Alan Shearer took to Twitter after the Newcastle loss to Hull last night when we beaten 3-1 on penalties after dominating large parts of the game.
We missed our chances and conceded a sloppy goal and whenever you do that it’s a recipe for losing the game.
That’s what happened last night
Very poor pens but should have won in the 90 minutes. #HULNEW #EFLCup https://t.co/7CPxxHtRfd

Comment #2Gouffran in the number 10 role wouldn’t be a bad shout – as others proposed a few threads back.
I would actually be interested to see Ritchie playing behind Mitrovic. If Mitrovic can hold the ball up, with Ritchie running onto the knock downs, Ritchie could let loose with that venomous left foot of his.

Comment #3Ha ha, I see the Alan Pardew fan club rounded on me last night like a pair of Directioners, Mixers or Beliebers. We’ve had a couple of disappointing results and now the managers faults have been laid bare. Science was against him and the pitch was too cold, it didn’t help that the away fans were urging us to attack either when they got their equaliser. A team selection on Friday night designed to show the squad that there wasn’t certain teams for cups and league which backfired. Unless we went unbeaten all season the Pardito’s were hoing to rub my unwavering support for the manager in my face.
Mag52,
No, it wasn’t the goatee beard it was the thirteen major honours, his infectious pride in the City and fans and the way he says “We are Newcastle United”. What is it with you and Pardew, it can’t be that Johntsons paint trophy so it must be either that silver hair and silly glasses or his blond hair and micro shorts, maybe you’ve got a poster of both.

I have never met such a hyperbolic bunch of idiots as Newcastle fans.
We played well last night and were unlucky not to win in the 90 or the 120.
We had a concentration blip allowing them back in.
Suddenly everyone is acting as though it is the end of the world.
Im as disappointed as the next man but Hull defender in their own box. It allowed us to attack freely but we struggled to find players in free goalscoring positions at times.
This wasnt by chance. Phelan knew what he was doing there and his defenders did their job well.
Couldve been a different game if we had Mitro or Murphy on sooner when we had to resort to aerial balls but equally, nothing to say Gayle wouldnt find himself a bit of space.
As for what this means for promotion? NOTHING
So what Hull are staring down relegation. We still have a better squad on paper and there are many that will develop a lot from the rest of this season ready for the Prem should we go up.
Atsu, Yedlin, Anita (in his new role), Lascelles, Darlow, Hayden, Mitro are all developing well in this league and with other premier league quality players like Ritchie and Shelvey around them, we should have developed into a nice unit by the summer. With a few additions in the summer we will be fine. Not to mention that Gayle is getting some much needed game time.
Any team that gets promoted and stays up is doing well.
If we get promoted and finish 13th-17th. That’d be a good season given where we have come from. I get the feeling the fans are going to want us to get promoted and then expect a top half finish or its a failure. Newcastle needs to stop being judged against Keegan and Robson’s era and start being judged on the last decade.

It’s almost as if mag 52 takes delight when we very occasionally lose under Rafa, as he thinks it makes us see his hero in a better light.

Actually I think most of the posters are saying we dominated the game and see the good side in that.
It’s more the fact we lost a game we clearly should have won that’s p1ssing us off.
Disappointed yes, frustrated yes, downhearted no.
We’ll still storm the league and are still looking forward to it.

Comment #7Ritchie is a winger for sure.
He has the instincts whereas a lot of wingers are only players are played as wingers because they have pace. It would make no sense to move him into the hole.
I do think that that is one area we can improve on though as Perez just doesn’t have the link up play and Diame can be hit and miss.
Gouffran is probably a decent shout to try there as he played as a support striker a fair bit in his career but he’s our best option on Left Wing.
Despite the result, I thought Mitro showed some good things against Blackburn. His link up play is coming along well. He’s getting into better positions and he is spotting his team mates a lot better.
I dont get the criticism for him. We certainly cannot rely on him 100% but he scored a decent number of goals in a terrible team fighting relegation that did not play to his strengths, in a new league at 21 years old (looks are deceiving, he is still a young lad).
I have all faith that Mitro can develop into a find player and for all those that think pace is the be all end all for strikers, you might want to look at Costa, Defoe, Ibrahimovic and Austin who area all currently in the top 10 goalscorers in the Prem. That Kane fella isnt bad either and he’s not got any pace.
This season Mitro is on a goal every 143 mins in the league. That’s more than once every 2 games (only 4 starts, He’s 2 in 2 in the cups.
It wont happen but in light of our often ineffective number 10s, maybe we should look at a Gayle, Mitro partnership.
Mitro brings hold up, presence and height and Gayle brings pace. He’s more than capable of getting into the box for goalscoring opportunities and it’s not like our current number 10s are creating chances either. They mainly come from Wingers and Shelvey.

Comment #9I think it’s looking very much like a more convential looking team against Blackburn and big changes against Hull would have been the way to go, easy for us to say that in hindsight. It could actually be a blessing in disguise We are still top of the league, have the divisions top scorer and reached our first quarter final for eleven years not to mention equalling our biggest ever away win and league wins in a row. Comment #10I would like to see this team in action (4312):
Atsu – Gayle
Perez / #10
Diame – Shelvey – Hayden
Lazaar – Clarke – Lascelles – Yedlin
Darlow
Full backs providing width and crosses into the box, two mobile forwards to pull opposition defenders about, solid midfield that can cover each other and behind. Just need a #10 for passes in and around the box.

Comment #11Yedlin on the RW, Ritchie playing in behind Mitrovic, could in theory, be more effective than Ritchie RW, with Perez/Diame behind Mitrovic. I base that on Perez/Diame being ineffective behind Mitrovic.
Ritchie can score from outside the box when he is central. I do agree though that Ritchie is a natural winger… but something needs to be done about the number 10 role, because it’s currently an inefficient use of players.
I only propose it as an experimental idea, based solely on Mitrovic playing.

Quite the contrary.
I’ve supported NUFC for a good many years more than you have I suspect, and wish for nothing more than a successful team to follow after all this time.
I have a huge admiration for Rafa as a person and a manager, but I don’t think the sun shines out of his @rse as you and Jail clearly do, and if I think he gets things wrong occasionally, I’ll say so.

a man who’s won nowt, playing sh-te anti football v a man whose won everything and plays good passing football.

It’s not just lack of pace with mitro, it’s lack of movement. Defoe for one on that list is always making clever runs non-stop, a la Gayle. Mitro is kind of static.

So what that I think the sun shines out of his arse, after nine dark years he has finally given us a bit of hope that a corner might be turned, we aren’t going to win every game and next season we will probably lose as many as we will win, every time we do lose are you and manxpie going to remind me that the manager is only human afterall while defending Pardews atrocious record.

Comment #28We were missing two things last night.
1) An advanced playmaker.
Shelvey is excellent when countering, switching the play and finding the right ball from deep, particularly when there is lots of movement going on around him (e.g. on the break). However, we need someone further up the field who can take a man on and create things with his feet rather than with a pass. That’s what we need to fill Diame’s position as he and Ayoze just aren’t doing it.
2) A clinical finisher.
Gayle mishit a couple of decent chances and it was clearly not his night (cue: penalty). We need someone who is going to find the back of the net on good days and on bad days – it’ll cost us to get one who is ready to do that immediately, which is why we went for Mitro when we did. We knew that the price for potential is far lower than the price for the finished product, but he still has some growing to do (although I’d like him to get more time). We need someone who is farther along and spending 20m+ is within our financial means and will be the biggest difference between drawing Hull and scraping out 1-0 wins on our off days.
Overall, we need to bounce back against Forest. I have a feeling that a dismantling of them may be on the cards as we now have hungry players to set things right after two weak losses.

Comment #29The appointment of Southgate is the definition of cronyism.
There is something very sleazy about the FA’s holier than thou approach, but then again, we know all about their champagne parties, and attempting to get off with their secretaries.
I remember Italia 90, when England was an unmissable team to watch… these days I don’t even bother.
