Rafa – We Have What’s Needed To Be A Success In The Championship

Newcastle should have won the game against Cardiff City much easier than we did – and that was because we missed our chances in the first half and early in the second half, otherwise the result would have been clear long before the end.

But it wasn’t and after Cardiff made it 2-1 after 73 minutes after we were 2-0 up at the half and dominating the game, we could have lost 2 points if the south Wales team had managed to equalize late in the game.

That would have been an injustice – but it didn’t happen – and that’s now we have 8 wins on the trot and the first time that’s happened in a long 11 years.

Rafa Benitez on the touchline on Saturday afternoon
Another game – another win

Rafa was matter of fact as usual at the end of the game, but he was happy enough with the character our lads showed in that second half.

And that’s what you need to be  a success in the Championship and our players are showing stacks of character  this season.

That’s unlike last season’s complete and utter nightmare – my arm just started to hurt just thinking about it.

This is what Rafa said after the game:

“It’s better that you can learn your lessons in a winning situation.”

“Everyone knows when you’re 2-0 up, you need that third goal to kill a team off, but we just couldn’t do it.”

“So you have to ensure we have the mentality to defend and get those three points.”

“We didn’t play at the level we wanted in the second half, but we showed character and that’s what you need in the Championship.”

With goal difference taken into account we are now 9 points ahead of 3rd placed Huddersfield in an automatic promotion place and top of the league.

It would be the icing on the cake to go up as champions with record points but we are now eight points clear of a play off place, we’d have to lose three while Huddersfield won those three, our biggest advantage hasn’t even started to kick in properly yet. I just can’t see us not getting promoted.

I see Sterry scored for Coventry today.

I was wondering who we are going to get in the 3rd round.

One of the match commentators just had to mention that one of the teams in action’s home ground is very close to Hereford who beat Newcastle in a cup tie. They really like digging up long buried corpses don’t they.

I don’t think Huddersfield are the main threat anymore.

I said after a few games they’d fall by the wayside and will probably be fighting to escape relegation by the seasons end. I also think Norwich might start to struggle even more.

Apart from Brighton the possible other contenders will be Derby (yes the team managed by McClaren) Leeds and Reading.

I think they’ll all be hard pushed to catch up with us however.

Personally I think we are already promoted, it would be fantastic to get to a final next year, and hopefully avoid the league winners when we get there, Arsenal and Man U in the last two who went on to do the treble.

Derby and Villa could both make the play offs but we are sixteen and seventeen points ahead of them, they’d have to put in record breaking win streaks while we posted a Benitez record lose streak, it’s not going to happen.

20 more wins should just about do it, so we could be promoted with 10 games to spare.

Or is that a bit too optimistic. 🙂

Wow, there’s six points between 17th and sixth.

It would be very nice to break a few records on the way considering we have broken almost every single unwanted one over the last six years.

Shame we couldn’t have gotten a seventh against QPR.

If we continue as we are currently doing we could end up with a ridiculously high positive GD, make up a little for the past few seasons.

Here we go into the international break…
I am already thinking about what Rafa will do about Gayle / Mitro for the Leeds game. I would be tempted to bring back the top scorer. But has Mitro had a fair crack of the whip? His mission is to get a goal or two for his country and stoke up the fans with his ‘I love NUFC…since a boy…my son is a Geordie..’ routine 🙂
