Newcastle Face Competition For This Player In January

Newcastle have recently been linked with 24 year-old Irish winger Daryl Horgan, who plays for Dundalk in the League of Ireland Premier Division and this lad has been catching the attention of a number of clubs during Dundalk’s Europa League run.

The news broke on Saturday that Daryl is on the radar screen of Rafa Benitez, who is said to want to get him to Newcastle as early as next month.

Since Horgan’s contract with Dundalk runs out in early December Newcastle could sign him as a free agent.

Aston Villa are another club said to be interested in the winger along with three other Championship clubs Ipswich, Reading and Preston North End.

But Rafa will only bring the player to the club if he thinks he can perform well in the Premier League with it looking likely that Newcastle can get straight back up this season.

Newcastle scouts have been watching the player and will continue to watch him, although they seem to be have been very impressed with the player, according to reports.

The PFAI Player of the Year has been included in the Republic of Ireland provisional squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Austria.

He has played for the Ireland U-21 side once but never for the full side – so he may get his first cap this week.

That could be a game to watch.

Here’s some information on Horgan.

========

Horgan started his career with Salthill Devon back in 2010 and moved to Sligo Rovers the next year before moving on loan to Cork City.

He joined Cork on a permanent basis in 2012 and stayed there for a couple of years before joining Dundalk in December of 2014 on a two year deal.

He appeared in all six of Dundalk’s UEFA Champions League qualifying games in 2016 as they became the first ever Irish side to reach the play-off round.

========

Horgan is considered the best player playing in Ireland at the moment, although he would still be a surprise signing for Newcastle.

Rafa Benitez is likely to make several signings in January and this winger could be one of them to further fortify the squad.

That’s not only for the promotion effort this seaosn but also for next season too, when hopefully we will be in the Premier League and back from the wilderness.

    @Jail – I reckon Gayle with the right support could go onto be a decent premier league striker! He looks as good as Wilson and Gray looked at this level and both seem at home in the premier league! Good pace, good finisher etc
    Interested to see what Rafa does when we’re premier league… He’s mainly bought English with knowledge of the league so far but I don’t think we’ll be afforded that luxury in the premier league as English and/or premier league proven is extortionate!

    Strikers with potential to become top PL forwards are likely to join promotion candidates.

    I think the transfer business in January will be done very much like it was in the summer, we won’t know much about it until they’re spotted in the airport in a ridiculously expensive leather jacket and sunglasses.

    Could be a possible replacement for Gouffy if he leaves in January.
    Jail – it’s all very well saying hang on to Gouffran until the Summer but if gets a good offer in January and has his heart set on leaving then what’s the point of hanging on to a player who doesn’t want to be here anymore?

    You got that question wrong to Hibbit, he was correcting me in regard to comparing our current strikers to being PL quality.

    Gayle has the potential to be a Les Ferdinand / there abouts player…and I sure hope he does.

    Jayphoto,
    I think Mitro is going to be a top top player as well. We need four top quality players in the summer to cement our place and have a real go in the cups, it is progression from there. I think Armstrongs next move should be at a Championship club serious about promotion. If he doesn’t interest a Derby, Villa or Reading how is he going to be a success with us.

    martoon,
    Because he’ll want a Championship winners medal and he is so filthy rich he can afford to gamble that he’ll get an even better deal in the summer.

    Wouldn’t mind us taking a look at a couple of the Chelsea lads in the summer to be honest. Tamy Abraham has really impressed me at Bristol City, and Izzy Brown at Rotherham has looked like a player in the making! Can’t see either breaking through at Chelsea!
    Been really impressed by Atsu, seems a good character too! Chelsea’s reserves and out on loan players are ridiculous!

    I think Benitez’s position on the suitability of this Squad to achieve it’s Championship aims was crystal clear. It appears to be admirably capable of achieving promotion at a reasonably comfortable pace.

    While we may all find it heartwarming that Colback, Dummett, Carr, Handley etc are getting plaudits for displaying their suitability to this league and the task in hand, I would be amazed if these players were not suitably stored on a higher shelf or even moved on next term. There should, and I’ve no doubt will, be wholesale changes to ensure this club is not flapping about in the bottom half of the PL by Xmas 2017.

    I really like Mitrovic and I’m sure we haven’t seen the best of him yet but I’m not sure he fits into Rafa’s long term plans. We know that Rafa prefers to play with one fast striker that can run in behind defenders and Gayle is Rafa’s signing who is playing that role.

    Rafa didn’t sign Mitro and I don’t think he would have done. However he must have told him to improve his fitness and mobility which he’s done to good effect so we’ll have to wait and see if he likes enough now to keep him or decides to cash him and buy someone more like Gayle.
