7 Changes – Sels, Lazaar, Diame, Gouffran And Gayle All Start

Hull City Crest 2014.svgnufc-emblem

Rafa has just named his side for the EFL Cup quarter-final game at the KCOM Stadium tonight against Hull City and both Matz Sels and Achraf Lazzar are in the starting line-up – as well as Dwight Gayle.

Here is the team that Rafa will start tonight as just released on the Newcastle United Twitter account.

So there’s a surprise there with Achraf Lazaar getting a start tonight at left-back as well as goalkeeper Matz Sels in the side.

It looks like that’s seven changes from Saturday’s starting line-up and Ciaran Clark is the only defender starting tonight who started on Saturday!

And Cheick Tiote and Daryl Murphy are on the bench.

Here’s the manager talking about the game tonight:

“At this stage of the competition, there were a lot of Premier League sides so it was always likely to be a difficult tie.”

“We have confidence, because we are doing well, but we have a lot of respect for Hull because they are a Premier League team and we will play away from home.”

“So we will approach the game with hope that we can do well – but also knowing that it will be a hard game against a side from a higher league.”

Three quarters of our fans in the poll expect us to win this game tonight.

really excited to see lazaar, needs to get defensive priorities right first though then think about venturing forward.

this nonsense about Lazaar being a poor defender is just that– and speculation. the kid’s had like two appearances for the team and only one has been semi-televised

i’ve no idea what to expect from him. I sure hope he’s in the Santon mold but more comfortable getting forward (hell, if he can use his lesser-dominant foot that’d be a step up from dummet, yedlin and sonton)

tonight will be the first time any of us really get a true glimpse of him unless some have been to the matches he’s played

Seems Colback has not recovered, are well, the Dummett haters have got their wish with regards to Lazaar starting. Hope it goes well.
Would have felt a bit more optimistic if they had both started. Fingers crossed.

9/11, now about par for the course for me 🙂 Got Lazaar right but missed on Anita and got the tip about Colback too late. Not to worry, as long as we win tonight I couldn’t give one. Howay the lads!

Dw mate I’m not assuming he’s a poor defender yet as only seen him twice, just he’s meant to be the new guy who’s going to offer what Dummett is limited at, going forward, but what Rafa will look for is defensive responsibilities first then attacking after.

I agree with carmon@4, why gamble away 3 crucial league points on Saturday to reach the semis and then put Sels in goal? Is Rafa, like Ashley, addicted to risk taking? Not a game for faint hearted. Also Hull will surely have Diame’s number, very surprised how see him starting. Gayle must steps up again a couple of times, as I don’t think we’ll keep a clean sheet.

hull have greg olley on the bench who was in our youth academy.

    Spotlight kid 21

I would do the same, you should rotate goalkeepers in cup games, plus sels has had a few weeks now to try and regain some confidence and work on crosses and set pieces more. Rafa has put his faith in him its now up to sels to repay that.

    Just search Sels on Twitter.

The negativity from our fans surrounding him is a) totally unwarranted and b) in no way helpful.

Very strange how these sorts of opinions get expressed then seem to catch like wild fire, get exaggerated, repeated for months and then become the ‘truth’ of the matter.

So far I’d give his NUFC career a 6. Steady for the most part with 1 or 2 decidedly bad games and 1 or 2 definitively good games. Some go on like he’s been making Roy Carroll type howlers week after week.

Diame needs to really up his game we cant afford for him to be a passenger tonight as Hull will be all over him whenever he gets the ball !

Big test for Lazaar tonight as well hes really got to be switched on as we dont want Hull firing crosses in because the 2 boys up front are really good in the air

don’t agree with you on much but totally agree re that post

same deal with lazaar….something caught wind that he was a crap defender although 99% of us haven’t had a real opportunity to adjudge him, but lo and behold the truth of the matter is he’s a crap defender and that’s what he’ll always be

now re sels, he doesn’t strike me with the least bit of confidence, but i have to believe there’s something there if he was so heavily scouted. the hounding by those purportedly supporting him does no favors
