It was Sir Bobby Robson’s home debut as the Newcastle manager and we were bottom of the league and Sheffield Wednesday who were the visitors that day to St. James’ Park on September 19th, 1999 were second bottom.
It was the proverbial 6 pointer so early in the season.
Newcastle were bottom with just 1 point from the first 7 games and Ruud Gullit had been fired after the 2-1 home defeat by Sunderland – and he had dropped Alan Shearer for that game.
Sir Bobby Robson – Newcastle manager
Bobby had been appointed and his first game was at Chelsea where we looked solid but lost that game 1-0.
Against Sheffield Wednesday Bobby Robson had the Newcastle players inspired and we were 4-0 up at half time and Alan Shearer scored three in that exhilarating first half and ended up scoring 5 goals in the 8-0 rout.
Aaron Hughes, Kieron Dyer and Gary Speed got the other goals and two of Alan’s goals were penalties.
And that game has been named by the Daily Mail as the 27th best Premier League game in history.
After the game Bobby famously made this comment:
“Well, we got nine and you can’t score more than that.”
Here’s all 8 goals and an interview with Bobby Robson and Alan Shearer after the game.
