Rafa Happy With Some Things – Unhappy With Others

Benitez was happy with the character of his players today, but he did not like the fact we had to defend so much in the second half.

Christian Atsu and Yoan Gouffran had put Newcastle comfortably ahead in the first half,  but Newcastle put in a below par second half performance and Peter Whittingham finally scored with a 77th minute goal.

Rafa Benitez and Neil Warnock on the touchline today

There were claims of hand ball before Peter’s goal and Karl Darlow immediately protested the goal, but Cardiff also had a late penalty appeal turned down.

We’ll take the 3 points – thank you very much.

This is what Benitez said after the game:

“We started really well had chances to kill the game, but we gave them some hope and then they put in long throw-ins, long balls and free-kicks.”

“And this is what Championship football is like and you to defend. “They were complaining about some decisions and they were not happy.”

“Watching the replay it is a handball, but we cannot change things.” “I was not happy we had to defend too much.”

“But you have to defend and make sure you prepare the team for these things and we did it today. “

“We have to show character and we did it.”

Newcastle are now 8 points ahead of 3rd placed Huddersfield after today’s results.

Brighton are at Bristol City in the late kick-off game and early in the second half they are 2-0 ahead with goals from Sidwell (13),and Murphy (20) in the first half – so they could be up to 34 points with a win.

The passing moves for our goals were really slick especially Mitrovic showing amazing composure to set up Atsu !

Cardiff’s goal should have been disallowed for handball in the build up but we did let them back into the game by easing off for me we still are missing a few quality additions in midfield to have total control a no 10 or another midfielder of Shelvey’s quality would be nice !

Some of the lads looked a bit tired so the international break has come at a good time for the players who will still be with the club

Ronnie Koeman has to stand there and take it on the chin.
    Chelsea are unplayable.
In the the words of the late great John Lennon ( an Evertonian )
“no one told me there would be days like these ”

In complete control then, again, took the foot off the gas not great but still getting points on the board

Look forward to having Gayle back fully ready to go after the break

Its amazing how Brighton are so far out in 2nd place considering how average we made them look only really Dunk or Knockhaert would get in our team

Right another 3 points and pulling clear of 3rd and chasing pack. So all good.

But to find issue – we should be putting these teams away much easier.
Almost might be better not to get the early goal as it encourages us to sit back. The second half the play looked laboured and once into that style of play it’s difficult to step up again.

First half I thought Hayden was great. Clark also looked cut above. Mitro for first goal was great.

Second half Mitro was walking half hearted back on side after his runs weren’t picked out. Shelvey was too deep quite often covering the centre halfs when they went upfield.
no urgency when we could be pressing and destroying teams.

But as I say another 3 points and in the long run 3 points nearer the ultimate prize of promotion.

Antonio Conte was asked about Cesc Fabregas at his last presser – He said he would consider loaning him out.
He’s only 29 with loads of footy still left in him !

If muppet pardew was in charge, the headline would read pardew over the moon. Players couldn’t have done more.

With benitez, he keeps the players on there feet

    Just got in
    how I saw it
    MISSED COLBACK
without Colback – Shelvey was playing to deep and got deeper as Hayden faded – played like a third centre half today.

Great first five minutes good goal good build up hold up and pass from Mitrovich
THEN – we were poor rest of the half until Goufran scored.
Second half much the same as the first half good first five minutes then poor rest of the game gave Cardiff umpteen chances second half before they scored to get back into the game.

We played to deep – to slow – to square – to much sideways backwards which invited Cardiff onto us.

    My merit marks

Darlow 7 did nowt wrong did what he had to do – unsighted for goal
Yedlin 7 Again good going forward linked up well
Clark 8 Pick of our defenders. defended well – used the ball well
Lascalles 7 defended well but use of ball poor – to slow tends to pass backwards sideways.
Dummett 8 dumbest did as Dummett does well defended well got in some great tackles late in second half when Cardiff were pressing
Goufran 7 took his goal well always involved – team lost shape when he was substituted
Shelvey 7 sprayed the ball around but played to deep to threaten Cardiff
Hayden 6 started well but faded as the game went on
Atsu 7 as above started well took his goal well but gave/lost the ball in dangerous places second half.
Perez 5 Invisible most of the game neve got close to Mitrovich
Mitrovich 8 my MOM ploughed a lone furrow up front isolated to often but had great vision in setting up first goal – constant thorn in Cardiff’s defence.
    Subs
    Anita did ok
Diame did OK brought a bit of urgency up front

If we are talking transfers I would take Michael Carrick at least for rest of this season and first year back in prem ( if we get promotion). He can’t get in Man Utd team (don’t know why) but he is still class.

Yes he would keep his place especially in games like this – battled well up front held up the ball well and his around game improving and his awareness/passes/lay-offs in what is going on around him

OH and the Referee and lines – 2 merit marks one each for allowing our goals to stand the rest of their decisions were woeful and couldn’t keep up with play when we did move the ball quicker

Despite the fact that we should’ve been out of sight before they scored, it was another game where we didn’t play our best but never looked in danger of losing. Sometimes it’s these games that leading clubs slip up on, where despite being by far and away the better side, they relax and get caught out. Once again we did enough to get the points, despite a ref who was below average once again. It was three points we should have picked up and we did. Nicely set up for Leeds.

Thought Dummett and Clark were our best players.
    The refs keep getting worse!
    Was Perez playing?
Why does Lascalles not keep going, like Clark does, when Shelvey gives him the space?
    Gallowgate was quiet!
    Long throws, hoofball = Cardiff.

I agree about Perez. Totally anonymous. I liked this kid, but he is definitely going backwards in my opinion. He’s looking more and more like the fall guy when it comes to us needing to change anything, in my opinion.
