Two English players Newcastle have been linked with recently are 23 year-old Leeds United left back Charlie Taylor and 24 year-old Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson and it could be they are two top targets for Newcastle this coming summer.
Gone are the days when Newcastle looked for cheap buys in France – with less than half of those acquisitions paying off – and it seems Rafa wants a sizable English or British core of players at the club.
Certainly new players like Ciaran Clark, Matt Ritchie, Isaac Hayden and Dwight Gayle fit that profile and have been outstanding for Newcastle so far this season.
23 year-old Charlie Taylor – free agent this summer
There are a number of our players whose contracts run out next summer, but it could be that Rafa waits until the summer before he makes any real decisions on who he is going to keep and who he will allow to leave of his current squad of players.
He will obviously need to improve the squad in terms of quality and Taylor and Wilson would be good signings for us.
Charlie Taylor’s main position is at left-back but he can also play as a left-winger and the lad is highly rated and has so far made 91 appearances and scored 3 goals with 10 assists for Leeds United.
He made his debut at the age of 17 back in August, 2011 as a substitute against local rivals Bradford City and he played extremely well against us at Elland Road last weekend – he looked a class player.
Leeds wanted £7M for him last summer but his contract at Leeds runs out next summer, so if it’s not renewed he will become a free agent at that time.
Callum Wilson – 24 year-old Bournemouth striker
24 year-old Callum Wilson started his career for a couple of seasons at his home town club Coventry, and in that time he scored 23 goals in 55 games for them before signing on at Bournemouth in July, 2014 for around £3M.
Callum was out for most of last season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in September of last year – and he didn’t return to action until late April.
In Bournemouth’s promotion season of 2014-2015 he scored 23 goals in 50 appearances for the south coast club.
Callum’s now played 24 Premier League games in total and scored 8 goals so it looks like he can be a good player in England’s top league, if Rafa does manage to get him to Newcastle.
However, he could cost quite a bit, especially if he keeps scoring goals in the Premier League this season.
So we’d be happy enough to get these two Englishmen into the club next summer.
Maybe with another two top players also coming in?
We’re sure that Rafa Benitez will be given big money to spend next summer if we are promoted back to the Premier League.
