Former Players Respond To Newcastle’s Fantastic Run

A few of our former players took to Twitter yesterday after our great 2-0 win at Elland Road.

With nine wins on the trot, Rafa Benitez now has the chance of becoming the first Newcastle manager ever in our long 124 year history to register 10 wins in a row.

Blackburn Rovers are the visitors next Saturday afternoon and fans will want to be there in case history is made – another sell-out at St. James’ Park?

Rafa Benitez – a record breaker next Saturday?

And of course Alan Shearer’s tweet praising Dwight Gayle, which we put out after the game.

Wonder when Rafa’s going to give Alan some kind of part-time role at Newcastle – probably in the summer?

“Since drawing at Aston Villa in late September, United have won eight consecutive Championship games.
There is still some way to go before equalling the 13 straight league wins under Keegan over two seasons between April and October 1992.

“Victory equalled the club all-time league and cup record of nine wins in a row, set by Kevin Keegan’s side in 1994.

“Rafa’s side secured their fourth successive away win, still some distance off the record number of six that Newcastle recorded during 1992.”

See talk of signings over the last few threads.

It’s unbelievable how little some have learnt. Suggestions of wholesale changes if we make the PL, ‘marquee’ signings and the like.

Could write what these types know about football on a post-it note, a nano sized one.

Come January, currently there’s only reason to buy a LW, due to Aaron’s injury and the fact Atsu will be away on ACON duty, plus Gouffran likely leaving at the end of the season. If the requisite quality is available that’s where I see us making a move.

Possibly an additional CM playmaker, to give Shelvey competition and some down time. He may have improved his fitness a lot, but even those accustomed to the Championship and all the fixtures that come with suffer from burnout, as Hayden noted in an interview about last season with Hull.

    from the chronicle

“Can’t wait for that time in 20 years when sitting in a pub we say ‘Remember when Palace paid us for Pardew and Spurs paid for Sissoko?’

folk are doing it now LOL

U don’t want signings when we are promoted? Come Jan I agree we will need a winger without doubt and imo a number 10 and we will easily watch the rest of the season go by but come PL there’s plenty work to be done

Today’s Chronic says Rafa could beat KK’s record on Boxing Day, and the match will be televised. It would be amazing if it happened!

@Hail – theres definitely a few areas we’ll need to improve in the premier league!
At the moment, we probably could do with a true #10 and a left winger for January.
In the summer, I think we’ll be a few down? Pretty sure anita and gouffrans contracts are up? Kruls too I think?
I’d probably say if I was being analytical that we lack premier league class in a few positions…
    Left back.
Centre mid alongside shelvey. (For me, Haydens young, colback isn’t good enough.)
    Left wing.
Possibly another striker. Gayle and Mitro did ok in premier league spells, but just ok. Can’t be fooled by the fact they look a class apart at this level! David Kelly looked like batistuta at this level and was very average at top level. Happens to strikers.
Reckon the club will probably spend about 10-15m in January and a good £50m in the summer. Can only be a good thing

2 in Jan and 4 max in the summer, including Atsu if he continues to do well. No guaranteed starters. No Carr ‘hidden gems’. No ‘marquee’ signings, because that phrase signals trouble and the name of the player blinkering fans.

In Rafa we trust. I’m sure he certainly isn’t thinking wholesale changes. System and team ethic is king for him and he he has trimmed the group to those that buy into that.

Expect Anita will be retained. Rafa likes him a lot and he’s never let us down at RB. Krul signed the extension did he not? I’m not his biggest fan anyway, think he’s gone significantly backwards since about 2011.

LB (Lazaar is still an unknown quantity, I’m sure Rafa is just allowing him to settle, observe and get used to the rough and tumble that can sometimes be English football.)

I agree those are the priority areas.

Guess it all depends on what you expect from our first season should we go up. Some seem to be expecting to immediately challenge for top 6. It can happen, but I’m not expecting it.

Nah, marquee signings makes me think of the Owen, Viduka, more recently Sissoko and Wijnaldum. Unabashed mercenaries. Not players we’ve merely heard of.

I saw some mentioning Sigurdsson for the #10 role. Now he might not be a lazy twat like those mentioned, but he does have a reputation above his talent and we can no longer be a rehab for senior players who have lost their spark or desire for the game. Need to avoid those traps.

Sign players on an established upward curve that don’t have ulterior motives for being here. Sure it’s not beyond the scouting team identify those.

Tbf Owen should of been a good signing but injuries and his attitude ruined that and u cant say Sissoko was a marquee signing he was 1-2 mill

Sig wouldnt be a bad transfer by all accounts but tbh am not sold on him personnally, if we signed Wilshere (who would be considered a marquee signing) I wouldnt be complaining though (fitness allowing obviously). I agree we shouldnt be signing players whove lost their spark but I dont think Rafa will be doing that though Ive no doubt he will get the best he possibly can to come

I would hope for top 12 in our first season and no relegation battle. Think 4-5 players added will be integral though. Hard to judge who or what type of player rafa will sign! My guess based on his past history is 1 or 2 La Liga based with Real Madrid education but to be honest that accounts for about 200 players in la liga.
Our summer signings this season were hugely unpredictable. Can’t remember many on here clamouring for Clark, Yedlin, Ritchie or Gayle before we signed them and they’ve all been excellent, similarly, I’m not sure how many had even heard of Lazaar, Sels, Hayden, Gamez etc
Our squad has so much strength! Summed up by a leeds pundit I heard say when you put the league in perspective, Newcastle have Grant Hanley that can’t make their bench who would probably captain 75% of the clubs at this level…

Hail, I cant agree with that at all. This team would need significant improvement , assuming we got up. And I’m talking up to half the team, if the club is going to thrive in the premier league. As I said at the start of the season, this league aint very good, period. There is a huge difference between our league and the prem.

Regarding possible players to bring I would go for (Summer transfer window):

LB – Charlie Taylor or Andy Robertson
    DM – Nathaniel Chabolah
CM – Will Hughes or Lewis Baker
    LW – Leon Bailey
    AM – Oscar??
    ST – Dominic Solanke
