The Chronicle Live are reporting today that Newcastle are interested in two Leeds United players who will probably play against us on Sunday – they are 18 year-old midfielder Ronaldo Vieira and 23 year-old left back Charlie Taylor.
We were interested in Taylor last summer and apparently tried to sign the 23 year-old at that time, but we have never been linked with teenager Vieira, who once played for Whitley Bay Boys Club.
The report is that we have been watching the two players all season.
Charlie Taylor – Leeds United left back
In the summer Charlie Taylor was interesting a number of Premier League clubs including West Ham, West Brom and Middlesbrough in addition to Newcastle – and he’s been an ever present for Leeds United this season and played twice for the England U-19 side.
Paul Dummett, Achraf Lazaar and Massadio Haidara are the three senior left backs we have at the moment at the club, but Rafa Benitez is always trying to raise the standards and competition for places in every position at Newcastle.
And Haidara doesn’t seem to have much of a future at Newcastle and could be sold in the summer.
Ronaldo Vieira – shown above – is an 18 year old midfielder who was born in Guinea-Bissau but raised in Portugal, where he signed on for the S.L. Benfica Academy.
He left Portugal in 2011 with his family in search of a football career in England and began playing football in England for Whitley Bay Boys Club.
He then moved to Yorkshire and played 2 seasons in the Huddersfield Junior Football league for Batley Phoenix.
He joined Leeds United on trial only in September of last year, and then signed for the Academy after doing well in his trial.
So here’s a player who has escaped the Newcastle net, but he is young and very skilled player and he seems to have made rapid progress at Leeds.
Vieira was named on the bench for Leeds last May in a game against Preston North End, and he made his debut in the same game coming on as a substitute.
He has now played 14 times for the Leeds United first team.
Ronaldo made his first ever start for Leeds on the opening day of this season starting the game against QPR in a 3-0 defeat.
So here are two more players we seem to be interested in, although we have been linked with Charlie Taylor in the past.
In each of the upcoming two transfer windows Rafa will be looking at the squad and determining the areas in which players can be brought in to improve the squad.
When he does that we could also see players leaving Newcastle.
