Newcastle In Move To Sign Talented Nigerian In January

Newcastle are interested in signing 19 year-old Nigerian International Wilfred Ndidi who plays for Genk  and he is said to be rated at £8M.

The news is in the Chronicle today, but we were linked with this player last month as a possible target.

Newcastle scouts were then reported in Belgium in early October checking out the Genk vs Sassuolo Europa League tie, which the home side won 3-1.

The teenager is a versatile player who can also play at center-back, full-back or in defensive midfield, but last month the fee was said to be around £5M.

Hamburg bid that amount for him in the summer and it was turned down, so the estimate is we may have to pay as much as £8M for him in January.

A development is that he will qualify for a Belgian passport soon.

Ndidi signed for Genk a year last January from Nathaniel Boys of Lagos in his native Nigeria and he made his debut for Genk on 31st January last year at Charleroi.

Since then he has played 67 times for Genk with 4 goals and he has already made 2 appearances for the full Nigerian National side.

This season he has played 25 games with two goals in all competitions for his Belgium club.

Premier League clubs like Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham and Middlesbrough were reported to be interested in the player over the summer and now it seems that Newcastle are interested in signing him.

Sources in Belgium say that Newcastle have watched the player several times this season and the news is that Newcastle want him in January.

He fits the profile of players Rafa would like to sign at Newcastle – top young players who have shown potential  and can improve under the coaching of the world-class manager.

Wilfried is also a player who could play well in the Premier League for us and he has speed and considerable skill on the ball.
