Newcastle lost their third game in six days tonight to cap off a terrible week.
It was a crazy game at the City Ground with some bizarre refereeing with Newcastle going down to 9 men by half time with Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Dummett getting their marching orders after giving away penalties.
And Karl Darlow had saved both penalties.
Nicklas Bendtner equalizes after 52 minutes
It was in the 33rd minute when Lansbury and Shelvey clashed in the penalty area and it seemed that Jonjo aimed a kick at the Forest player.
The referee’s assistant informed the referee and Shelvey was sent off and Nottingham were awarded a penalty.
That’s Shelvey’s old self showing through unfortunately – indiscipline – Rafa will hardly be pleased at that although Lansbury was rolling around and made the most of it.
That’s a three match ban for Shelvey – it doesn’t rain but it pours.
Darlow saved the penalty down to his left from Bendtner and then Ciaran Clark seemed to score a perfectly good goal with a header but referee Martin called him up for a foul.
There was not foul to be seen in the TV replays – what’s the referee doing?
And then Matt Ritchie rammed the ball home with his left foot just before the break. .
But then Lansbury (yes him again) went down in the penalty area after a challenge by Paul Dummett and the same thing – he pointed to the spot and sent Dummett off – unbelievable.
It was a challenge Paul didn’t have to make and of course the slightest contact and down went Lansbury.
Another three match ban for Dummett.
Karl Darlow again saved the penalty from Lansbury and saved the follow up shot too and so Newcastle were leading 10 at the break but we had only 9 men.
They had Karl Darlow – surely Newcastle’s new number one to thank for making three great saves in that first half.
The lads then put in a terrific display in the second half but obviously it’s very difficult with just 9 men on the pitch, but they played their hearts out in that second half.
Bendtner equalized after 52 minutes and then near the end we conceded via an own goal from Jamaal Lascelles after 86 minutes and lost 2-1 – that’s pour fifth league loss of the season.
But at the end of the day we have dropped 6 points in two league games and results wise it’s been an awful week for the club.
And it’s worse than that because now Shelvey and Dummett are banned for three games each so this game is a big hit for Newcastle and the refereeing was dubious at best.
A win tomorrow by Brighton at Cardiff City will take them one point above us in the league table.
We have to regroup for our next game – but that’s now 8 days away when we are at home to Birmingham – we cannot lose that one too!
