Hope Fades That Local Lad Will Join Newcastle This Summer

Rafa Benitez seemed to be all set to sign Michael Carrick, the former Wallsend Boys player, in the summer when his contract at the Red Devils was running out at the end of June, but then almost at the last minute Jose Mourinho offered him a new one year deal to keep him at Manchester.

So we had wondered last week if Rafa could possibly try to sign Michael in the summer, when that contract ran out.

Michael Carrick set to be offered new one year deal by Red Devils

Carrick last week even inferred his time could be up at Manchester when he talked to Sky Sports”

“There’s always a chance of that isn’t there?’”

“I’m 35 now and need to be realistic. It is such a great club with great players, you can’t take it for granted and thankfully I’m here this season and playing my part.”

“I’m not going to make predictions about what is going to be happening next season.”

“There is a lot of things to come into the equation, so I’m not going to be making any rash judgments just yet.”

Carrick has been in excellent form for the Red Devils lately and the news in the Mail late today is that Jose Mourinho will offer him a new one year deal to keep him at Manchester United next season.

It seems that Jose has been very impressed with the way Michael has trained and also played over the last few weeks.

And Carrick certainly seems to have settled the side down with his experience and calmness in central midfield.

This is what Jose Mourinho has said about Michael in the Mail:

“We have a good understanding. We know when he can play.” “We know when he is ready and when he needs a rest.”

“I am still having Michael Carrick and probably for one more season. Michael is 35 years old. It is very sad to know that time flies for every one of us.”

“He is such a fantastic player and it is a pity instead of being his manager when he was 25,  I am his manager when he is 35. I always loved him.”

Michael Carrick has had a great career and he’s been a fantastic player – it’s just a pity it couldn’t have been with his home town club.

Not much chance now that we can sign him in the summer.

I’d like to see Rafa go for Fabregas next season if we go up.

Martoon (from a couple of threads back)

You’re right about Gowling playing with SuperMac.

MacDonanald was with us from 1971-1976 and Gowling 1975-78.

With apologies to Jib for treading on his turf and using the web for information.

Carrick would be very good signing, he will be back up or used in important matches, but he would be useful addition. Buy Carrick, Atsu, one more winger and striker…maybee Knockaert…striker/forward should be Lacazette/Driussi…maybe we can gamble on Driussi, he looks like real deal…

I think we will have the recruitment nouse and clout to attract 4 or 5 top young players in the right positions. Thats 4 to 5 to slot straight in to the rotation to improve us, with two or three slipping down the pecking order and four or five moved on, without diminishing what is a very well balanced, tight knit and capable group already. Which Rafa will be careful to protect.

My greatest concern at the minute is the quite inexplicable absence of Peter Beardsley from the banner. I’m assuming this is simply a result of Ed having a little senior moment somewhere along the line, and will soon come to his senses.
