Newcastle are likely to bring a few players in during the January transfer window but the way things are going it will not necessarily be to assist in the promotion push, which has gone very well since we lost our first two games at Fulham and at home to Huddersfield.
In fact in the league we have played 12 games since then and won 10 of them with a points haul of 31 and a goal difference of +21 – which is not too bad.
Add to that three EFL cup ties we have won at home, scoring 10 goals and conceding none and it’s been quite a good run after the initial stumble.
Christian Atsu – been in good form for Newcastle
Here’s the league table as it stands at the moment before we play Preston at Deepdale on Saturday afternoon.
Newcastle have been linked with a number of top youngsters we may want to bring in during the January window and they include 19 year-old Partizan Belgrade defender Nikola Milenkovic, Sunderland’s 17 year-old whiz kid Joel Asoro and 19 year-old Anderlecht central midfielder Youri Tielemans.
We’ve also been linked with players we didn’t get in last summer like Brentford play-make Alan Judge, but the high likelihood is the player we will sign first in January is Christian Atsu, who is on loan at Newcastle for the season from Chelsea.
Christian has looked the part on the right wing and both Christian and Matt Ritchie started the game last night so both of them can play in the team together and both are gifted wingers who can score goals.
We’re not sure how much Christian would cost – he was a £3.5M Chelsea signing from Porto three years ago – but it will be in the loan contract.
It wouldn’t surprise us at all if Rafa has seen enough of the 42 times capped Ghanaian International and signs him up.
Of course in January Christian, Mo Diame, Achraf Lazaar, Chancel Mbemba and possibly Cheick Tiote will be playing in the African Cup of Nations in Gabon.
But our strength in depth will allow other players to come in and play in the first team while the African players are away, such is the real depth of the squad that Rafa has assembled.
We would be very pleased if Rafa signs Christian in January – he’s a very good player and seems to love life at Newcastle.
He’s a canny lad.
