Newcastle Crush Preston 6-0 In Front Of 49,000 Fans

Newcastle have crushed Preston North End tonight at St. James’ Park after we had gone 1-0 up through a nice goal from Mitrovic after 19 minutes but then a blatant elbow by Browne on Colback eight minutes later had the referee hand out  straight red card and Preston were down to 10 men – it was no contest after that.

Jack had a cut on his face and was replaced by Jonjo Shelvey.

Diame got a second goal after 37 minutes – his first for Newcastle – and it was 2-0 at half time but then Newcastle overwhelmed Preston in the second half.

Aleksandar Mitrovic after scoring first goal

Matt Ritchie was brought down in the box and he scored from the penalty after 53 minutes to make it 3-0 and then two minutes later it  was Mitro again with a cool finish to make it 4-0.

Preston held out until the 87th minute when Mo Diame got his second goal of the evening and then substitute Ayoze scored in stoppage time to make it a grand 6-0 win.

And Christian Atsu hit the bar twice and was unlucky not to get on the score-sheet.

So we have made it though to the quarter finals of the EFL Cup in front of over 49,000 fans and that’s our 15th win in the last 17 games in all competitions.

Newcastle are red-hot at the moment – but we must repeat this win at Deepdale on Saturday – we cannot be over-confident.

We’ll have a fuller report of the game coming out later.

Firebug – like the thinking. ( Gayle and Mitro ) Maybe Rafa’s had that in mind all along , just biding his time until Mitro was fit and ramped up to go. Looks like he is now, so pairing him with Gayle , Ritchie , Perez and Atsu will scare the sh@t out of most teams .

I think Rafa was having a little experiment sticking Anita on at LB, don’t be surprised to see him start there at some point. Didn’t have a lot of defending to do as it happened.

Yeah Sels could have gone off for a cup of tea, but what he had to do he done well. Looked a lot more commanding in the box.

Atsu, Hayden and Ritchie played particularly well.

Mitrovic for sheer perseverance and work rate although Atsu terrified the life out of them and Shelvey pulled all the strings with effortless style. Diame is a mixed bag but his plusses far outweigh the minuses.

The draw will take place on Wednesday 26th October, following the conclusion of the juicy-looking Manchester United vs Manchester City tie that evening. That game kicks off at 8pm, so we’re looking at a 10pm-ish time, unless we see extra time.

I like the look of Atsu, has pace and a trick.

Wonder what he will cost us if we decide to keep him ?

EGB I thought Sels did particularly well, not easy to keep concentration when you only sporadically have any thing come at you. Fine save at the end.

Hayden for me was outstanding and took Yedlins ball to the nads very well

Mitro will get it though no doubt and I cant argue too much he was very good barring the whole pen thing

Tbh I think everyone looked good

No votes for Shelvey, that’s why I find this voting system a bit annoying, he controlled the mid field again and some of his passes were sublime.

I did vote for Mitro however so a lot of worthy players tonight won’t get any or many votes.

Bambams, I think we’ll be the making of Atsu. I don’t think he’ll stay if a prem club come calling, even if we get promoted though.

I would be happy with that fee. Not the finished article but with Rafa (who walks on water at the minute) coaching him could be some player.

Atsu looked the player we thought Aarons was going to be, he could have had a couple as well, I hope he starts Saturday.

On this showing he’d be cheap at £10m

I think Atsu will be staying, Newcastle will most likely take the buy option, and working with Rafa will be the draw for him.

You know I guessed Shelvey wouldn’t get many votes even though he was imperiously outstanding. Someone said the other day he has no business plying his trade in this league and that’s a spot on for me. His problem is he makes it look all too easy. Our midfield dominance and their fatigue was virtually all down to his distribution and until he went off, Ritchies incision.

Well that was a fun way to spend a Tuesday evening! If the boys can build on that without getting over-confident the future looks bright. I thought Hayden was brilliant in the midfield, Yedlin’s pace was just too much for their defence, and how Atsu didn’t score is still a mystery. Not sure what that lad has to do to get a goal! All in all, a very good performance (except for Diame’s miss which I think we should just forget about). HOWAY THE LADS!!!

I cannot see how any player will want to leave us at the moment.

Obviously if a ‘top 4’ team come calling but this momentum is so reminiscent of the early 90’s …..

I have not been so optimistic for years.

Let’s hope we can build something and fat Mike doesn’t just try and flog the whole team at the end of the season £££££££€€

I understood the Atsu deal was already done if we choose to buy otherwise he goes back to Chelsea .
The fee I thought had been agreed as part of the loan arrangement but I may be wrong

What a steal Hayden looks, the lads got everything, Hayden, Mitro and Atsu best players on the park for me but to be fair everyone played an 8 plus, not seen us tear a team to ribbons like that in a while at home, we’ve got too many good players ? Never thought I’d be saying that when we got relegated

atsu seems to be improving with games, needs a little work on delivery but his pace, tricks and attempts at goal cant be knocked……just seen the mitro dance and song…..he must be buzzin…got his own song and crowd singing along….could be the making of him..if he keeps that work rate up.

I really do hope Atsu stays. He seems to be acquiring the taste for blood in this league. With a good run in the side I think he could be a top player in the last half of the Season if tonight’s anything to go by.
