If the purpose of Newcastle scouts in Vienna tonight was to check out Daryl Horgan in the Austria vs Republic of Ireland game then they left disappointed with Horgan an unused substitute who still has to make hos first appearance for his country.
Of course there could have been some other players Newcastle were watching, but the news over the last couple of weeks has been that Rafa Benitez is keen on signing the 24 year-old Dundalk player.
James McClean after scoring vital winner
Ciaran Clark had a good game for Ireland at the back and looked composed throughout the game.
In the first half when Austria hit the cross-bar the Newcastle center-back made a critical clearance and this lad certainly looks a very good player under the coaching of Rafa Benitez.
Ireland won the game with a goas from former Sunderland winger McClean in the second half, when he broke well down the left and hit the ball home from a narrow angle as it went through the legs of the goalkeeper.
As the game drew to a close there was more and more pressure from Austria but Ireland defended well.
The home side however missed an excellent opportunity to equalize in the last minute of the four minutes of stoppage time, when Janko somehow headed wide from only three yards out.
It was a great win by Ireland and the first time they have beaten Austria for 53 years.
Ireland currently head Group D with 10 points from their four games so far, but Wales have to take on Serbia tonight in less than an hour in Cardiff.
And we wonder if it was indeed a wasted journey for the Newcastle scouts?
