Newcastle Likely To Lose In-Form Midfielder In January

Yoan Gouffran is in the final year of his four year contract at Newcastle and if a suitable offer had come in for him that suited both Yoan and Newcastle in the summer, he would have left the club at that time.

Yoan has since played his best football at Newcastle under new manager Rafa Benitez and the Frenchman works his socks off for the team and has scored 3 great goals for us this season.

The image he now has with the fans has changed dramatically since Rafa arrived and the manager has been able to get the very best out of the 30 year-old.

Yoan Gouffran with Rafa Benitez

Lille were interested in signing Gouffran last January but nothing came of that, but they have remained interested in the player who will be available for a nominal fee at the turn of the year.

There’s news in the Northern Echo today that Lille are now interested in signing the Frenchman in January and it could be that Yoan will leave Newcastle then.

The news is that Lille are willing to offer Gouffran a two and a half year deal.

Gouffran has been a regular starter under Rafa Benitez this season, but with Newcastle looking to be a Premier League club next season we don’t think Rafa will offer Yoan a new deal.

Rafa will want to sign some top players this summer and maybe in January – to further improve the Newcastle squad.

It could be that Rafa will look at what Newcastle’s situation is in January and then decide whether to let the Frenchman leave.

If he did leave we could see Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu starting on the wings for Newcastle – and maybe Atsu will sign on full time at the club in January?

Yoan will also be a free agent in the summer and he could get a very good deal for himself when he would cost nothing in the transfer market.

Rafa does try to look after the interests of the player and it could be left to Yoan – if he wants to accept the Lille offer.

But as we said he could get some excellent offers in the summer as a free agent, especially given he’s a player who has been playing really well for us this season.

We’re sure a number of top Championship clubs would be only too interested in signing him this summer.

It would also depend on his personal situation and whether he wants to return to France to play his football.

What do you think?

I think he’ll get a better deal in the summer after he’s had a blinding season with the champions, if they have a player ready to replace him who is prepared to step down a division and he was on our radar anyway if we made the PL then it could be a good deal for everyone.

Lille aren’t doing very well at the moment. Still, Gouffran should be used to relegation battles!

We have younger midfielders of equivalent standard to Yohan coming through .

When you are 30 you think in months rather than years – a January move would suit all parties and be a good gesture from the club.

The only Lille player worth thinking about in a swap deal for Goofy is Rony Lopes (the new Ronaldo) and he’s on loan from Monaco.

I think you have corrected me before.

For some reason I have always thought Poole and Brighton were just a kick in the arse from each other.

I think it’s because I get Poole mixed up with Hove.

Gouffy has shown he’s an excellent player, those goals were crackers. Think he always had it in him, he was maybe pxxxxxxd.

On the goalie issue: it would appear that he pays a lot of attention to this position, he wants ‘world class’. Thought Krul might be able to step up… The new guy may not reach that level and Darlow Elliott just very good goalies, not tops.

Goofy is most certainly not an excellent player, however he is a hard working pro who has done and will continue to do an excellent job for us while still in the Championship.

Wasn’t so hard working when he stopped trying for us mate and that wasn’t too long ago

I agree he’s doing well enough now but he’s only getting back to where he was when we signed him something which he should of always been imo

we need the squad depth, simple as that. Unless we get enough money to replace him with a long-term option (which is doubtful), then why compromise our team for the sake of, say £1m?
