Shocking 1-0 Defeat For Newcastle

In what was a shocking defeat for Newcastle today we lost 1-0 to Blackburn Rovers with a goal from Mulgrew after 75 minutes and that our fourth defeat of the season in the league which equals what we lost in the full 46 game season the last time we were in the Championship back in 2009-2010.

It also puts an end to the 9 game winning streak.

With Brighton winning 2-1 at home to Fulham and Reading winning 2-1 at home to Bristol City, Brighton are now just 2 points behind and Reading 6 points behind in 3rd place.

But it was always going to be a game we were expected to win that we would lose.

And 90% of the fans thought we would win this game in our poll – so it really is a huge shock.

It was also out third home defeat of the season and the first time we haven’t scored since we were last beaten – at home by Wolves (2-0) on 17th September.

And Blackburn played well for their win after Rafa had made a full six changes to the side from last Saturday’s game at Leeds – with no doubt an eye on the League Cup quarter-final at Hull City on Tuesday night.

The first half was scrappy and un the game Blackburn had to thank their goalkeeper Jason Steele for two crucial saves in this game from Shelvey and Clark.

And 10 minutes into the second half Gamez was stretchered off with what looked like a serious injury and on came Paul Dummett.

The winning goal came with 15 minutes to play following a left wing corner when Mulgrew fired home on the volley at the far post.

That shocked Newcastle and Gayle was introduced for Mbemba after 85 minutes, but we couldn’t pull one back.

This will level set everybody that this season is not going to be a walk in the park and now we have to do well on Tuesday night – but we cannot take it for granted that we will finish in the top two either – the league is most definitely the first priority this season.

This defeat is certainly a shock to the system, but we shouldn’t over-react because in our 9 game winning streak we also carried some luck.

I think Rafas record so far allows him a bit of slack though, eh? He’s the right guy to straighten it out I’m sure.

Worst thing about today is that we no longer pose an insurmountable, morale-sapping obstacle to anyone in the league.

Maybe it’s a case of players feeling to comfortable at home? But tbf it’s not a huge difference as we win most games

At home we are more open to counter attacks i suppose

I would rather us play a full strength team on Tuesday and win hopefully than win today and lose Tuesday

We’ll be up for Tuesday I reckon. We should have been up for today but we were always gonna have one of those days…

If we were to miss automatic promotion by those three points I’m not sure how many would agree. As it stands now, fair claim.

Agree fully with that second paragraph.

I said after the Wolves league game that I would happily take a defeat every 6 games .

It has worked out 50% better than that.

Rafa has the players at such a pitch he won’t even have to rant at them – they’ll be really hurting.

I also give Gayle MOM. For the shift he put in down the sideline. Constantly running. Chasing everything. (mostly the other unused subs). Done a hell of a lot more that the playing squad. Think rafa shud kept mbemba on and took Perez off. Perez was shit. There was more pressing, flair and desire from mbemba. Sorry but think rafa got this one wrong today. 3 changes maybe but not 6. Especially when 2nd and 3rd are winning games.

So you pick a team of professionals & they fail to deliver.

What do you have to do to motivate these footballers ?

Paying them obscene amounts of money is not enough

No wonder football managers get stressed…………..

    No need to panic anyone!
We have 1 point better than last time we were in championship after 18 games and another stat that people keep worrying about is that we have lost 4 games already, same as the whole season last time but you have to remember we lost 3 by 18 games the last time and then only lost ONCE in 28 games after that in the league. If hoots can get us doing that then I fully believe rafa can.

I think its pretty clear from his lineup choices that Rafa was resting players to focus on the Hull match on Tuesday.

Not the end of the world to drop three points given the cushion we have…..as long as we do, in fact, win Tuesday’s match.

No point comparing this season with last promotion. As long as we go back into PL next season, it doesn’t really matter. We are allowed to have off days, it’s a 46 game season, plus cup games.
