Chelsea Want To Sign Top Young Newcastle Defender – No Chance

There is a  report out today that new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte wants to sign Newcastle centre-half and captain Jamaal Lascelles.

The Sun are reporting that Chelsea are looking to bid £18M for the very talented young English defender.

We are not surprised that Jamaal is catching the eye of some top clubs, because not only has he been a great captain this season for the Magpies, but he continues to get better and better under the guidance of world-class manager Rafa Benitez.

And Newcastle are doing very well in the Championship thank you very much – and are 3 points clear at the top of the league.

It seems that Chelsea are changing their direction from recent years and now looking for English players (well would you believe it) to stock up on their homegrown players.

Their scouts have been checking up on Jamaal’s performances for Newcastle this season and they have been impressed, but that’s hardly surprising.

22 year-old Jamaal Lascelles has appeared 17 times with one goal for Newcastle this season and has been one of our best performing players ever since Rafa arrived on Tyneside on March 13th.

One of his first actions was to bring the young defender into the first team after former manager Steve McClaren kept with then captain Fabricio Coloccini and newly signed Chancel Mbemba.

Steve didn’t give much playing time at all to the former Nottingham Forest center-back.

But there’s no way Rafa would let his captain leave the club now and why would Jamaal ever want to join Chelsea?

It looks like Newcastle could be going places with Rafa in total charge of all football matters at a revitalized Newcastle United?

We have now won 14 of our last 16 games and get 52,000 sell outs at St James’ Park and we are in the second division!

There’s just no way Jamaal will be leaving Newcastle for any other club any time soon.

Comments welcome.

Let them crying. Looser has always excuses why he lost and he was better and bla bla bla. But what is important is final score, we find a way to win there and no matter how, we have 3 points. I know we can play better, but we cannot expect to win every match 3:0, these wins with +1 goal are as important as 6:0, or even more. We have to win as many as we can to be prepared for cup games, because I think Rafa likes cups ?

From previous, yes the defence is still suspect, that’s because the world class commanding CB and attack minded solid defending LB that we need aren’t prepared to play in the Championship. I think we will make four quality signings in the summer to ensure a top ten finish and CB, LB will be two of them.

I’d love to read that contract Rafa signed, is he allowed to knock back 18M for the 2M signing Lascelles.

In just nine Championship starts and two substitute appearances Matt Ritchie has picked up four bookings – against Huddersfield, Brighton, Wolves and Norwich.

    PNE makes five.

If that type of headline emerged in the past we would fear the worst, would Lascelles want to leave?

£18 Millions for an up and coming young English center back? Remind me how much John Stones went for? Double it. Not what they’re worth but what you have to pay for them.

BandB. With NUFC sat at the top of the table, my anti-regime, anti-Benitez ammunition looks like blanks.

Why on earth would you be anti Benitez.

    Old news.

They were showing interest over 12 months ago. Lascelles was, at the time, training with the full England squad under Hodgson

the bottom line with these things is always: can get someone as good/ better for the money we’d get for him. I don’t think we can; £18m isn’t that much these days. If stones goes for £50m, then lascelles is at least £30m, but he’s the future of newcastle united, so in my view is priceless

‘and why would Jamaal ever want to join Chelsea?’

Other than more money and playing in the Premiership and Champions League and possibly England.

There were many on this blog that criticized the club at the time for buying Championship players Lascelles and Darlow. Funny how times have changed.

My MOTM was Darlow. He brings a confidence to the back four that Sels never did and consequently they all defend more effectively.

There seems to be a hysterical outburst these days for “penalty appeals”. No such thing. Either the ref gives a penalty for a deliberate foul, obvious handball or denying a goal scoring opportunity. Haven’t had a close look at the Preston “appeal” but if it’s clear that there’s no goal scoring opportunity then the red called it right.

    Slank,
There were posters who insisted our mid tabling unsuccessful club were just lucky to have KK and SBR and couldn’t attract a top class manager. Do you remember that?

    RE NUFC defense

I love the way some rare poster comes on here makes a sweeping generalisation and everybody nods their head sagely and agrees with the nonsense.

Our defense looked a bit wobbly towards the end of yesterdays game as Preston threw every thing at us – they held out even though the ref found 11 minutes from somewhere.

We have 3 defenders with Euro experience , Gamez ,Lazaar, and Mbemba out for various reasons at the moment.

We have conceded only 3 goals away from home which is only equalled by Arsenal in the top 4 divisions.

    Stats do not lie

    WW…,
It was a much-changed North End side who made life difficult in an often bruising encounter that saw seven players booked – Matt Ritchie’s yellow meaning he is now suspended for the visit of Cardiff.

Lascelles for 18mill? Can’t see us accepting it nor Chelsea offering it they will have better in mind…has come from one of the worst papers on these shores though so makes sense

Wouldn’t be a bad deal for us though I like Lascelles a lot but he is a limited CB brilliant character however which is harder to replace admittedly

Ando said on the radio yesterday that we looked shaky on set pieces and lack that solid centre back who could command the area. But what does he know, another footy know nowt.

I wouldn’t say we were lucky to get KK and Sir Bobby.

KK was a move of desperation as he had little or no coaching and managerial experience. I suspect Sir Bobby didn’t take much convincing to return to his roots.

Getting Benetez was a brilliant piece of enticement (entrapment even !) not only by the club but also by the fans. They both deserve huge credit.

I suspect that having experienced the Liverpool adulation and culture surrounding the club and city he possibly felt more ‘at home’ with Newcastle which is not too dissimilar to Liverpool, trophies aside.

I think a couple of Ritchie’s booking were for dissent , which is disappointing. Bookings are unavoidable but bookings for dissent are.

With only us and Arsenal on 3 goals conceded away from home suggests our defenCe must be doing something right.

Oh things have turned around for the best since May 2016. In just five months the turn around at our club is nothing short of spectacular. The change at Newcastle was always about ambition, raising the sights of the club for better management, players and crucially, an owner who could change his ways and it’s so far, so good. My thoughts have turned (from our relegation in May 16) to our prospective promotion in May 17 and the now infamous flying message from Sunderland fans gloating over our demise. No need to say anymore about what goes around, comes around as far as they are concerned and the despicable way they treated Newcastle and the supporters. No doubt we’ll see what comes around for those nasty minded individuals, but the current on pitch performance by their players leaves them pretty much up sh-t creek. Oh how things change. Howay the Lads !!

Interesting piece of news if accurate.

It will certainly give the fans a better insight into the thinking of Mr Ashley. Will he jump at the chance of making a HUGE profit by cashing in on Lascelles even before promotion is assured?

Also, if he decides to let him go in the summer, will he give Rafa cash to strengthen the squad further.

    Only time will tell.
