The reporting in the local press has been that Rafa Benitez will have some significant money to spend in the January transfer window and he can spend it as long as good players are available to bring into the squad.
They will be players who can both help us gain promotion this season, which still has to be the overwhelming target for Newcastle.
The players will also need to be good enough to be able to perform in the Premier League.
It could also be that as part of his negotiations in May to stay on at Newcastle, specific transfer amounts – probably minimums – were written into his contract for maybe the first three transfer windows.
Rafa Benitez – Newcastle manager
And with Rafa basically making a net profit of £30M in the summer, with the excellent assistance of Managing Director Lee Charnley, there should therefore be significant money to spend next month.
All that has been backed up today by former striker Mick Quinn speaking on talkSPORT, who has said he thinks Rafa has “a few quid to spend” on players in January.
This is what Mick Quinn told talkSPORT:
“I’ve heard he Benitez has a few quid to spend in January,” “I’ve seen enough Championship teams now to think that it is a moderate division.”
“I really do.” “Even when Newcastle went down to nine men, they still had 58% of the possession.”
It’s interesting because we have plenty of money right now – and our day-to-day running costs should not be a problem, unlike the last time we were in the Championship when Mike Ashley loaned the club close to £30M.
We are helped by the huge crowds at St. James’ Park and the wages of the squad were also dramatically cut in the summer.
Highly paid players were either sent out on loan (Tim Krul, Siem de Jong, Henri Saivet, Emmanuel Riviere) or moved out of the club either via transfer (Moussa Sissoko, Gini Wijnaldum, Daryl Janmaat, Andros Townsend, Papiss Cisse) or their contracts were not renewed (Fabricio Coloccini, Gabby Obertan, Sylvain Marveaux, Steven Taylor).
The summer transfer window for Newcastle was one of the best in many years and it was the first one for Rafa at the club.
There maybe a connection there.
🙂

Comment #161Yeah that has been mentioned by a few since the decision, and I can see the thought processes leading to that. Me, I’m just grateful the FA have gone out on a limb more than I expected already. They could have easily took the safer option and closed ranks..

Comment #163The cards getting chalked off isn’t going to change my attitude to Lansbury come December 30th.
What irked me even more was Lansbury on camera straight after the game talking about the Shelvey incident and saying ‘..there’s no room for that (Shelvey’s behaviour) on a football pitch..’
No room for his cheating, more like!

Moderate division? -I don’t think so
NUFC squad to good for it, on balance? – I would say so.

I read that some ex Forest player under Clough said that Lansbury wasn’t play acting at all and that Shelvey clearly ‘stamped’ on him, I fear the guy must have the same drink problem as his ex boss.

I don’t think the young man with the ladies hair style is going to have witnessed anything like what he’s going to face on the 30th of December if he’s daft enough not to feign injury.

Comment #169Genuine BBC report today that : Referees will be able to use a pitch-side monitor for the first time to review decisions when the Club World Cup begins in Japan on Thursday.
Video assistant referees will review “match-changing” situations before informing the on-field official.
The referee will then be able to view footage for some decisions – something not permitted in previous trials.
Fifa’s chief of technical development Marco van Basten said the move “represents a big step forward”.
However it is thought that based on recent experiences that some referees might disagree and that one unattributed comment stated ” this represents a big step backwards” and “would expose us referees to all sorts of ridicule” .
Perhaps someone in the media could ask any referee in the limelight for his or her opinion ?

Comment #171Video technology has existed in sports for about… 40 years! In sports where it has been introduced it takes no more than a few seconds to decide and there’s a limited amount of challenges permitted. The ref himself can request to review something and he remains the final decision maker as he too reviews the video evidence.
What if the evidence is inconclusive? The original call stands.
If we get with the times our last game won’t happen. But we won’t have anything to talk about, you and Andy Gray may say. Don’t be daft. There’s plenty.

Kenny Burns.
And he says there was no playacting from the Forest man – and that Shelvey blatantly stamped on him.
“Shelvey stamped on him and when you do that you deserve to be sent off,” he said.
“It was a blatant stamp, I saw it from the stands. He had to go.”
