Can Newcastle Beat Blackburn To Create New Record?

Rafa Benitez and the Newcastle team will try to create a new record at Newcastle by being the first team in our long history to win 10 games in a row.

That has never been done before and currently Kevin Keegan holds the record with nine.

Kevin did win 13 league wins in a row spread over two different seasons in 1992, but it was interrupted by a League Cup draw at Mansfield (0-0) in the second leg of that tie on 25th August, 1992.

Kevin won 11 games in a row to start off the 1992-1993 season in the second division (then called Division One) – the first year of the Premier League.

Owen Coyle – Blackburn manager

Newcastle play 3rd bottom Blackburn Rovers at home on Saturday and we have heard comments from manager Owen Coyle and one or two of the players they could shock Newcastle.

Anything is possible in football, but we are hoping the lads can get another 3 points and continue winning through the end of this year.

We are currently 9 points above 3rd placed Reading and we are hoping to increase that points gap between Newcastle and the 3rd placed team by the end of the year  – by as much as possible.

Ha! First vote and it’s for a win. Be disappointed if we don’t beat Blackburn. All for not getting complacent but surely we can fly through this one. Best bet is to win all our games and settle any record once and for all. 🙂 Hoping to witness a goal fest.

@ Ed so why is the record not the 11 straight games in 1992-3?

Am I being stupid here but how can Rafa be the first manager in Newcastle history to win 10 games in a row if King Kev won a 11 in a row 92-93?

The mansfeild cup tie would have been the second or third game of the 92/93 season, so thats what interrupted it it, i would assume

I think for the records Ed’s talking about is all competitions whereas during 92-93 11 straight wins they were only the league, during that run we had one or two draws in the League cup during the same time frame as the 11 wins

Like I said, let’s win every game until at least Christmas, so any argument about records is sorted out. If a winning streak was interrupted by a draw, then how does it matter? A draw isn’t a win in my book. Smash the record to settle any further discussion. 🙂

We actually never lost a cuptie in that run but we drew against Mansfield in the LC and Grimsby in the FA cup.
It was actually Grimsby who ended our run of League wins – at SJP!!!!

I just can’t see us losing to Blackburn myself. Not for one second saying it can’t happen, I just can’t imagine how they could better us. Rafa won’t allow Complacency and our team is far superior player for player. Something would have to go badly wrong to lose on Saturday.
