Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez was his usual calm and collected self after the 6-0 hammering of Preston last night at a packed St. James’ Park aided by the sending off of Alan Browne after 27 minutes after a nasty challenge on Jack Colback.
We are now through to the last eight of the League Cup with Arsenal, Liverpool, Leeds and Hull being the other clubs to advance last night.
Rafa Benitez consoling Jack Colback last night
We will know our fate after the three remaining fixtures complete tonight when the draw is made.
But Rafa will not be drawn on whether there could even be some Cup glory for Newcastle this season for the first time since way back in 1969 when I was even young.
I have a hunch we could get Arsenal – but we’ll see.
Newcastle boss Benitez will get back to business today preparing for the game at Deepdale on Saturday where we need all 3 points.
He was asked is we can go further in the League Cup this season and even win the thing:
“I have to concentrate just on Preston on Saturday, wait and see what happens in the draw and after, maybe I can answer those questions.”
“Preston will try to amend the situation, they will try to change things, we will be playing away, so it will be totally different.”
“It’s another competition, so we have to enjoy it. Normally I say one or two days and after, concentrate on the next game. It will be tough, for sure.”
“We have three or four players who have not been playing too many games. They come in and they play at this level, it can only be positive for the team and the future.”
“I’m really pleased to see Mitrovic, Diame, Christian Atsu, or even DeAndre Yedlin. There were a lot of positives.”
It says something about our squad when we can make 7 changes to the side from Saturday and still play like this and the commentators on beIN Sports yesterday thought Newcastle could go all the way this season in the League Cup.
The score could have been even higher with Christian Atsu twice hitting the post and Mo Diame missing an absolute sitter in the first half after he had been brilliantly set up by the outstanding Aleksandar Mitrovic.
We must win the game on Saturday at Deepdale for our 7th win in a row and we will have won every one of our six games in October.
