Brighton Go Top After Beating 10 Man Leeds With Two Penalties

Brighton won this game after playing against 10 men for three quarters of the game after Phillips was sent off after 23 minutes.

In what was a little bit reminiscent of last week’s game at Nottingham Forest when Newcastle were the visitors.

This time the visitors Leeds United had a player sent off and a penalty awarded to the home side after Phillips handled the ball on the line after 23 minutes.

Glenn Murray scores easily from the spot after 23 minutes

It was definitely a hand-ball from a corner, as the player moved his arm towards the ball to stop it going over the line.

And it was a bit weird with last week’s referee Stephen Martin the fourth official tonight.

But isn’t a penalty enough for such an offense – also sending the player off seems like double punishment – it’s like handing the game to Brighton.

Glenn Murray scored easily from the spot for his 11th goal of the season – all at home.

The score was 1-0 at half time.

And it wasn’t until the 83rd minute that Brighton’s pressure paid off and they got that all important second goal with – you guessed it – another penalty.

Bartley was penalized for bringing down Dunk from a free-kick and Hemed made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-0.

That’s 14 games unbeaten in the league for Brighton with 10 of them wins and yet another clean sheet – that’s 34 points from a possible 42.

In Newcastle’s last 14 league games we have 10 wins, three defeats and one draw – 31 points.

28,406 were at the game tonight.

Here’s what the league looks like at the top after tonight’s game and it’s important we pick up 3 points against Birmingham tomorrow afternoon..

The public transport vehicle moves relentlessly onward again leaving comments stranded in the past.

Leeds did ok with ten men at least they kept the score down so we still have a better GD.

What on earth were the FA doing appointing Steve Martin to any game, yet alone as Fourth Official to this one.

That apart well done to Hoots and co who are getting on with the job, we need to do the same tomorrow.

this makes tomorrows game another must win game IMO,
Ok we are only half way through the season but losing our last 3 is bad enough but losing another at home tomorrow may see their confidence start to wilt a little , so a good win , get back on top for xmas will be a big boost for everyone.

Given his terrible performance, how on earth could Stephen Martin be trusted to be anywhere near any game let alone be the fourth official at a crucial match?

?Newcastle have always needed to at least strive for a manager of Benitez’ quality, and similarly top players, backroom staff and infrastructure. That we haven’t has been a major cause of our 50 barren years.

The weight of expectation on players particularly at home became palpable, and we’ll have had more often than not two or three or more “shitting it” before the game so dragging the chain out there.

The Birmingham game is a big one, coming off three consecutive defeats. We have a fine group at this level, but I don’t suppose it’s entirely impervious to pressure, and there’s little pressure greater than pulling on the black and white jersey to play in front of an anxious St James’ Park crowd.??

Some lull the night before a game this like.

    Is it international week again.

I know what it’ll be – these new posters are the shy type and need a bit of encouragement.

It’s OK, jizz is beered up, sat off in a corner somewhere stinking of piss, dribbling down his red n white top.

Big gobs fell off his 2 step and knocked himself out trying to reach that stash of spare screens on top of his wardrobe and the other spunktrumpet isn’t worth listening too anyway so it’s OK, you can come out now.

    Echo….

Tomorrow’s home crowd could help by raising their voices instead of sitting in silence when the lads are on the back foot and need the crowd’s vocal support.

Back in the day, our home crowd used to scare the life out of any opposition but nowadays….. what sort of fans sit looking at their freeking phones? Have we got a prawn sandwich brigade at games these days?

Maybe Rafa needs to have a word in someone’s ear and get the announcers to think about simulating or stimulating the fans.

The flag boys tried but it seems that some of the flags were nicked and have probably disappeared and live on some kid’s bedroom wall.

I think it’s quiet because some of our fellow posters were embroiled in a real slagging match the other night.

They’ve probably woken next day with an ‘Oh jeez, did a really make a twit of mesell last neet’ head on.

Have come around on Gayle after initial reservations about his suitability to lead the line. E’s great with Shelvey playing him in, although still view Mitro as a more than viable alternative.

Diame for Perez if he is still unwell.

Clark, Dummett and Colback are all natural left sided players which I think gives all three the nod in the big games.

Leah . It could be a long time before that kind of noise returns to SJP . Even opposition players used to fear the noise coming from the terraces at one time , but yeah it’s still gone a bit quiet even though we have a great manager and a good side . Is it an age thing ?? could it be down to a difference in culture now at games ?? The new generation of fans might look at games differently now than in the 70s or 90s . I really don’t know but I think even with the manager we have and no matter how good a side we put out , those times may never return !!!

On the noise of the crowd, we have just suffered almost eight years of pointless mind numbing dross with the numbers made up from Chinese students, day trippers and stag do’s. We have had the singing stifled out of us by Mike Ashleys worry over us singing songs about his weight and legitimacy, this will take awhile to recover but we will get there eventually as long as Rafa hangs about.

I came on the other night ( Aus time )
It had just been real eased the two lads had dodged bans over the red cards etc
It seemed to pass by due to a lot of slagging / counter slagging , pretty much unnoticed
    I left sharpish
Last few days I have scrolled down through streams seeing them puntiated with smiley emojis ( 3 or 4 to a paragraph ) so have again thought nothing of interest to see again.
Other than that it’s basically the usual comments that if you live overseas (which I believe was one of the reasons this blog came about in the, first place) and haven’t been to a home game in more than three years then basically your opinion on anything relevant counts for next to to nowt .
It was so bad yesterday I even started looking at my tax returns for 2017 as alternative .Living the dream .
I think are plenty others watching the meltdown too…. From a far .
Not long before we are like the mag with only three posters all who sound like they have a gob full of citrus .
Anyway … Football related …. 2.1. Toon Gayle / Lascalles from a corner in 80th minute

We need a win but Birmingham are no mugs ,as deemed by their lofty position and will make it a bit difficult for us.
Once again, pace and trickery will be our friend, ive gone for yedlin at rb but it could just as easily be anita to start, bringing on yedlin to terrorise tired legs in 2nd half.
Im going for 2-0 , assuming we manage to keep 11 on the pitch ……i just hope its a decent ref as there are too many rising stars in this league who want to be noticed so they get into the gravytrain in the prem.
That would be ok if they made a name by doing things correctly.
Stephen Martinn was probably given the 4th official role in the hope he learns something from the sidelines……either that or everybody else is booked out

Study leave for mr Martin ?
That’s all it could be as he could not be trusted cutting up the half time oranges
The NRL here in Aus now have a thing called the bunker ( one central location in Sydney staffed by officials , ex players and referees )
It runs with live feeds from all games .
Anything in doubt is referred to them for a decision and is back yo the on pitch ref inside 30 seconds .
Can’t help thinking it’s how football needs to go.
Tiote goal against man city w oilcloth hav been given .
We would have 3 points from forest and prob an extra 4 on the goal diff.
Lansbury would be now serving his ban for being a bellend .simples

    Thanks for the replies.

I don’t think it’s just over the last few days/weeks though or one specific incident.

It’s been a campaign waged for well over a year by those who’s job it was to bring this quickly turned anti Mike Ashley blog (it’s always been in the middle) down to what they believe as an acceptable level of none comments regarding the slug.
