Matz Sels joined us from Gent at the end of June and he was our first signing of the summer for about £4M.
He was a surprise signing and was brought in by Rafa Benitez because both Tim Krul and Rob Elliot would take some time to get back to action from their serious ACL injuries.
Rafa wanted to make sure he had two experienced goalkeepers available and did not have to rely on the untested Freddie Woodman.
So at the start of the season Newcastle had Matz Sels and Karl Darlow and Matz got the starting position for the first 9 league games of the season.

But Matz cannot be too happy he’s been on the bench since the game at Villa Park on September 24th and with Rob Elliot fit again, there is immense competition for the goalkeeper jersey at Newcastle.
There was news yesterday coming out of Belgium that his former club Gent are looking for a goalkeeper and Matz Sels could be a target.
We suppose there could be an opportunity for Sels to go back to Gent on loan for the rest of the season, but if that did happen then the loan contract would need to have a clause in it to say he would be recalled if ether Karl Darlow or Rob Elliot were injured.
We expect young Freddie Woodman to go out on loan in January to further his development and he needs first team games to do that.
It’s not looking too good for Sels at Newcastle at the moment, but as we’ve seen in the past, things can change very quickly in football.
Tim Krul was given a year’s extension to his contract at Newcastle last summer to June, 2018.
The Dutch International was sent on loan to Ajax as he recovers from the serious knee injury he picked up over a year ago playing for the Netherlands and he’s now played three games but hasn’t yet played for the Ajax first team.
Tim will return in pre-season and Rafa will then have Krul, Sels, Elliot, Darlow and Woodman and one goalkeeper will probably be sold at that time.
What do you think?
