Rafa Benitez is nothing if not brutally honest and he refuses to make any excuses when Newcastle lose and brushes off excuses if they are brought up in his post-match interviews.
It is all down to how his team played and if we don’t win, that’s because there is something the team didn’t do or did do that caused us not to win.
When Rafa first arrived he was told that Steve McClaren had made lots of mistakes as the Newcastle manager, but he interrupted and said all managers make mistakes.
Rafa Benitez – it was a bad performance starting with me
He said he makes mistakes, but wanted to keep them few and far between.
Newcastle shocked us all on Saturday in what we expected would be an easy game against 3rd bottom Blackburn Rovers at home.
But we lost 1-0 at home and it was hard to take for the fans, especially when 90% thought we would win this game in our poll before the game.
We were also one win away from the first ever 10 game winning streak in Newcastle’s long history, so the defeat was like a huge kick in the gut.
Rafa has talked about the game on Saturday and he said it was a bad performance from the team – including him.
This is what he has said in the Chronicle today:
“It wasn’t a nice night for me.” “Before we had spent time deciding everything, having meetings and watching every single detail.”
“The fact Jesus Gamez played after not playing much was the only risk.” “Afterwards he was the best player.”
“But we have to accept it was a bad performance from everyone – starting with me.” “Now what we will do is correct everything as soon as possible.”
“We must be sure it will be a positive lesson for the next games.” “I was so disappointed after the defeat that I can’t see any positive in any way.”
“It’s finished, we just concentrate on the future and the future is the Hull game.” “We have been given an opportunity three days after to change things.”
“I think we have to carry on with the same way of doing things with the same ideas.”
“We must analyse the mistakes we made and try not to repeat them in the next game.”
“The only positive is that you can learn something.”
That’s another reason the Geordie fans love this man – he’s big enough to admit his mistakes when he makes them and he makes no excuses.
And when we suffer a bad defeat he seems to suffer as much as the fans.
This man is perfect for Newcastle.
Now we need to win this game tonight when close to 2,500 Geordie fans will be in attendance.
