Newcastle are averaging over 50,000 fans at St. James’ Park this season for our home league games – when we are in the second division.
And Chris Hughton knows all about the passion of the Newcastle fans, having been a coach at Newcastle from February of 2008 through the end of 2010, with the last 18 months being spent as the manager.
In that time he famously got Newcastle promoted from the Championship with a fabulous 30 wins and 102 points in the 2009-2010 season.

Chris has been on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show today and this is some of what he had to say about Newcastle:
“Newcastle at the moment, I think it’s brilliant, to see them getting 50,000 in this division,”
“It’s a tough division and you have to approach this division knowing that you can lose every game.”
Ever since Rafa Benitez arrived at the club on Friday, March 11th, the fans have been upbeat as they can see a much better future ahead with a world-class manager in charge of all football affairs at the club.
We haven’t had a really good team since Sir Bobby Robson left the club back in August of 2004 and we’ve limped along for 12 long years.
But that’s all changed with Rafa.
His expertise and experience have had an immediate impact at the club – and that’s one of the major reasons the fans are turning out in their numbers again.
Long may that continue.
