players miss chances in matches, but he still managed to put one away though and it was good goal, one of my favourite players this season, we are lucky to have two very good creative players in him and shelvey, most teams have only got one.

I think he has got to be hard on himself, as have all the squad because if they aren’t showing the right I must work harder and do better attitude then they won’t get a game, Colo dropped and then out, Wijnaldum dropped, Shelvey dropped, Lascellas his newly appointed captain dropped after a difficult start, Mitro, the fans favourite virtually frozen out, Lazaar, is he still with us………obviously not showing the same fight and determination that Dummett is, Rafa doesn’t mess about.

Not quite starting off with Rafa Bingo but it occurred to me that having played 3 games in 7 days we could put out the following team with NO starters from yesterday’s game to give some a rest and avoid bookings>

    Sels
Anita / Gamez, Mbemba, Hanley, Azzar
    Atsu, Tiote, Hayden, Diame
    Mitro, Murphy.
Please note – I am not saying that that would be the team I’d choose or even that it’s anything like the side that will play. Just pointing out the size and quality of the squad that we presently have.

Big investment? Didn’t Leicester win the Prem without spending pots of money? Ah but yes, I do see how they’re struggling this season.

So yes, you’re probably right about the need to invest in the quality required to impact on the Prem.

Yes your right, that was harsh and totally wrong of me, after all I haven’t really seen the lad play so is it fair to make an assessment of him, no it’s not and in fairness to him contrary to many peoples view Dummett is a very good left back, so no shame in not being able to force his way into the side, truth be known when we singed him I looked at his last two seasons and he was played more as a winger than a FB so I was expecting him to compete with Aarons for the LW position, but The Gouff seems to have made that position his own.

Yeah, I’m trying to get Mitro and Perez in the team without dropping Gayle, who occasionally drifts out to the left and right and looks comfortable. He has the pace and workrate to work the flanks. I’ve got a bit of a bee in my bonnet about Mitro and Perez being our best central attacking pairing, but Gayle of course still needs to play too.

I assume that you are having Anita as a midfielder anchorman alongside Hayden, god I hope not, remember the start of last season, him and Colback, dear me, Anita has surprised me as I am a big get Anita out of the club fan, but as a fullback I have been pleasantly surprised as he has looked very good, but think back to the start of the season when we still had Janmaat and Anita was midfield, please, please, please never let him play in midfield again, as a fullback in a side that dominates, yes he is okay, nothing special but okay.

Haidara is not a Rafa type of FB, Rafa will get rid as soon as poss, and in fairness to Dummett, not only did he force his way ahead of Haidara he also displaced Santon which is why we sold him, every manager we have had has rated and regularly played Dummett due to his ability to stop dangerous wingers, granted Pardew, Carver and McClaren may not be the best managers in the world but Rafa is and Rafa has signed a left back of his own choice yet he still picks Dummett, so why is that ?

The truth is, as I see it, Dummett is a really good left back and Rafa knows this, but he was concerned about the back up if Dummett couldn’t play, Colback has played there, as has Clark, Haidara is dreadful so in comes Lazaar, by all accounts a good FB but not quite good enough to displace the very good Dummett, if I’m wrong then you must tell Rafa as he seems to agree with me, and Rafa agrees with me to such an extent that he made Dummett captain in Lascellas absence, does that really sound like he is a player who’s replacement is within the squad.

There is some attempt at method to the madness. If Gayle were capable of playing in the hole, or on the left, that would allow Mitro and Murph more of a look in, and Diame to compete further back where he seems more suited. He also I think would tuck inside if playing on the left, as Gouufran does, giving Lazzaar or Haidarra license to bomb on down the left as Yedlin does on the other side. I think if Gayle can play in more than one position, as he seems capable, then we might make better use of the entire squad, and Preston in the Cup seems a good chance to try it.

Dummet is not a really good LB he is bang average at best. There are 37 welsh footballers most of them plying their trade in the lower leagues and he cant make the starting eleven. He will be sold when we get to the PL or rotated as much as Hanley.
