Two very good defenders Newcastle have been linked with over the last few months are 19 year-old Partisan Belgrade center-back Nikola Milenkovic and 23 year-old Leeds United left back Charlie Taylor.
Newcastle were interested in Taylor back in the summer, but would not meet the asking price of £7M for the defender and neither would Liverpool, who were also interested in the player.
Newcastle have been linked with Milenkovic only over the last few months, but two weeks ago there was news coming out of Italy that Italian giants Juventus are also interested in signing the massive 6ft 5ins once capped Serbian International.
Charlie Taylor – Leeds United left-back
Rafa Benitez seems to have plenty of money available to spend both in January and this summer – if we are promoted by then – so the Spanish manager will try to bring in some players in January and then some in the summer.
Charlie Taylor and Nikola Milenkovic would seem to be great buys for Newcastle.
It’s usually difficult to get good players to the club in January, but in Taylor’s case his contract at Leeds runs out in the summer and so he could be available at a reduced price next month, although other club – like Liverpool – are also interested in the 23 year-old.
He could also be a free agent in the summer.
Charlie’s main position is at left-back but he can also play on the wing and he looked class against Newcastle last month.
He is highly rated and has made 94 appearances and scored 3 goals with 10 assists for Leeds United since making his debut at age 17 back in August, 2011.
Taylor made 43 appearances for Leeds last season when he was the Leeds Player of the Season.
Liverpool could be back in for him next month, after having a £3M bid turned down for him in the summer.
The York-born player is 6ft 1ins tall and has had various loan spells at Bradford City, York City, Inverness CT and League Two side Fleetwood Town.
Nikola Milenkovic has come through to the first team at Partizan this year and would provide height at the back for Newcastle – and he’s also a skillful player with his feet.
He made his debut for Partizan in April of this year against Mladost Lucani and has one full cap for Serbia, when he played in the 3-0 defeat to Qatar in a September friendly.
He has now played 35 times for Partizan with two goals and is getting regular playing time in the Partizan first team.
Rafa will be aiming high when he does decide which players to bring in to strengthen the Newcastle squad and these two defenders would seem to be excellent acquisitions for us.
