If it’s one position we think Newcastle are very strong in at the moment then it’s goalkeeper with Karl Darlow, Matz Sels and Rob Elliott all pushing to be the number one goalkeeper this season.
So it’s a little bit of a surprise to read this morning in The Sun that Newcastle are interested in signing 22 year-old Swindon Town goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.
The 6ft 5ins goalkeeper of Chilean descent was born in London and initially was on Tottenham’s books before moving to Liverpool in 2014 and then he eventually moved to Swindon Town in the summer after being on loan at the Robins for all of last season.
Swindon Town goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux
Lawrence has been in very good form this season for the League One club and the report is that both Norwich City and Newcastle United are interested in signing the player.
Vigouroux is eligible to play for England through birth and for both Chile and Jamaica through his parents.
But Vigouroux has already pledged his allegiance to Chile and has been involved in Chilean training camps and was part of the 2013 South American Youth Championship and has played for various Chile Youth sides.
One of his goals is to represent Chile at the senior level.
The Sun is reporting Newcastle see him as a goalkeeper with the potential to take the step up to the Premier League, if we get promoted from the Championship this season.
One potential negative with the player is his temperament and professionalism.
Last season his loan for the season was cut short in September, after he turned up late for training.
For that offense he was fined £50 and decided to pay the fine with 5,000 individual pennies – smart Alec.
The loan was back on after he apologized, but it’s a consideration for any club interested in signing him.
It seems that goalkeeper is very strong at Newcastle at the moment.
