It was a difficult game to watch tonight when Newcastle were beaten by a 10 man Hull side when they scored all their 3 penalties in the shoot our and we missed three of the four penalties we took.
Rafa did say after the game that his players had not practiced penalties in preparation for this game (why not?), but he concentrated only on the positives in his post-match comments.
But it was a gut wrenching loss to take when we were so near to making a semi-final.
And we were up against only 10 men in extra time after Dieumerci Mbokani was shown a red card on 89 minutes.
Newcastle players congratulate Mo Diame after his goal
We should really have won this game in extra time and scored early through Mo Diame, but then we let in a sloppy equalizer just over a minute later.
Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle and Yoan Gouffran all missed their penalties and only on-loan winger Christian Atsu scored – sign him up!
This is what Rafa said after the game:
“Is it a missed opportunity? Yes, I think so,” “We are disappointed because we played so well. We are out of the competition, but I think we deserved to qualify.”
“The way that we played, I think we deserved to score goals in the first half and deserved to score goals in extra-time. But when we scored the goal, we didn’t manage the situation properly.”
“That is something you can get with experience, and hopefully a match like this will give us that experience and in the future we will do a bit better when we have this kind of advantage. We created so many chances.”
“We can learn a lot for the future from a game like this,” “We played against a Premier League team, away from home, and the team was playing so well.”
“I was pleased at the end of normal time, but I was saying, ‘we have done nothing – we have to score and we have to win’.”
“With one less player for them, we had so much control(in extra-time that it was just a matter of time before we scored.”
“But once we did that, we made a mistake and we allowed them to score.”
“There were a lot of things we can learn, but also a lot of positives because, for me, the team did quite well.”
At least to us this was another gut-wrenching defeat – two defeats in four days – maybe we’ll feel better in the morning.
