Newcastle Close In On Top Target For January

Newcastle have sent scouts to tonight’s World Cup qualifying game between Ireland and Austria at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, and it would appear we are again interested in our January target Daryl Horgan.

That’s at least what’s being reported by the Austrian media outlet Laola1.

Horgan has yet to make his debut for the Republic of Ireland, so there’s no real guarantee he will play tonight,  but with his excellent form for Dundalk this season in the Europa League,  Ireland manager Martin O’Neill could start him tonight.

Daryl Horgan – Newcastle target

There are a number of other clubs after the 24 year-old, but we’re sure the combination of Rafa Benitez and Newcastle are a big draw and we could well beat other clubs to his signature.

His contract at the Irish club is set to end in December so there is little downside for Newcastle if we can sign him as a free agent.

And a few days ago when asked bout the interest of Newcastle this is what he said:

“I don’t know, really. To be honest with you, I try to stay out of it as much as I possibly can.”

“Look, it’s very easy to say you’re interested; it’s very different to put at offer on the table and at the minute, there are no offers on the table.”

“I’m a Dundalk player, I’m very happy at Dundalk, but as I said, if an offer does come in from somewhere, I’d have to consider it.”

“Especially something like a massive club like Newcastle.”

The Republic of Ireland have some injury problems for tonight’s game with strikers Shane Long  injured along with Newcastle’s Daryl Murphy, which may be more reason to give Horgan a start.

What do you think?

Horgan made the bench but O’Neill had Ireland set up to take a point from away to Austria, so Horgan was never going to get more than a two-minute cameo, if he made any appearance at all. As it turned out, the unexpected bonus of an away win meant Horgan’s national debut was postponed. He looks a far better prospect than Judge, though, not only because he is 3 years younger.
