Championship Team Of The Season – So Far

Here’s the @whoscored Championship team of the season so far – just over one third the way through.

And it’s a little surprising we have only two Newcastle players in the side.

In the 2009-2010 season when we were promoted from the Championship with a massive 102 points and were 23 points above 3rd placed Nottingham Forest, we had four players in the Team of the Season announced in May of 2010.

It included Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll.

Kevin was the Championship Player of the Season.

Jail……… Yes OK maybe in the PL Mitro can be brought on to bring a physical presence when a defence is holding firm , a bit like West Ham use Carroll. I think it’s a shame though as he has more technical ability than Carroll but not yet as prolific a goalscorer .

As I said earlier I think he has a lot more to offer than we’ve seen so far but will he get enough chances to show it. You only get better at something by doing it regularly.

Jayphoto……… I think Perez has had enough chances to show some consistency in a specific position . He’s not a kid anymore and we need to replace him with better. We can’t keep too many mights and maybes once we’re promoted.

I agree that Perez had enough chances, he is sometimes very good and sometimes non-existent. I think he is more suited to the EPL than for the Championship, so him, Mitro and Gayle and I think another one will be brought will be our strikeforce next season, maybee Armstrong, depends on how he will perform in Barnsley. For sure we will need one creative midfielder and one winger…maybee Depay and Judge, I would prefer Schneiderlin for next season, he would be great signing I think, but we have solid squad now, we have good 4 GK, we had solid 4 CB, we have RB, LB solved now I think, we will need DM, AM/no.10 position….I would love here player like HBA, he in no. 10 position in this team would be unplayable I think…

    Betty
I gave him MOM on Saturday not only because he led the line well ‘on his own’ and the vision to set up Atsu for first goal…

BUT ….. for keeping his head for 90 minutes plus of niggling nasty little tackles shirt pulling and most likely verbals as.

Hope he is learning to keep his head because in the last two/three games he has shown a lot more maturity and some of his skills he’s got
If RAFA can keep him ‘on the straight and narrow’ then we have a hell of a player on our hands

The problem with Perez is his game relies on tricks & flicks. When they work he looks like a world beater but when they don’t he looks pants. Unfortunately he seems to have more ‘pants’ games ‘world beater’ games!

Charlie…… I hope so too, I really like him but under Rafa’s rotation policy every player has to impress to be included in the next match. Trying too hard to make an impact could prove to be his downfall.

I think Rafa will use this season to see what he has for next season in the prem, he will know who has the potential and who will be leaving before the window opens in the summer.

He did say he was building a squad for the championship, and no doubt will rebuild it for the prem. Plenty of this season left to see players improve, and Rafa’s weekly message is they need to keep improving.

surprised Lascelles isn’t in there! Might be rose tinted goggles perhaps but he’s the best centre back I’ve seen this season!?
Ritchie’s been great, but i’ll accept that Knockaert as been just as good if not slightly more effective!
Tammy Abraham has been playing a lot better than Kodija though, and I’m sure theres been better left wingers than Ayew?

Benitez signed Morientes & Crouch for Liverpool, not exactly the most nimble/mobile strikers at the time. That’s not to say Benitez does not prefer attackers reliant on pace, but there is nothing to say he is adverse to having other styles of stikers, as options for his attack.

To say Mitrovic isn’t a top 8 PL club striker is debatable, why would he be wanted by Roma and now Napoli if that’s the case. Mitrovic, signed as a 20 year old, registered 9 goals in 34 games (often as a sub) in his 1st season.

A look at the top scorers 4th to 8th:

Man City 4th, Top scorers, Aguero (24), Kelechi Iheanacho (8), De Bryne (7).

Man Utd 5th, Top scorers, Martial (11), Rooney (8). Martial with 2 more goals than Mitrovic, playing in a side that completely dominated games.

Southampton 6th, Top scorers, Pelle (11), Mane (10), Long (10). Pelle only 2 more goals than Mitrovic, playing in a side that was set up to gift his goals.

West Ham, 7th, Top scorers, Andy Carroll (9) and Payet (9).

Liverpool, 8th, Top scorers, Firmino (11), Benteke (9), Sturridge (8).

Mitrovic (*note* looks to be improving on last season) not top 8 PL quality?

I can’t see any reason why the present 1st team squad wouldn’t be able to step up to the EPL.

Many of them already have EPL experience and under Rafa (all hail him) they were starting to show very good form prior to relegation.

I reckon Darlow, Shelvey, Colback, Lascelles ad Gayle could easily step up and play for England now without disgracing themselves. Many of the rest of the squad are already full internationals for their respective countries. So we have quality already even if there wasn’t a foray into the transfer market.

There obviously will be new additions but we don’t need to be mentally downgrading what we have already.

As for AC he actually had bags of technical ability but that was overlooked as he was so good in the air, I’d have a fit AC back tomorrow although he is eyeing up a big pay day from China.

The team as a whole had so little chances and lost so many games that when Mitro missed a chance it invaribly cost us the game, that was huge pressure for a young lad in a brand new league. Charlie Austen had about ten shots against Hull the other day, Mitro did not have that luxury, he didn’t to bad to be honest.

Mitros actually pretty poor in the air when competing! Compared to carroll who is the best aerial attacker of a ball I;ve seen since big Dunc!
What Mitro is very very good at is taking the ball down and holding it up! For me theres no comparison with Carroll to be had!
Got a buddy that did PT at the toon under allardyce, said Carroll was the worst trainer he’s ever seen. Joey Barton echoed this in his book! Mitrovic on the other hand despite the reputation is a professional trainer. Worked hard to adapt to what benitez wanted in the summer and has drive and determination!
The difference between Mitro and Carroll is that Carroll is a throw back to the old fashioned English centre forward. Mitro is representative of a modern day European striker. Think Napoli and Roma like him because he’d probably score a bucket load in Italy as it’s slower and more technical! His hold up play and in the box movement would be lethal when not being played in a match that’s 100 miles an hour

@wwsbrd – The best thing about Newcastle today, is that I’ve just said I think Lascelles is the best CB in the league, and you’ve replied he’s not even the best CB at Newcastle and I honestly don’t know if you’re referring to Mbemba or Clark because both have been excellent! Really do have a strong squad this year

Looking ahead Rafa has an interesting decision for the Leeds game.

Does he start with Mitro to soften up Leeds who will play hardball and try to get to Mitro to react with all the consequences that might have and then bring on Gayle with fresh legs to run them ragged.

Or does he start with Gayle who will be hungry for goals again and then bring on Mitro to keep them occupied at the back and to assist the defence later on.

    Who’d be a Manager ? Rafa clearly !

I’d start Gayle every single time the lad is fit! Runs defences ragged with his running in behind and into the channels meaning they sit deep which creates huge chunks of space for shelvey and Diame!
Only question is, do you play mitro alongside gayle, rather than instead. Personally I think they look like they’d compliment each other, but then I’m not sure shelvey can play in a 2 man central midfield and be effective/not a liability and in our current system (which has won like a 100 games in a row or something) he’s our best player

    On the squad thingy.

While he has been building a team for the championship this team would not be embarrased in the PL.

Not a top team but certainly midtable. Again I think this season will prove to be good for us to get rid of deadwood, a cleansing of the elephants in the room (Wijnaldum) and riddance of the holy cows (Colloccini, Sissoko, Taylor, our Senegalese friend etc)

Still, with Rafa onboard from December last year when McClaren should have been relieved of his duties, we would be in the top 8 in the PL at the moment.

As you say Rafa’s (all hail him) choice is going to be interesting for the Leeds game.

I have a feeling he’ll have Anita and Colback back in to strengthen up the defense and wouldn’t be surprised if he plays Ritchie and Atzu with Perez dropping out.

I think there’s going to be no Rafa (all hail him) bingo winners for the game. 🙂

Swansea could save face by giving Bradley their womens soccer team job. He’d be more comfortable, everyone in America, the only place anyone’s heard of him would think that’s what he’d gone over to do anyway and they could give the job to Jones.

There’s a few Jones’s in Wales did you have one in particular in mind.

For what it’s worth I think Bradley will do enough to keep them up.

I really fancy CP and Leicester being in the hat for the drop.
